Two people were killed in a single-vehicle crash Saturday night in Coconut Creek, police said. 

A 2023 Hyundai was traveling west in the 3600 block of Sample Road when it left the road and hit a concrete traffic light pole near the entrance to Tradewinds Park around 10:30 p.m.

The driver, a 30-year-old man from Coral Springs, and the passenger, a 26-year-old woman, also from Coral Springs, both died at the scene, according to Coconut Creek Police. Their names were not immediately made public.

A preliminary investigation indicates speed was a factor in the crash, police said. 

The crash investigation is ongoing.

Coconut Creek is moving forward with bringing curbside recycling to its residents.

During the June 25 meeting, the commission approved an ordinance on first reading to amend the franchise agreement between the city and Republic Services of Florida.

The current Agreement expires on September 30, 2026, but includes one additional five-year renewal, providing for the reinstatement of curbside recycling. This will allow price adjustments due to rising labor and equipment costs and increased solid waste generation, according to city information.

City staff has negotiated the agreement to return curbside recycling with anti-contamination artificial intelligence software and electric, battery-powered curbside collection vehicles, while allowing for increased labor and equipment costs and recognizing the increase in household waste, according to city information.

Coconut Creek homeowners may not see an increase in the millage rate, but they will see increases in their fire assessment and solid waste removal fees.

During the June 25 meeting, City Manager Sheila Rose presented a recommendation to keep the millage rate of 6.8988 unchanged from last year. This will provide funding for the fire station project and other financial commitments, according to Rose.

The taxable value of property in Coconut Creek is $6.8 billion, and the city expects to receive an additional $2.3 million in property taxes next fiscal year, according to Rose.

The fire rescue assessment will increase by about 10 percent, and the average homeowner will see an increase from $333.26 to $366.59, according to Rose. The solid waste assessment will be $493.24, an increase of $166.70 to cover the cost of the new contract.

“We will continue to work on strategies to reduce spending, and that will be presented in phases over the next year or more,” said Rose.

The city will hold a budget workshop on August 13 at 11:00 a.m., focusing on the Fiscal Year 2026-27 budget.

Coconut Creek Police responded to various calls from June 16 to June 22, 2026.  Below is a detailed account of the incidents handled by local law enforcement during this period.

Incidents

Burglary

A burglary was reported at South Florida Jewish Academy, 3700 Coconut Creek Parkway, after a suspect allegedly entered the business and committed grand theft. An arrest was made.

A burglary with battery was reported in the Banyan Pointe neighborhood on June 21. An arrest was made.

Theft

A wallet valued at approximately $2,075 was reported stolen from the South Creek neighborhood.

A delayed theft of a ring valued at approximately $10,000 was reported in Wynmoor Village.

Retail thefts were reported at:

Publix, 6570 N. State Road 7 ($97 in merchandise).

Walmart, 5571 W. Hillsboro Blvd. ($5 in food items; prosecution declined).

Kohl’s, 6950 N. State Road 7 ($340 in merchandise).

A delayed stolen vehicle was reported from the Windsor community after a vehicle was taken overnight and later recovered.

Fraud

A stolen credit card was used at J&N Drive Thru, resulting in a fraudulent $14 purchase.

A resident of Baywood Village II reported being defrauded of approximately $1,100.

Police also assisted a Wynmoor resident who reported being scammed into depositing money into a Bitcoin machine.

Criminal Mischief

A vehicle was spray-painted in the Bayport neighborhood.

Graffiti was found on a boardwalk wall at the Township Recreation Center.

Criminal mischief was also reported at the Banyan Trails clubhouse, on Sunshine Drive and in the Regency Lakes community following a domestic disturbance.

Battery and Domestic Incidents

Domestic battery incidents were reported at the Olivine Apartments, South Creek and Carrington.

A battery was reported at Windsor.

An Orbeez pellet battery was reported in Banyan Trails. The victim declined prosecution.

Juvenile battery was investigated at the Banyan Trails clubhouse.

Verbal domestic disturbances were reported in the Olivine neighborhood and at Planet Fitness.

DUI and Traffic Arrests

A crash at West Atlantic Boulevard and Lyons Road resulted in the driver’s arrest on charges including DUI, DUI with property damage and DUI with injuries.

Additional traffic stops resulted in arrests on felony warrants and narcotics-related charges.

Narcotics

A traffic stop near Lyons Road resulted in DUI and narcotics arrests involving two occupants.

Other Incidents

Three unattended deaths were investigated, including one determined to be suspicious pending further investigation.

Police assisted other agencies on several occasions, including K-9 deployments in Margate and recovering a missing senior.

Animal control responded to an animal complaint in the Buttonwood Hammocks neighborhood.

A trespass warning was issued at 4849 Coconut Creek Parkway.

Lost or stolen property reports were taken from Copans Road, the Promenade and Copolum Circle.

Police investigated an attempted homicide case reported at Monarch Station that also involved narcotics.

John Lawrence Bevilacqua, 46, was arrested on a charge of resisting an officer without violence.

Bradley Owen Hurley, 62, was arrested on a charge of grand theft.

Johnny Damavious Lawrence, 26, was arrested on a charge of domestic battery.

Gene M. Hochman, 44, was arrested on a charge of domestic battery.

Thyrick Anderson McCraywhite, 18, was arrested on a charge of felony retail theft.

Jaqueline Rivero, 46, was arrested on a charge of cocaine possession.

Jesus Manuel Alicea Alvarez, 69, was arrested on a charge of cocaine possession.

Leon Lee Lindo, 33, was arrested on a charge of burglary of an unoccupied structure.

Giancarlo Mercado, 48, was arrested on a charge of burglary with assault or battery.

Dale Lavern Mallory, 65, was arrested on a charge of first-offense DUI.

Coconut Creek Little League enjoyed a memorable summer season, highlighted by its 12U All-Star team advancing to the District Championship Game for the first time since 2018.

The 12U squad put together an impressive postseason run, earning victories over Coral Springs American, North Springs, and Parkland to reach the final. Facing Fort Lauderdale in the championship round, Coconut Creek needed to defeat the eventual champions twice but came up just short to finish as district runner-up.

The team featured Jamie Acosta, Liam Almendarez, Vinicius Gouveia, Vincent Hara, Lucas Leal, Anthony Nicholas, Yvan Orellana, Braulio Pumariega, Roman Rodriguez, Luke Silva, Blake Smith, and Caiden Soto.

The 8U All-Star team also competed against some of the district’s top programs. Coconut Creek opened tournament play against eventual District 10 champion North Springs before facing runner-up Parkland in the elimination bracket. Despite being eliminated after two games, the team gained valuable experience against two of the tournament’s strongest opponents.

The roster included Liam Knockoff, Zayne Russell, Jackson Jorgensen, Leo Muschany, Lucas Arega, Lachlan Beach, Gianni Rubino, Miles Tunink, Michael Hara, Elliot Hara, Chamo Johnson, and Fritz Javel.

The 10U team delivered one of the tournament’s most exciting games, earning a dramatic 14-13 walk-off victory over Deerfield Beach. Team members included Angel Acosta, Braxton Bush, Lucas Thibeault, Mason Bagbey, Anthony Destafano, Braden Lee, Dax Sullivan, Matthew Diaz, Jordan Lemmin, Santino Durand, Kalib Dixon, and Carson Farrell.

The 11U team battled against a difficult schedule, dropping contests to North Springs and Parkland. The roster featured Alexander Schneider, Elijah Cramer, Ignacio Pineda, Colton Cerasani, Rhys Allen, Lennin Gutierrez, Riley O’Neil, Brandon Celli, Sebastian Rogers, Giovanni Simone, Russell Gross, and Michael Mendoza.

{The Promenade at Coconut Creek}

Car enthusiasts will have a chance to admire dozens of classic, exotic, and custom vehicles during the Classic Car Show at The Promenade at Coconut Creek on Saturday, June 27.

The free event will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and feature vehicles from the 1950s and beyond displayed throughout the shopping and entertainment destination.

In addition to the cars, visitors can enjoy live music, specialty coffee from Crema Gourmet, and an evening of shopping, dining, and entertainment at The Promenade. Guests can also catch a movie at Silverspot Cinema while exploring the event.

The Promenade at Coconut Creek is located at 4443 Lyons Road. Admission to the event is free and open to the public.

Dharma and Mama need forever homes. {Broward County Animal Care}

Broward County Animal Care is highlighting two dogs available for adoption: Dharma, a friendly 3-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix, and Mama, a lovable 7-year-old senior dog looking for a second chance.

