Monarch High School had a busy week of sports, with multiple teams competing in key regular-season games.
The football team faced off against Chaminade Madonna High School and lost 28-7, falling to 3-3 on the season. The Lions entered the game as the third-ranked team in Florida and the 17th best in the nation, as Keshawn Paschall scored the Knights’ lone touchdown in the game.
Juwan Dawkins led the defense, though with 12 tackles, and two of them coming for a loss. Trayvon Alford and Cahmp Brown each made six tackles while Jayden Joselin had an interception.
Monarch High School will now play Coral Springs High School on Thursday, August 9, at 7 p.m. The Colts are winless through their first games this season and lost 52-0 against the Knights a year ago.
The girls’ volleyball team played its first match in 12 days, but lost to Fort Lauderdale High School in three sets. They are 5-5 this year, but previously won four of their first six games after starting the season 0-3. Their wins have come against J.P. Taravella, Coconut Creek, Blanche Ely, South Plantation, and Coral Springs High School. The Knights will play Charles W. Flanagan High School in their final match on Thursday, February 9, at 4:30 p.m.
The cross-country team recently competed in the Bobshaver’s NW Area Schools XC Championship, with Brian Calqugon leading the way, placing 41st overall. Landon Kerlegrand was next to finish, coming in 47th, followed by Adrian Graham and Garidson Jean-Marie.
Ethan Weiss has led the golf team, as the sophomore has taken first place in two matches this season, including one against Westminster Academy, as well as another against South Plantation and Charles W. Flanagan High School, where he shot a season-low 38.
Weiss also shot a 42 and is averaging 44.4 this season, and is set to play individually at the Big-8 Championship, featuring the top players from Borward County. Ty Herbster had his best round come in his opening match against Coral Glades and Pompano Beach High School with a 46. Brody Reavis has shot a 47, while Bradley Doge has played in two matches. The swim team recently swam against Marjory Stoneman Douglas and Northeast High School, and will be holding Senior Night on October 23.
