Following Chris Mulligan’s retirement from the Parkland division of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the choice of the new captain now rests in the hands of the city manager.
Selected by Sheriff Gregory Tony are Lieutenant Craig Calavetta, Captain Andrea Tianga, and Lieutenant Michele McCardle.
Lieutenant Craig Calavetta
Second in command to the BSO Parkland division captain since 2017, Lieutenant Calavetta is a Parkland resident who first began his law enforcement career here. In 1991, he came to Parkland as a Public Safety Officer, providing law enforcement and firefighting services. He has since worked in patrol operations, criminal investigations, and the training division.
Lieutenant Michele McCardle
Lieutenant McCardle has served as the Executive Officer in the Weston BSO District since August 2020. She began her career with BSO in 2001 as a Child Protective Investigator, investigating allegations of child abuse, abandonment, and neglect.
McCardle has done extensive work as a detective in the Criminal Investigations Division, overseen the Child Protective Investigations Section of BSO, and worked in the Major Crimes Section of the Criminal Investigations Division.
Captain Andrea Tianga
Captain Tianga oversees the Division of Policy and Accountability. She has worked for the Broward Sheriff’s Office since 2003, most recently as the Executive Officer in the Strategic Investigations Division.
Known for her appearance on the cable television show “Police Women of Broward County” and for being half of the South Florida power couple (her husband, Ozzy, is the captain of the courthouse), Tianga has a lengthy list of credentials and is the only candidate who is already a division captain.
The decision is now left up to City Manager Nancy Morando, who will conduct interviews over the next few weeks. The salary will vary based on criteria, including time of service, rank, and more. The estimated start date is unknown at this point.