Dharma, identified as A2473515, weighs 45 pounds and arrived at the shelter May 1 with another dog, Greg, who has since been adopted. Shelter staff describes Dharma as sweet, friendly and eager for attention. She is highly motivated by treats and enjoys meeting new people, including children.

According to Broward County Animal Care, Dharma does well with calm dogs that respect her space. She is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped, allowing her to go home the same day she is adopted. Her adoption fee has been waived, and adopters are only responsible for the $25 Broward County pet registration fee.

Mama, identified as A2017998, is a 60-pound American Staffordshire Terrier mix who arrived at the shelter at the end of April. Shelter officials said she was found abandoned behind a home in a deteriorated wire crate without food or water and was taken into custody for her well-being.

Despite her difficult circumstances, Mama is known for her affectionate personality and friendly demeanor. Staff also note that she keeps her kennel clean. Animal Care officials believe she would thrive as the only pet in an adult-only home where she can receive plenty of attention and companionship.

Before going to her new home, Mama will be spayed, vaccinated against rabies and microchipped. Like Dharma, her adoption fee has been waived, with adopters only paying the $25 pet registration fee.

Both dogs are available for adoption at Broward County Animal Care, 2400 SW 42nd St. in Fort Lauderdale. The shelter is open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

All pets adopted through Broward County Animal Care are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Additional animals available for adoption can be viewed online at PetAdoptions.Broward.org.

A Coconut Creek Police officer stopped an 80-year-old woman from sending money to a scammer after finding her before she was fleeced, according to a police body-camera video.

The video shows Officer Michael Baker speaking calmly with the woman and warning her that she was being defrauded.

“I was supposed to get $70 million and a car,” the woman tells Baker in the video.

“I need you to listen very carefully,” Baker tells her in response. “You’re being scammed, okay? This is not a real thing. Please do not go get money and give it to anybody.”

According to Coconut Creek Police spokesperson Scotty Leamon, scammers had convinced the woman to purchase a money card with scratch-off numbers on it, a common sign of fraud.

“That right there is always a sign of a scam,” Baker tells the woman after she describes scratching off the card and giving someone the numbers.

Baker also explained how scammers often direct victims to stores such as Walgreens to buy gift cards or reloadable money cards, then falsely claim money will be waiting for them at their bank.

“You’re going to get to the bank, and they’re going to say, ‘No, ma’am,’” Baker tells her, urging her not to send more money.

”I won’t do it again,” the woman said.

Leamon praised Baker’s handling of the call, saying the officer was patient, nonjudgmental, and focused on winning the woman’s trust.

Police used the video to warn residents about common fraud schemes involving gift cards, prepaid cards, and money cards. Once a scammer obtains the card information, the money can often be drained immediately, according to police.

“There’s a scammer out there that really hates this video,” Leamon said. “And a conman’s [cursing police] because he didn’t get his money. Well, that’s our love language for the Coconut Creek Police Department.”

Ella Muñoz. {NBP Athletics}

The spring sports season featured success from several teams in Coconut Creek, along with numerous individual accomplishments from standout student-athletes on and off the field

North Broward Prep’s Ella Munoz was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year after excelling both academically and athletically. A multi-sport athlete who competed in soccer and track and field, Munoz graduated with a 4.3 GPA.

During her senior year, Munoz took three International Baccalaureate courses along with several honors classes. She was named to the school’s High Honor Roll and is a member of the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Social Studies Honor Society and Math Honor Society. Willis Gillis, who also shined during the cross country season, was named a Scholar-Athlete finalist.

The Eagles baseball team was well represented on the First Team with Jack Rostock, Julian Rodriguez, Alex Smith and Caden Coleman earning recognition.

Rostock won nine games on the mound and posted a 2.23 ERA. He saved two of his best performances for the postseason, throwing complete-game shutouts in both the regional round and state semifinals. Rodriguez hit seven home runs and drove in a team-high 33 runs. Smith batted .384 with five home runs, 15 extra-base hits and 20 RBIs, while Coleman led the team with nine home runs and also went 6-1 as a pitcher.

Marcus Hall and Adrian Rodriguez were selected to the Second Team. Hall drove in 18 runs, while Rodriguez scored 24 runs during the season.

In boys tennis, eighth-grader Jakob Stein earned Second Team honors. Levi Bekker, Patrick Ronveux, Ben Klein, Caden Nassar and Chady Nassar received Honorable Mention recognition. On the girls side, Elise Pluta, Reina Ozbay, Brooke Feinstein and Samantha Appleton were all Honorable Mentions.

In track and field, Jadin Smith earned Second Team honors in the high jump, while Boston Nguyen received Honorable Mention recognition. Ysamar Pimental was selected to the Third Team in the girls’ high jump. Munoz, Ava Austad, Stella Goldberg, and Noelle Barthelette were also picked from the track and field team.

Coconut Creek High School’s Nia Ennis earned First Team honors in flag football after helping lead the Cougars to a 14-4 record and win a District Title. Ennis finished the season with 51 receptions for 723 yards and 15 touchdowns. Quarterback Mylie Carlson was selected to the Second Team after throwing for 2,152 yards and 41 touchdowns while also rushing for 317 yards and three scores. Indiana Jordan received Honorable Mention recognition after recording seven interceptions and catching three touchdown passes.

Monarch High School’s Chyann McCauley-Bynes was named to the Third Team in flag football following a season that included victories over Deerfield Beach and Plantation. Jada Gopie earned Honorable Mention recognition, while Kennedi Stephenson, Chelsea Dumas, Jania Cooper and Aliyah Duncan were all Honorable Mentions in track and field.

A Coconut Creek man faces attempted murder charges after police say he fired at two teens who allegedly stole marijuana during a drug deal gone bad at Monarch Station Apartments.

According to a Coconut Creek Police Department arrest affidavit, Arnaudson Earle Neil Jean Baptiste, 38, was arrested June 16 on charges of attempted second-degree murder.

Police said the incident unfolded on June 12 at Monarch Station Apartments, 4901 West Sample Road, after multiple 911 callers reported hearing a gunshot and seeing two males running from the area. Officers recovered a spent 9mm shell casing near the front entrance of the complex.

Investigators initially believed the shooting stemmed from a robbery. According to the affidavit, two juveniles later admitted they arranged to meet Jean Baptiste to purchase $100 worth of marijuana but instead planned to steal the drugs. 

Detectives said the pair sent four Cash App transactions that were never completed before grabbing the marijuana and running from Jean Baptiste’s vehicle.

One of the teens told investigators he saw Jean Baptiste reach for a firearm as they ran. Both juveniles reported hearing a gunshot while fleeing and later said Jean Baptiste chased them through the apartment complex, allegedly telling them, “You can’t hide forever; we’re gonna find you.”

Police said surveillance footage and witness statements placed Jean Baptiste at the scene. Detectives also linked him to the phone number used to arrange the meeting and said both juveniles later identified him in photo lineups as the shooter.

During the investigation, detectives recovered a large amount of marijuana from a backpack allegedly carried by one of the juveniles after the theft. 

Jean Baptiste was booked into the Broward County Jail and later released after posting a $75,000 bond.

The city of Coconut Creek has produced stars on the baseball field with a major commitment, along with several players selected to All-Star Games.

Alex Smith, of North Broward Prep, officially committed to Florida State University after a breakthrough junior campaign with the Eagles.

“From the moment I stepped on campus, it felt like home,” Smith said. “I knew it was a place where I could grow and develop both on and off the field. Everyone I met at FSU welcomed me like family, and that made my decision even easier.”

Smith finished the year with five home runs, including a walk-off homer during the postseason. He also drove in 20 runs and collected 10 doubles, helping his school advance to the State Championship Game. The Eagles captured Palm Beach City, District, and Regional Championships before defeating South Sumter High School in the State Semifinals. NBP rallied late against top seed South Walton High School in the final but ended up losing by one run.  

North Broward Prep Juniors Caden Coleman and Anthony Diaz also earned invitations to the East Florida Prospect Games after impressive seasons. At the plate, he hit .337 with nine home runs, 24 RBIs, seven doubles, and two triples.

On the mound, he appeared in 14 games, posting a 6-1 record with a 2.70 ERA.

Coleman also has a signature moment in the District Championship Game, working out of a jam in the seventh inning and then starting the home half of the inning with a double before Diaz delivered the walk-off hit to send the Eagles to Regionals.

