The spring sports season is underway at Monarch High School, highlighted by two teams earning their first victories of the year while several winter programs continued postseason competition.
The lone softball team competing in Coconut Creek this season, Monarch High School, picked up a memorable walk-off win for its first victory of the year.
After opening the season with an 11–0 loss to Pembroke Pines Charter, the Knights rebounded to defeat Parkridge Christian Academy 6–5. Monarch allowed a run in the first inning but responded with two runs in the bottom half to take an early lead. The teams traded runs in the third and fourth innings before the Panthers moved ahead 4–3 entering the seventh.
The Knights answered in dramatic fashion, scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning for the walk-off win. Jordan Zamor and Janiya McCay each drove in two runs, while Zamor also tossed a complete game to earn the victory. Jade Norwalk contributed at the plate as well. Monarch finished 12–11 last season and will next face Western High School on Monday, February 23, at 3:45 p.m.
The baseball team also recorded its first win of the season, defeating Boyd H. Anderson High School 13–1. After starting the year 0–4 and scoring just three total runs in those games, the Knights broke out offensively against the Cobras. The game ended after five innings due to the mercy rule. Monarch scored three runs in the first inning, one in the second, four in the fourth, and five more in the fifth.
Jacob Weiner and Champ Brown each drove in two runs, while Anthony Potenzano, Brody Reavis, Tyler Perez, and Van Maxwell added RBIs. Nathan Zawloski pitched a complete game, striking out six batters as the Knights also stole 17 bases. Monarch will next play American Heritage High School on Friday, February 20, at 6:30 p.m.
The track and field team competed at the Louie Bing Invitational at Traz Powell Stadium against a strong field. After the preliminary rounds, the Knights qualified in two events. The 4×800 relay team of Tyler Hilton, Anthony Potenzano, Adrian Graham, and Landon Kerlegrand placed 18th overall. Individually, Rickenson Bozier finished 10th in the discus, while Jasmine Jean-Marie placed 23rd after qualifying in the girls discus event.
The water polo team is winless through their first two matches, falling 24-8 against Northeast High School and 13-4 against Cardinal Gibbons High School. Their next game will be against Marjory Stoneman Douglas on Tuesday, February 24, at 5 p.m.
Monarch’s boys soccer team also made a deep postseason run, advancing to the Regional Championship Game before falling to St. Thomas Aquinas High School, which ranked 11th in the state and 19th nationally. The Knights won 12 regular-season games and defeated Boyd H. Anderson High School 3–1 in the opening round of districts before falling to Deerfield Beach High School in the district final. Monarch later avenged that loss by defeating Deerfield Beach in the regional quarterfinals and then advancing to the semifinals with a victory over Miami Beach High School.
The wrestling team also produced strong results at the District Championship. Tyler Metellus, Ronnie Tannariello, Maxwell Gldin, Diddier Carillo Castillo, and Aiden Lorsiton each captured district titles. Jaheim Dawkins and Matthew Tangerine placed third, while Binyamin Simpson finished fourth. The girls team had Rosie Klein place second and willl compete at Regional o Saturday, February 21 while the boys will wrestle on on February 27–28 at South Dade High School.
