Todd Fitz-Gerald Wins National Coach of the Year

Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball Head Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald continues to add to his trophy case after being named National High School Baseball Coaches Association Coach of the Year for the fourth time.

While he has received dozens of awards over his career, Fitz-Gerald says this one is special because his peers recognized him.

“It feels great to be voted on by your peers and be respected in that manner,” Fitz-Gerald said. “It’s definitely an honor, but for me, it’s a team award for my players and coaches.”

Fitz-Gerald helped guide the Eagles to their second straight State Championship. Not only did the Eagles go 30-2 last season, but they also won the National High School Baseball Invitational featuring the top 16 teams in the country as well as a District and Regional Championship.

He also has helped all ten of his seniors sign to play college baseball, including All-American Roman Anthony, who was recently selected in the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox.

Offensively this season, MSD hit .355 with 25 home runs and 245 runs scored. The Eagles also pitched to an ERA of 1.22 and struck out 288 hitters in 206 innings. Despite losing ten seniors, several will return in the fall as Fitz-Gerald looks to become the first coach in Broward County history to win three straight State Championships.