Diaz batted .274 this season with three extra-base hits and 17 RBIs. He also scored 11 runs and recorded two-hit performances in both the state semifinal and state championship game.

Jack Rostock competed in the FACA All-Star Game at Stetson University. He capped his senior year off with a pair of complete-game shutouts and was a part of the Eagles team the last two years.

Rostock finished with a record of 16-4 and pitched to an ERA of 2.07 while striking out 140 hitters in 115 innings and recently announced his commitment to the University of Alabama after previously signing with NC State University.

If voters approve the property tax amendment in November and the Homestead Exemption reaches $250,000 in two years, Coconut Creek, Coral Springs, and Margate will receive less ad valorem revenue than their public safety budget.

Representative Christine Hunschofsky made that point during the town hall meeting she hosted at Coconut Creek City Hall on June 16.

She told residents that homesteaded property owners will still have to pay school taxes, which are not included in the exemption. Cities will also have to evaluate the impact during their budgeting process. Local governments may have to raise fees for recreational and other programs. The bill sponsor stated on the House floor that some cities may have to merge with other cities.

Hunschofsky showed how property taxes are broken down by presenting her own tax bill and highlighting the different line items, including city, county, schools, hospital districts, Children’s Services Council, ad valorem and non-ad valorem line items which are on the tax bill.

She acknowledged that many struggling homeowners may welcome a property tax break, but acknowledged business property owners have voiced concerns about a tax shift to non-homesteaded properties. She also said police and fire unions may begin sharing concerns publicly about the amendment. At the end, Hunschofsky said she understood differing views on the amendment and asked everyone to pay attention to their cities’ budgeting processes this year to understand how the amendment will impact their communities.

Commissioner Jackie Railey, who attended the meeting, was concerned about a significant hit to city finances if the amendment is approved. She said the commission will have to take a hard look at the budget.

“We are in good shape, and we are careful with how we spend our money. We may have to make some cuts if the amendment passes,” she said.

If it is not vetoed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, Hunschofsky shared some of the funding she brought to her district  This includes $595,000 for the JAFCO Eagles’ Haven Wellness Center, $500,000 for Every Mother’s Advocate Child Abuse Prevention, $506,300 for the BSO Rapid Response Program, $300,000 for the Broward Homeless Safe Parking Program, and $200,000 for A Vision of Redemption Family Reconnection Program.

Also, she brought $550,000 for the Coconut Creek Northeast Utilities Expansion; $593,000 for the Coconut Creek Public Courtyard Renovations; $500,000 for the Parkland Special Needs Accommodations at Pine Trails Park; $350,000 for the Margate Stormwater Infrastructure Assessment and Rehabilitation; and $85,000 for the Coral Springs SCADA Radio Telemetry System.

Hunschofsky also showed two bills she got signed into law. HB 753 exempts school counselors from taking the education certification exam, which is unrelated to the field. It requires that counselors be evaluated based on indicators of the Florida School Counseling Standards.

HB 1069 expands youth sports background checks by allowing independent sanctioning authorities such as Little League to access the Care Provider Background Screening Clearinghouse for criminal history screening of current and prospective coaches. It requires Level 2 background screening for coaches, according to Hunschofsky.

Residents will not be able to purchase dogs and cats from stores in Coconut Creek.

During the June 11 meeting, the commission approved amending the city’s Code of Ordinances involving the retail sale of dogs and cats to delete the definition of hobby breeder.

Coconut Creek has prohibited pet stores and shops from displaying, selling, trading, delivering, or giving away dogs and cats. According to city information, the goal is to strengthen regulations regarding the retail sale of dogs and cats to address consumer protection concerns and issues associated with the commercial sale of animals.

The ordinance will delete the definition of “hobby breeder” to ensure it clearly governs the retail sales of dogs and cats under county regulations.

City administrators determined that the city code contained a loophole allowing pet stores to sell puppies sourced from hobby breeders, undermining the intent of existing regulations, and that regulating the breeding of dogs and cats is necessary to protect animal welfare and prevent inhumane practices, according to city information.

The sale or transfer of dogs and cats to pet stores and commercial breeders contributes to large-scale resale markets and leads to inhumane operations, according to city information.

Teachers, police officers, firefighters, nurses, and other working professionals in Coconut Creek could soon get a helping hand toward homeownership after city commissioners approved a new purchase assistance program designed to make buying a home more affordable for the local workforce.

At the June 11 meeting, the commission passed an ordinance creating a Workforce Homebuyer Purchase Assistance Program. It will provide funding to help qualified buyers in the workforce target income group purchase homes in the city.

There is a growing need for housing for the workforce target income group with incomes less than 140% of the median family income. Many who would benefit include public service employees who are essential to the local economy and a functioning community, according to city information.

Because affordable housing for individuals and families with moderate income is limited, and the uneven distribution of moderately priced housing has contributed to economic stratification within the community, this program will help people purchase a home, according to city information.

The loan term will be for ten years. If the home is sold or no longer used as a homestead within ten years, the loan must be repaid. If the purchaser remains in the home for ten years, the loan is fully forgiven, and the mortgage is released, according to city information.

“This is a good program because it will help working people buy a home. If they stay in that home for ten years, it becomes a grant,” said Commissioner Jackie Railey.

Coconut Creek will have new voting districts.

During the June 11 meeting, the commission approved an ordinance on first reading to revise the boundaries of city commission voting districts and to accept the 2026 Redistricting Board’s recommendation, according to city information.

The revised districts will apply to candidate qualifications for the March 13, 2029, election.

This means revising the legal boundaries of the five commission districts and establishing four larger voting districts, with a mayor elected at-large. Currently, five commissioners are elected from their districts, and the commission votes for a mayor and vice mayor.

The revised commission voting districts will be effective for candidate qualification for the March 13, 2029, election only, on March 13, 2028, and permanently for swearing in of future commissioner service and elections, on March 22, 2029, according to city information.

Vice Mayor John Brodie praised the board’s work and said its recommendations were good for the city. He said the new districts will allow future commissioners to better represent their residents.

The City of Coconut Creek will honor Juneteenth with an evening of live entertainment, cultural tributes, and community activities during its annual Freedom Day Celebration on Saturday, June 20.

The free event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the City Hall Courtyard, located at 4800 W. Copans Road.

Residents and visitors of all ages are invited to attend as the city commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates African American history, culture, and achievements.

This year’s celebration will feature live music by The Motown Experience, a tribute act that recreates the iconic sounds, harmonies, and choreography of Motown’s greatest artists.

Attendees will also enjoy high-energy step performances by Rise with Greatness, thought-provoking poetry from a spoken word artist, and a lively trivia contest hosted by an emcee, complete with prizes and giveaways.

The first 100 guests will have the opportunity to design and create their own custom Juneteenth T-shirt.

Food and beverage vendors will be on site throughout the evening, offering a variety of refreshments.

Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and coolers to enjoy the outdoor festivities. Pets will not be permitted at the event.

Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

North Broward Prep Holds Signing Day. {NBP Athletics}

North Broward Prep recently held its annual signing day ceremony, with 12 student-athletes officially announcing their college commitments.

The school’s girls volleyball team, which captured the first State Championship in program history, featured four signees. Dasia Johnson committed to the University of Baltimore, Maryland, after leading the Eagles with 326 kills while also recording 40 blocks. Yasmin Dias Tonon signed with Bentley College after finishing second on the team with 320 kills and adding 60 service aces.

Destiny Wiggins will continue her career at Queens College after posting 436 digs in 85 sets this season, while Layni Tobis signed with Queens College as well after contributing 126 kills.

The Eagles finished an outstanding season with a 26-2 record and the program’s first state title.

The boys basketball team also celebrated three college commitments. Francesco Borio signed with Lynn University after leading the team with 15.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, helping North Broward Prep finish 24-4 and advance to the regional round while earning a top-20 state ranking.

Feliz Buroz committed to Westminster College after averaging 14.1 points per game, while Sam Cano signed with Ithaca College following a season in which he averaged 10.3 points per contest.

The baseball program produced three more signees. Jack Rostock originally committed to NC State University but has switched to the University of Alabama. The ace of the Eagles’ pitching staff spent two years on varsity, compiling a 16-4 record with a 2.23 ERA. He delivered one of his best performances in the regional opener and later threw a complete-game shutout in the State Semifinals.

Rodrigo Litherow signed with Covenant College after spending two seasons on varsity and scoring 25 runs. Adrian Rodriguez, a member of two State Championship Teams after debuting as a freshman, will also continue his baseball career at the collegiate level. Rodriguez finished his North Broward Prep career with a .253 batting average, 28 RBIs, five doubles, and one triple.

Rounding out the signing class, track and field standout Jayden Smith committed to Howard University. Smith won a District Championship in the high jump this season before placing fourth at Regionals and fifth at the State Championship

Football standout Peter McLaughlin signed with Allegheny College after recording 96 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and one interception. He finished second on the team in tackles and helped the Eagles earn five victories during the fall season.

Coconut Creek Little League has officially opened registration for its 2026 Fall Ball season, with the program set to begin in August and run through October at Sable Pines Park.

Designed as a developmental and instructional season, Fall Ball is open to boys and girls ages 4-14 and is ideal for both first-time players and those looking to continue building their skills. No evaluations are required.

Registration costs are $95 for T-Ball (ages 4-6) and $195 for Coach Pitch and all higher divisions. Players can sign up for T-Ball, Coach Pitch, Majors, Majors Select, 50/70, and Juniors based on their league age.

Greg Savage has a passion for working on cars.

An electrical engineer who lives in Parkland, he won Best in Show, the highest award, for his restored 1969 Chevrolet Camaro at the Hot Rods and Hot Dogs car show in Coconut Creek on June 13.

“I have worked on this car for three and a half years, and I have put a lot of sweat into this car,” said Savage.

His longtime friend, Vice Mayor John Brodie, said, “Greg is a good engineer and is very meticulous when working on engines.”

He was among 78 entries in the Hot Rods show, according to Eric Fernon, a judge with Cobra Joe Productions, which ran the event. “We had some beautiful cars here,” he said.

Frank Tamarez, of Coral Springs, brought his 1968 Plymouth Road Runner. The Navy veteran said that restoring an older car takes a lot of effort, but he likes doing it.

Restoring cars and attending shows is something Carlo Avolio, of Margate, also enjoys. He brought his 1970 Chevelle and said working on cars is something he loves to do.

Leslie Rosenfeld brought his 1966 Excalibur and said he enjoyed being a part of the show. “It is hard to find parts for this car,” he said.

“We offer breakfast all day, and we offer bowls, salads, and sandwiches. All our food is made on site, and we only use the best and freshest ingredients,” said Efthymiou.

Crema Gourmet is a franchise business with locations in New York and over 20 in South Florida. According to Efthymiou. Popular dishes include chicken and salmon bowls; two eggs any style; ham, turkey, chicken, salmon, and tuna salad sandwiches; and chicken and salmon fillet bowls.

The restaurant offers a casual, comfortable atmosphere where people can come to enjoy breakfast or lunch, along with a variety of coffees and teas.

Efthymiou is a man with a passion for the restaurant business. He was born in Germany, raised in Greece, and has worked in high-end restaurants in New York. He now lives in Boynton Beach.

“I want to offer a good restaurant, a place where people can enjoy a nice meal with their family and friends but not have to pay crazy prices,” he said.

On the first day, family and friend groups were enjoying meals together, while others sat in comfortable chairs, sharing coffee and tea.

The Coconut Creek City Commission unanimously approved a new curbside recycling program during its June 11 meeting, with service scheduled to begin in October 2026.

City officials said the initiative is intended to expand recycling opportunities, reduce landfill waste, and support long-term environmental sustainability.

“This agreement is an investment in Coconut Creek’s future, delivering environmental benefits, long-term value for residents, and expanded education opportunities that will help build a cleaner, greener community for generations to come,” Mayor Jeffrey Wasserman said.

Single-family homeowners currently pay about $326 annually for residential solid waste collection and disposal. Under a new collection contract, those costs are projected to increase to approximately $398.95 per year due to rising labor, fuel, equipment, and disposal expenses, even without recycling services.

The addition of curbside recycling and AI-assisted collection technology is expected to increase residents’ bills by about $7.86 per month.

Increased recycling over the five-year contract could reduce landfill disposal costs, helping to slow future rate increases and potentially lower the long-term cost of the recycling program.

The recycling service will be included in the city’s contract with Republic Services, which provides garbage, bulk waste, and yard waste collection for single-family homes; garbage, bulk waste, and recycling collection for multifamily properties; and garbage collection for commercial customers.

The city plans to launch an education campaign aimed at reducing contamination and encouraging proper recycling practices. AI-equipped collection trucks will monitor recycling streams and collect data intended to improve participation and identify contamination issues.

Republic Services will partner with Coastal Waste Recycling and the city to support public education efforts and promote the program’s sustainability goals.

Officials said the city will monitor the program’s performance and that increased recycling could generate long-term savings by diverting more material from landfills.

Additional information, including educational materials and implementation details, will be provided to residents before the program begins in October.

Residents may notice a significant law enforcement and emergency response presence near Monarch High School in Coconut Creek on Thursday, June 18, as local agencies conduct a large-scale Critical Incident and Response Training exercise.

Scheduled to begin at 7 a.m., the training involves numerous police officers, emergency vehicles, fire rescue units, and a Broward Sheriff’s Office helicopter operating in the area.

According to Scotty Leamon, Public Safety Information Officer, residents, particularly those who live or work near the school, are advised not to be alarmed by the activity, emphasizing that it is part of a planned training exercise designed to prepare first responders for critical incidents.

Given the school’s proximity to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Leamon said that notifying the public in advance is especially important to prevent unnecessary concern.

The exercise is expected to provide realistic emergency response scenarios and will be highly visible throughout the morning.

Abduction Reported: Police investigated an armed home invasion and abduction in the Vista Verde neighborhood shortly after 1 a.m. on June 8. The reported loss totaled approximately $1,655.

Construction Trailer Burglarized: A construction trailer at the Nature Center was burglarized sometime between June 4 and June 6, resulting in an estimated loss of $8,460.

Vehicle Stolen: A vehicle was reported stolen from Coco Parc after disappearing overnight between June 4 and June 5.

Attempted Residential Burglary: An attempted burglary was reported in the Elliott South neighborhood shortly before midnight on June 6.

Aggravated Assault: Police investigated an aggravated assault and criminal mischief incident in the Carrington community on the morning of June 7.

Battery on Elderly Victim: An elderly battery was reported in Wynmoor on the afternoon of June 4.

Child Abuse Investigation: Officers responded to allegations of child abuse in the South Creek neighborhood on June 7.

Melissa Gurreonero has taken over as principal of Coconut Creek High School.

She has just assumed the duties of running the large high school and is eager to meet the teachers and students.

Gurreonero comes to Coconut Creek from administrative positions in which she coached Broward school principals. Most recently, she served as Director of Teaching and Learning for the North Regional Office. Before that, she was principal of Forest Glen Middle School.

“I believe in servant leadership, and I will listen to students and teachers. I want Coconut Creek High to connect to the community. I want to build a high standard of excellence and learning,” said Gurreonero.

She wants the school to be a positive place where students can receive a high-quality education and also participate in clubs, music groups, and athletic teams.

“I want our athletic teams to do well, and I want this school to be a place where teachers will want to come to work every morning, and students will want to come here and learn,” said Gurreonero.

Dr. Nicole Nearor, the former Coconut Creek High principal, left Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) to take a leadership position in Texas. She joined the Fort Worth Independent School District as an executive director, and now works under former BCPS Superintendent Peter Licata, according to BCPS information.

Monarch High School graduating senior Steven Strong has been named a recipient of a College-Sponsored National Merit Scholarship, earning a National Merit University of Florida Scholarship through the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Strong was among 26 Broward County Public Schools seniors selected for the prestigious honor, which recognizes outstanding academic achievement, leadership, community involvement and potential for success in higher education.

Officials from participating colleges and universities selected scholarship recipients from among National Merit Scholarship Program finalists who plan to attend their institutions. The awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the sponsoring college or university.

“Congratulations to these outstanding students for earning one of the nation’s most prestigious academic honors,” BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn said. “Their achievements reflect years of hard work, dedication and perseverance, as well as the support of their families, teachers and school communities. We are incredibly proud of their success and look forward to the impact they will have in the future.”

This year, 138 higher education institutions are underwriting Merit Scholarship awards through the National Merit Scholarship Program, including 69 private and 69 public colleges and universities across 42 states and the District of Columbia.

Florida Power & Light Co. will continue investing in grid improvements across Coral Springs, Parkland and Coconut Creek in 2026 as part of its ongoing effort to reduce power outages and speed restoration following severe weather.

The planned infrastructure upgrades include underground power line projects, smart grid technology, tree trimming, and power pole inspections, all designed to strengthen the electric system before future storms.

In Coral Springs, FPL plans to install four intelligent devices that automatically detect outages and reroute electricity to minimize service disruptions. Crews will also trim vegetation along 110 miles of power lines and inspect 908 power poles, replacing or strengthening those that do not meet company standards.

Parkland is scheduled to receive three Storm Secure Underground Program projects that will replace overhead neighborhood power lines with underground lines. The city will also receive one intelligent device installation, 35 miles of tree and vegetation trimming, and inspections of 179 power poles.

In Coconut Creek, FPL plans six underground power line projects as part of its Storm Secure Underground Program. Crews will trim vegetation along 46 miles of power lines and inspect 550 power poles.

According to FPL, its statewide reliability investments include more than 246,000 intelligent devices installed across its electric grid and nearly 2,000 miles of overhead neighborhood power lines converted to underground service. The company said self-healing smart grid technology prevented more than 1.6 million customer interruptions in 2025.

FPL reports that 85% of its main power lines have been hardened or placed underground and 97% of its transmission structures are now constructed of steel or concrete to improve storm resilience.

“Our employees work every day in Coral Springs, Parkland and Coconut Creek to provide safe, reliable electric service while keeping customer bills as low as possible,” said Juliet Roulhac, FPL’s external affairs director. “By continuing to invest in our electric grid, we are strengthening resilience year-round and helping our communities recover faster when severe weather impacts our area.”

North Broward Prep Middle School Softball and Flag Football Teams Win Gold Coast League Championships. {NBP Athletics}

North Broward Prep capped off an impressive middle school sports season with a pair of league championships and announced plans to launch a varsity flag football program in the spring of 2027.

The middle school flag football team completed a perfect 6-0 season to capture the Gold Coast League Championship. The Eagles dominated throughout the year, outscoring opponents 123-12 while recording four shutouts. They won by an average margin of 18.5 points per game.

The championship roster featured Gianna Alonge, Tamia Baker, Billie Baron, Nina Bossola, Ellie DiGregorio, Annie Fishman, Ellie Garcia, Jessie Lamchick, Sylvie Lemaitre, Avery Lopez, Bryn Resnick, Alexandra Routman, Saana Ruutu, Brooke Sackett, Harper Snyder, Arielle Solomon, Liliana Taylor and Suzanne White. Eighth-grade players from this team will have the opportunity to continue the program’s success when North Broward Prep launches its inaugural varsity flag football team in the spring of 2027.

The middle school softball team also captured a championship, finishing 6-0 to secure its second consecutive league title. The team roster included Isabella Berrios, Dallas Blum, Emily Cooper, Nava Goodhart, Madison Groudan, Madelyn Key, Katherine Kurzenberger, Samantha Miller, Julia Oakes and Suzanne White.

A Coconut Creek man accused of receiving $20,000 from a Texas couple in a Chase Bank scam may be linked to additional victims, according to investigators probing the alleged fraud scheme.

According to a Coconut Creek Police Department arrest affidavit, Stephan Kofi Bio, 31, was taken into custody on June 3 and charged with an organized scheme to defraud a person 65 or older.

Records show the investigation began after the Dallas Police Department forwarded a fraud case to Coconut Creek detectives involving a 78-year-old woman and her 78-year-old husband. Investigators said the couple received a phone call from someone claiming to be a bank employee who warned them about alleged internal fraud at their financial institution.

According to the affidavit, the caller instructed the victims to travel to a Chase Bank branch in Dallas and conduct what was described as a “roofing” transaction to determine whether bank tellers were involved in fraudulent activity. Believing they were helping protect their money, the couple withdrew $20,000 from their USAA account and deposited it into a Chase account while remaining on the phone with the caller.

The victims later realized they had been scammed and reported the incident to authorities.

Detectives said subpoenaed bank records identified the recipient account as belonging to SB94 LLC and listed Bio as the account holder. Investigators further said that not only was the $20,000 deposit discovered and confirmed, but it was also followed by multiple Zelle transactions to various individuals, suggesting a string of similar crimes. 

Court records state that detectives contacted Bio in April 2025 and that, during the encounter, he admitted the bank account belonged to him. Investigators said Bio claimed the money was connected to his music business, but no evidence to support that claim was provided. 

Bio was arrested and booked into the Broward County Main Jail. An investigation into whether there were additional victims is currently underway.

A driver was arrested for a third DUI offense and driving as a habitual traffic offender following a traffic stop in the 4500 block of West Copans Road.

A juvenile was reported missing from the Banyan Pointe community.

Hillsboro Liquors reported a retail theft involving approximately $77 in merchandise.

Walgreens on Coconut Creek Parkway reported the theft of five cans of infant formula valued at about $182.

Pet Supermarket on State Road 7 reported a retail theft totaling approximately $369.

A traffic stop on West Sample Road resulted in a marijuana possession arrest after a vehicle fled from officers.

May 27

Police investigated a suspected bank scam after a resident of Windsor at Coconut Creek reported a man claiming to be a Bank of America employee offered to pick up a credit card from the victim’s home.

A 76-year-old resident reported losing $5,000 in a fraud scheme.

Officers responded to a domestic disturbance at a business in Coconut Creek.

May 28

AT&T reported approximately $4,000 worth of batteries stolen from a communications tower on Vinkemulder Road.

Police investigated allegations of elderly neglect and child neglect in separate incidents.

A traffic stop on West Sample Road led to the arrest of a man accused of possessing marijuana with intent to distribute and possessing two firearms.

A resident reported receiving harassing messages from unknown phone numbers.

A vehicle was damaged in the Lyons Road area.

May 29

A resident of Club Caribe reported criminal mischief at a home.

Police arrested a driver on a felony charge of driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop on West Sample Road.

Officers investigated a domestic violence-related aggravated assault in the Cocoplum Circle area.

A second juvenile runaway was reported from Banyan Pointe.

May 30

Kohl’s reported the theft of approximately $600 worth of travel-size perfume.

Home Depot reported a retail theft involving merchandise valued at about $449.

A narcotics arrest was made at the Coconut Creek Community Center.

Police responded to a reported suicide threat in the Karanda community.

Officers investigated a domestic battery at the Legacy Apartments.

May 31

A disturbance at a Marathon gas station led to an arrest on an obstruction charge.

Walmart reported a trespassing incident that resulted in an arrest.

Police arrested a man accused of aggravated battery on a pregnant woman and violating an injunction.

June 1

Officers arrested a driver for DUI following a traffic stop on State Road 7.

A scooter valued at approximately $634 was reported stolen from Broward College.

Police investigated a dating violence incident at Windsor Coconut Creek that resulted in an arrest for domestic battery by strangulation.

A second DUI arrest occurred near Sample Road and Lyons Road.

Officers responded to an unattended natural death in Wynmoor.

During the May 28 meeting, the commission read a proclamation supporting the fight against bladder cancer.

This proclamation was particularly meaningful because Vice Mayor John Brodie is currently battling bladder cancer, while John Railey, the husband of Commissioner Jackie Railey, is a survivor.

Both spoke passionately about the need for people to get checked for the disease, highlighting the personal impact within local leadership.

Commissioner Joshua Rydell read statistics from the proclamation, noting that bladder cancer is the seventh most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, with 85,000 new diagnoses and 18,000 deaths annually. These numbers, he emphasized, seriously impact families.

“This proclamation means a lot to me, and I want to bring awareness to the community because too many men wait until it is too late,” said Brodie.

Brodie has an aggressive form of bladder cancer that is now in the maintenance phase of treatment, and he assured the audience, “I am continuing to fight this cancer.”

Papamigos has been sitting in my backyard all these years as I’ve watched them go from a simple taco food truck to a full-blown gastropub.

They’ve been consistently great since 2021, and that shows since they’re one of the few restaurants to survive the turnover in the Regency Lakes Village Center plaza all these years. Except for the day I came to review them.

There is actually a fairly interesting story behind Papamigos because it is not trying to be a traditional Mexican restaurant, sushi bar, or seafood restaurant. The concept was built around what the owners call a “Mexi-Crasian” fusion, blending Mexican, Asian, and South Florida coastal influences into a single menu.

That explains why you’ll find birria tacos sitting next to sushi rolls, poke bowls, ceviche, oysters, and seafood dishes.

This location is tucked away in the corner of the plaza, and, like many a gastropub, it has TVs showing sports, metal chairs, a bar, and occasionally live music on its limited patio on weekends.

Inside Papamigos.

We went for the Dip Trio ($18) and opted for Guacamole, Mango Salsa, and Hot Queso. The guacamole was fresh and citrusy. They don’t skimp on the cilantro either, which I love.

The Mango Salsa was growing on us as we ate. We were expecting a wetter texture; we would have preferred it if they had mildly blended the mangoes instead of chopping them rough. It eats more as a garnish than a salsa. But the flavors are there, and they are fantastic. Another burst of cilantro on top. The Hot Queso needs no notes. It’s perfect.

Dip Trio

We came for Sunday brunch, and in addition to their regular menu, they had a special brunch menu with 5 unique items, $1.50 oyster and drink specials.

Gordito Sangwich

Then we ran into disaster. For the first time in years of going there, I tried the intentionally misspelled Gordito Sangwich ($17). It was supposed to be tender carne asada, blanketed in mozzarella and authentic Mexican cheese, accompanied by pico de gallo, an egg cooked over easy, and a zesty verde sauce, sliced avocado, and smoky Chipotle mayo. Sounds great, right?

The problem is someone did not clean the grill that morning, and all dishes with carne asade were basically infected with the taste of chalky asphalt. This overpowering bitterness seeped into the sandwich and the blackened grill marks on the eggs. It was bad.

Carne Asada Quesadillas

Even my wife’s carne asada quesadilla ($16) was an unlucky victim. The portion is normally huge, filling (and delicious), with 4 giant quesadilla wedges. But something was off this Sunday. The cheese-to-meat ratio was severely unbalanced, and it became a bloated mess.

We’ll chalk this up to a bad cook day because normally things are excellent.

Spicy Tuna Taco

Thankfully, the rest of the meal was saved once the staff replaced those items. The spicy sushi tacos ($13) are one of the more unique items on the menu. Spicy tuna, jalapeno, avocado, cucumber, rice, spicy mayo, eel sauce, Sriracha, with sesame seeds and masago sprinkled on top of the rice “shell”. Delicious.

Despite the first couple of items I reviewed having no spice level, most of the menu is really spicy, like this taco. Prepare accordingly. We went back for their tried-and-true Lala’s Street Corn ($14). Roasted corn, sour cream slathered, queso fresco, topped with tajin, Chipotle mayo, Sriracha again, and fresh cilantro. Highly spicy but excellent as usual.

Despite the hiccups that day, the years that my friends and many other happy patrons have spent eating here and gushing about the food should outweigh the risk of an occasional kitchen misstep.

Papamigos isn’t trying to be the most authentic Mexican restaurant in South Florida. Instead, it embraces a distinctly South Florida identity, where birria tacos, sushi rolls, ceviche, oysters, and margaritas coexist on the same menu without apology. And they’re definitely not apologizing for the spice levels either.

Milo and Quill {Broward County Animal Care}

Two lovable pets at Broward County Animal Care are hoping to find their forever families, and shelter staff says both have plenty of affection to give.

Five-year-old Milo, a 71-pound American Bulldog mix, has been waiting for a home since arriving at the shelter as a stray last November.

When he was found, Milo was in poor condition, suffering from fleas, an ear infection, irritated skin, a heart murmur, and hip dysplasia. After receiving treatment and care, Milo has made a remarkable recovery. His skin and ears have healed, and he now enjoys playing and exploring like any happy dog.

Milo has also become a favorite among participants in Broward County Animal Care’s Broward Buddies program, where community members take shelter dogs on day trips and outings. Those who have spent time with him frequently describe him as sweet, calm and well-behaved.

According to shelter staff, Milo knows how to sit on command, especially when treats are involved. He is also comfortable around children and other dogs and enjoys playing with canine companions his own size.

Milo is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and can go home the same day he is adopted. His adoption requires only the $25 Broward County pet registration fee.

Cat lovers may want to meet Quill, a 6-year-old tuxedo cat with a friendly personality and a love for cuddles.

The 8-pound domestic shorthair is known for climbing into laps and soaking up attention from visitors. Quill also enjoys climbing and perching in high places, making a cat tree a perfect addition to his future home.

Shelter staff says Quill gets along well with his feline roommates and could do well with another cat, provided proper introductions are made.

Quill is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. His adoption fee has been waived, leaving adopters responsible only for the $25 Broward County pet registration fee.

Milo, Quill and many other adoptable pets are available at Broward County Animal Care, located at 2400 SW 42nd St. in Fort Lauderdale. The shelter is open daily for adoptions from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Coconut Creek’s new fire chief, Michael Rodriguez {City of Coconut Creek}

Coconut Creek has a new fire chief.

Michael M. Rodriguez has been promoted to chief of the city’s Fire Rescue. He previously served as deputy fire chief, a position he took in September 2024.

“I feel good about this organization, and I am very happy about where I am professionally,” said Rodriguez. “The fire rescue department will hit its five-year anniversary, and I am excited about the opportunity to help it grow.”

Rodriguez said former Chief Brian Blizzard set a good foundation with his leadership. “I will take it day by day and keep moving forward,” he said. “We have an outstanding team with the best men and women in the business. This makes our administrative jobs easier. I appreciate the trust the city manager and city officials have placed in me to serve this fine organization,” said Rodriguez.

As deputy fire chief, Rodriguez oversaw daily operations, guided strategic initiatives, and supported the department’s continued growth. Previously, he served as the EMS division chief for the Seminole Tribe Fire Rescue. Rodriguez had a 20-year career with Delray Beach Fire Rescue, during which he served as an EMS captain, division chief of fire and life safety, and assistant chief of administration.

Rodriguez has also worked as an emergency room and trauma nurse and as a patient care manager. He has served as an EMS and nursing instructor. Rodriguez holds dual bachelor’s degrees in health sciences and nursing. He also has a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership, according to Rodriguez.

He has been married to his wife, Nadine, for over 26 years. They have two children: Gianni, 25, a graduate of the University of South Florida with a bachelor’s degree in information technology, and Mia, 22, a graduate of Florida Atlantic University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, according to Rodriguez.

Monarch High School Football. {Shotby17}

The High School football teams in Coconut Creek are preparing for the new season and were in action this spring.

Monarch High School defeated Dr. Joaquin Garcia High School 22-0 and Jupiter High School 18-0 in a half against each school. Keshawn Paschall rushed for 120 yards and scored two touchdowns, while Jeremiah Milcent threw three touchdown passes. Bryan Bynes hauled in two touchdown catches and finished with 150 receiving yards. Darren Jeudy added two receptions for 40 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Jeudy also recorded four tackles, including two tackles for loss.

Monarch has won the last four district championships and finished 7-5 last season. The Knights also earned a 39-0 victory over Doral Academy and had more than a dozen players sign to continue their careers at the collegiate level. The Knights will face another challenging schedule this season, beginning with a game against Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School on August 20.

The Knights will then host Miramar High School the following week and will also play at home against Piper, Deerfield Beach, Olympic Heights, and Charles W. Flanagan High School. Their first road game will be against Cardinal Gibbons High School, and they will also travel to Coconut Creek, St. Thomas Aquinas, and West Boca Raton High School. 

Coconut Creek enters the season as the defending district champion after posting an 8-2 regular-season record in 2025. The Cougars also recently wrapped up their spring schedule, highlighted by the program’s annual Garnet and Red intersquad scrimmage. Last season, Coconut Creek opened the playoffs with a 49-20 victory over Mater Academy Charter before falling to perennial powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas High School 45-13 in the regional round.

The Cougars will begin the 2026 season in the National Football Showcase when they travel to face Cypress Bay High School on August 14. Coconut Creek’s home schedule includes games against Plantation, True North Classical Academy, Monarch, Archbishop McCarthy, Piper and Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory. Their road schedule will feature contests against Dillard, Cardinal Gibbons, Boyd H. Anderson and Charles W. Flanagan High School.

North Broward Prep is also looking to build on last season, finishing 5-6. The Eagles concluded their spring season with a matchup against Somerset Academy Charter and will open the regular season at home against University School. NBP’s home slate also includes games against Coral Glades, Pembroke Pines Charter, St. Andrew’s, Coral Springs Charter and Pine Crest. The Eagles will hit the road to face Cooper City, Westminster Academy, Gulliver Prep and Calvary Christian.

Seton Ridge Children’s Center is now enrolling for the 2026-2027 school year, offering a play-based, faith-focused preschool program for children ages 18 months through VPK.

Operating as a ministry of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Seton Ridge Children’s Center, located at 1401 Coral Ridge Drive, has served the community for 36 years, welcoming children from 18 months through VPK in a family-oriented setting focused on curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning.

Located in Coral Springs, the preschool offers programs for young twos, threes, and VPK students, with flexible scheduling options including three-, four-, or five-day programs. They are a part-time program with their main hours from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm or 1:00 pm.

“At Seton Ridge Children’s Center, we fundamentally believe that children are entitled to a childhood that is rich in wonder and discovery,” Maria D’Attile, Director of Seton Ridge, said, adding,  “These early childhood years are when children absorb the world through every experience around them. We want them to explore, investigate, create, and truly enjoy learning.”

Unlike highly structured academic environments for young children, Seton Ridge focuses on developmentally appropriate, child-centered learning, where play serves as the foundation for future success in reading, math, science, language, and social development.

“Our curriculum is hands-on and open-ended because in early childhood, experience is the teacher,” D’Attile said. “Children learn by pouring, building, singing, dancing, imagining, experimenting, and even getting messy. That process is where meaningful learning happens.”

The school follows Florida VPK standards using the Creative Curriculum, and all teachers are certified in early childhood education and trained in CPR. Each classroom includes both a lead teacher and an assistant teacher to support individualized attention and care.

Programs at Seton Ridge incorporate science, art, literacy, music, motor skills, imagination, and social development through interactive activities designed to build independence and confidence.

“We support the development of the whole child,” D’Attile said. “Children need opportunities to take safe risks, solve problems, learn responsibility, and discover the power of communication. Those experiences help create lifelong learners.”

Faith also plays an important role in the school’s culture. Children participate in daily prayers while older preschool classes visit the chapel for age-appropriate talks focused on kindness, compassion, and love.

“We believe children learn best by what they see lived out before them,” D’Attile said. “A loving way of life is what we strive for our children to experience every day.”

One of the school’s most distinctive features is its Imagination Room, where students engage in creative exploration that encourages storytelling, pretend play, and discovery.

The City of Coconut Creek will honor Juneteenth with an evening of live entertainment, cultural tributes, and community activities during its annual Freedom Day Celebration on Saturday, June 20.

The free event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the City Hall Courtyard, located at 4800 W. Copans Road. Residents and visitors of all ages are invited to attend as the city commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates African American history, culture, and achievements.

This year’s celebration will feature live music by The Motown Experience, a tribute act that recreates the iconic sounds, harmonies, and choreography of Motown’s greatest artists.

Attendees will also enjoy high-energy step performances by Rise with Greatness, thought-provoking poetry from a spoken word artist, and a lively trivia contest hosted by an emcee, complete with prizes and giveaways.

The first 100 guests will have the opportunity to design and create their own custom Juneteenth T-shirt.

Food and beverage vendors will be on site throughout the evening, offering a variety of refreshments.

Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and coolers to enjoy the outdoor festivities. Pets will not be permitted at the event.

Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Coconut Creek residents will see their water bills increase beginning June 1.

The city implemented a 3.4 percent adjustment to water and wastewater rates to align with the Broward County wholesale rate increase that took effect in October 2025. According to city information, this adjustment is necessary to cover higher county costs, support system maintenance, fund infrastructure improvements, and comply with regulatory requirements.

Coconut Creek does not operate its own water or wastewater treatment plants. It contracts with the county to purchase water at a reduced sale-for-resale rate and to provide wastewater treatment services. The city is responsible for maintaining and upgrading the local water and wastewater infrastructure that serves residents, including storage tanks, booster stations, water lines, fire hydrants, and valves, according to city information.

Additionally, a major portion of the city’s annual utility costs involves purchasing water from the county, wastewater treatment services, and the maintenance and improvement of local infrastructure.

Broward County sets wholesale water and wastewater rates that help fund the operation, maintenance, and long-term investments needed for regional treatment facilities, according to city information.

Finally, to our students, we are extremely proud of you and wish you the best of luck whether you are moving on to work, gap years, internships, college, high school, middle school, or beginning elementary school or moving on to your next grade. Continue to do your best, follow your interests, and learn from your experiences. Each day is a new opportunity!

Father’s Day is Sunday, June 21. Thank you so much to all the dads out there for all you do for your families and for our community. We are very fortunate to have so many fathers in our community who are always willing to lend a helping hand. We appreciate you and all you do to make a difference! Father’s Day can also be a difficult day for those who have lost their fathers and for those fathers who are missing their children. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery by recognizing June 19, 1865, the day that Union Army Major General Gordon Granger told the slaves in Galveston, Texas, of their emancipation. This occurred more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. The City of Coconut Creek’s Juneteenth Celebration, featuring a free concert, will be on Saturday, June 20, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the City Hall Courtyard, 4800 West Copans Road. The City of Coral Springs is hosting a Juneteenth Celebration on Friday, June 19, 2026, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts, 2855 Coral Springs Drive.

Tradewinds Park {Google Maps}

Construction crews will soon begin major improvements along Sample Road for Coconut Creek residents.

During the May 28 meeting, the commission passed a resolution for an agreement between the city and NAYSAC Corp for the construction of the Sample Road Improvements Project. The contract value is $965,281.

The project is being funded through the Broward County Penny for Transportation Surtax Mobility Advancement Program, which awarded the city a grant for its design and construction, according to city information.

The work includes enhancing accessibility to Tradewinds Park and installing crosswalks, three bus shelters, and other transit-related amenities. The project will take place on Sample Road from Lyons Road to the entrance of Tradewinds Park, according to city information.

The city and Broward County entered an Interlocal Agreement (ILA) in October 2025 to secure grant funding for the project’s construction. Previously, in 2024, the city completed the design phase and obtained all necessary permits from the Florida Department of Transportation. With these steps finished, the city is now ready to begin construction.

According to city information, the construction start date will be announced soon, and the project is expected to proceed shortly thereafter.

Jean Richard Adoux {BSO}

A witness called 911 after discovering a 5-year-old girl alone, crying, and banging on the windows of a locked vehicle outside of a restaurant.

According to Coconut Creek Police, Jean Richard Adoux, 23, of Lauderdale Lakes, was acting as a caregiver for the child with her parents’ knowledge when the incident occurred on May 27 near the 4100 block of West Hillsborough Boulevard, outside La Brasa Grill.

Investigators said a witness parked next to a Kia and noticed the young girl sitting alone inside the vehicle. After entering the restaurant to order food and returning approximately 20 minutes later, the witness reportedly found the child crying and banging on the window and immediately called 911. Records show how Adoux came out, opened the car door, and took the child out.

According to an arrest report, officers reviewed surveillance video from inside the restaurant that allegedly showed Adoux speaking with the manager for about 15 minutes before sitting at a table with the manager for another 35 minutes. Police said the child remained alone in the vehicle for approximately 50 minutes while temperatures outside reached 85 degrees.

An investigating officer noted in the report that the vehicle was turned off with all windows rolled up, creating conditions that could have resulted in severe injury or death of the child.

Authorities said the girl, who is related to Adoux, did not appear to suffer any obvious injuries.

Adoux was arrested and charged with child neglect without great bodily harm and leaving a child unattended in a vehicle for more than 15 minutes.

According to Broward County jail records, he was transported to the Broward County Main Jail and is being held on a $10,000 bond.

The Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber of Commerce will host its annual State Legislative Luncheon on June 4, giving local business and community leaders an opportunity to hear directly from state lawmakers about key outcomes from the 2026 Florida Legislative Session.

The luncheon will take place on Tuesday, June 4, at 11:30 a.m. at the Coral Springs Museum of Art, located at 2855A Coral Springs Drive.

According to the chamber, this year’s legislative session included major policy discussions and decisions expected to affect businesses and communities throughout Florida, including issues involving property taxes, congressional redistricting, housing, infrastructure, permitting, workforce development, and economic growth.

Featured panelists include State Senator Tina Polsky and State Representatives Chip LaMarca, Christine Hunschofsky, and Dan Daley. The discussion will be moderated by Bernie Moyle.

Organizers said attendees will gain insight into the impact of recent legislative decisions, including proposed property tax changes, and learn about lawmakers’ priorities and future initiatives.

The event is open to the public, but registration is required due to limited seating.

Oak Trails Park. {City of Coconut Creek}

Coconut Creek is set to benefit from an expanded and improved park.

During the May 28 meeting, the commission passed a resolution to approve an agreement with Sagaris Corporation for the Oak Trails Park expansion project for a contract of $2,890,000.

The improvements will include two multi-purpose fields for athletics and passive use, and an outdoor fitness area with exercise stations and a half-mile trail running through the park. According to city information, there will be a picnic area and water fountains.

An existing house at the park will be renovated into a nature center with classrooms, restrooms, and an office. There will be one acre of native vegetation, a butterfly garden with an interpretive kiosk, improved pathways, and a parking lot, according to city information.

In 2017, the city recognized an opportunity to expand the park when two adjacent parcels became available for sale. Coconut Creek purchased the two five-acre parcels adjacent to the park on the east and west sides in 2017 and 2018 and received a Florida Communities Trust grant to partially reimburse the city for these purchases, according to city information.

Coconut Creek was obligated to renovate an existing home into a nature center and to create new pathways, picnic areas, multi-use fields, outdoor exercise equipment, and a native planting area, according to city information.

Oak Trails Park is located in the northern part of the city at 4230 Northwest 74 Street.

Coconut Creek Police responded to various calls from May 19 to May 25, 2026.  Below is a detailed account of the incidents handled by local law enforcement during this period.

Thefts & Property Crimes

May 19: A man stole two bottles of liquor valued at approximately $89 from Winston Park Discount Liquor, 5407 Lyons Road.

May 21: A $200 weighted vest was reported stolen from LA Fitness, 5501 Lyons Road.

May 21: Two subjects shoplifted merchandise valued at approximately $440 from Publix, 6570 N. State Road 7.

May 23: Property damage was reported at Tradewinds Park, 3601 W. Sample Road.

May 23: Property damage was reported at the Promenade, 4413 Lyons Road.

May 25: An 85-year-old Wynmoor resident reported losing $4,300 after sending checks to unknown subjects in a fraud scheme.

Other Incidents

May 19: A vehicle crashed into a tree in the 200 block of South Lyons Road after a large rock reportedly became lodged on the gas pedal. The driver left the scene before officers arrived.

May 19: A traffic stop in the 2000 block of Lyons Road led to a warrant arrest.

May 20: A Lyons Creek Middle School employee reported a lost wallet.

May 22: A subject was arrested for loitering and prowling in the 3500 block of Lyons Road.

May 23: Officers arrested a driver for DUI on North State Road 7.

May 24: Officers located 7.6 grams of cocaine inside a Turo rental vehicle in the 4400 block of Northwest 8th Street.

May 25: A homeowner discovered a deceased person on a porch in the Tallawood neighborhood. The death was classified as suspicious/unknown pending investigation.

May 25: A traffic stop in the 3800 block of Coconut Creek Parkway resulted in the arrest of a driver on felony narcotics charges and for driving without a valid license.

Lenin Alejandro Garcia, 28, was arrested on a charge of driving while license suspended, first offense, on May 19.

Rasheed Abdur Muwwakkil, 44, was arrested on a charge of third-degree felony petit theft as a subsequent offense on May 19.

Zachary Cesar Sjogreen, 28, was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on May 19.

Richard Karl Horn, 51, was arrested on a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon on May 20.

Tristan Malachi Azor, 20, was arrested on charges of possession of cannabis under 20 grams and possession of synthetic cannabis under 3 grams on May 20.

Angel Geovany Navas, 23, was arrested on a charge of resisting an officer without violence on May 22.

Byron Omar Quintanalopez, 32, was arrested on a charge of DUI on May 23.

Dajhan Jaeden Jones, 24, was arrested on two separate charges of battery on a law enforcement officer, firefighter, or EMT stemming from incidents on May 23 and May 24.

Jadia Nicole Smith, 21, was arrested on a charge of DUI on May 24.

Jelani Denord, 47, was arrested on a charge of domestic battery on May 24.

Ryan Jermaine Pope, 38, was arrested on charges of possession of cannabis under 20 grams and possession of synthetic cannabis under 3 grams on May 25.

Jania Lashawn Holley, 22, was arrested on a charge of battery on May 25.

Isabela Nieves, 25, was arrested on a felony charge of possession of Percocet on May 25.

Daniela Aguirre {BSO}

An Opa-locka woman accused in a recent prior Miami-Dade test drive theft case was found half-naked, covered in blood, and holding broken glass during an alleged Coconut Creek burglary spree, police said.

According to Coconut Creek court records, Daniela Aguirre, 23, was arrested around 3:52 a.m. on May 9 after officers responded to reports of a burglary in progress at an apartment complex in Coconut Creek.

Police said officers arrived to find Aguirre partially naked, covered in blood, and holding a shard of broken glass while yelling incoherently in a stairwell area. Officers reported she appeared highly agitated and initially refused commands to get on the ground.

Investigators said Aguirre repeatedly resisted officers while they attempted to handcuff her and attempted to grab police equipment. Officers said she even slipped off one handcuff during the struggle, forcing multiple officers to restrain her again before she was fully secured.

According to police, the incident began when Aguirre allegedly forced her way into a neighbor’s apartment after aggressively banging on the front door. When the resident opened the door, investigators said Aguirre shoved the victim backward, entered the residence without permission, and battered the victim inside the home before being pushed back out.

Police said Aguirre then went to a second nearby residence, where she allegedly removed a screen from a kitchen window and attempted to climb inside while yelling, “Let me in, let me in.” Investigators said the resident slammed the window shut, but Aguirre punched through the glass, shattering it and suffering cuts to her arm.

Further investigation revealed that Aguirre had allegedly arrived at the apartment complex driving a truck reported stolen out of Orange County, according to police. Officers said the truck was found still running in the middle of the street with the driver’s door open and no license plate attached. 

Aguirre was transported to Northwest Medical Center for treatment of self-inflicted injuries before being booked into the Broward Main Jail, according to the report.

The Coconut Creek arrest comes just weeks after Aguirre was arrested in Miami-Dade County in April in a separate alleged vehicle theft case involving a dealership test drive.

According to Miami-Dade authorities, Aguirre was arrested after deputies said she stole a 2021 Ram truck during a test drive at Metro Ford Miami while arriving at the dealership in a separate stolen vehicle. Investigators said Aguirre told a salesman she wanted to show the truck to her father before allegedly driving off. She was charged with two counts of grand theft auto in that case.

Janet Hull {David Volz}

Coconut Creek has a new Director of Parks and Recreation.

Janet Hull, who has worked for the department for 13 years, is now the leader, having most recently served as superintendent.

During a recent commission meeting, City Manager Sheila Rose announced Hull as the new director and praised her accomplishments.

Responding to the announcement, Hull said, “This city is an amazing place to work, and the people here are wonderful. I am honored to have this position.”

Looking ahead, Hull said an important goal is to bring the staff together more. She plans to reassess the athletic program and hopes to keep more of the youth athletic leagues in-house.

A certified parks and recreation professional through the National Recreation and Park Association, Hull holds a Master of Science in Exercise Science from the University of Pittsburgh. She has dedicated her career to enhancing community wellness, recreation programs, and public spaces and has more than 30 years of experience in the field, according to Hull.

As the Director of Parks and Recreation, Hull supervises the planning and delivery of community recreation services, maintenance of public parks, and coordination of fitness and athletic programming. Her leadership also supports the department’s contribution to the city’s mission of being a “green city” by emphasizing sustainable development, waste reduction, and equitable access to outdoor spaces, according to Hull.

Ronel Myrtil {BSO}

A man was arrested after police said he threw cookies and bottled drinks during a drunken disturbance inside a Coconut Creek Subway.

According to a Coconut Creek Police Department report, on May 18, officers responded to a 911 call from the Subway at 5415 Lyons Road after employees reported that a disorderly customer was causing damage inside the restaurant and refusing to leave. 

Upon arrival, officers located Ronel Myrtil, 37, of Oakland Park, kneeling on the floor with his hands raised, begging officers to arrest him.

After detaining him, officers spoke to witnesses who said Mytril entered the restaurant and asked an employee where “Debra” was. When told she was not working, investigators said Myrtil became upset, knocked an entire tray of cookies onto the floor, and walked out of the store.

The employee told police Myrtil allegedly threatened him while leaving, saying, “When you see Debra, tell her I’m coming for her neck.”

Police said Myrtil later returned to the restaurant, opened a cooler, and began taking bottles of drinks and smashing them onto the floor, causing them to burst and spill throughout the store. 

Officers said he then climbed onto a restaurant table and refused to leave, yelling at employees and customers. 

Investigators said they smelled alcohol on Myrtil’s breath and discovered a can of Heineken beer and an open case of beer inside his red Tesla parked outside the Subway.

Myrtil was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. He later posted a $300 bond.
