The biggest goals for this year’s South Florida Walk for Apraxia at Coconut Creek’s Tradewinds Park on Nov. 15 are to raise awareness about childhood apraxia of speech and to build a true sense of community.
“We want every family to leave knowing they are not alone and that they are supported and surrounded by people in their community who care and understand,” said Samantha Novick, of Parkland. “This walk is about connection, empowerment, and celebrating the hard work children with apraxia and their families put forth each day. “
Novick is the owner of Bridge Therapy, which is committed to providing individualized, evidence-based speech and language therapy, supporting children and adults, along with their families, to enhance communication and improve quality of life.
Bridge Therapy is excited to serve as the lead volunteer coordinators and sponsors of the South Florida Walk for Apraxia supporting Apraxia Kids, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to individuals with apraxia of speech and their families.
Registration to join the event is free. Once you join as an individual or as part of a team, you will have the opportunity to fundraise if you choose. There are prizes for top fundraisers.
“More than anything, we want the kids to have fun and feel celebrated,” Novick said. “Children with apraxia work incredibly hard every day to find their voices, and this day is just for them. There will be games, activities, and each “Apraxia Star” will receive a medal and certificate to honor their achievements.”
Funds raised will support Apraxia Kids, a national nonprofit dedicated to research, education, and family support. Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder in which the brain has difficulty coordinating the motor plans for the mouth to know when, where and how to move to create speech sounds, syllables and words. Bridge Therapy is honored to serve as volunteer walk coordinators and sponsors for the fourth year in a row.
Bridge Therapy is excited to welcome student volunteers studying speech-language pathology from local universities like Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, and Nova Southeastern University.
“Many families share how hard it can be to find a speech-language pathologist who truly understands and specializes in apraxia, so seeing future SLPs eager to learn about CAS gives us so much hope,” Novick said. “Our goal is to inspire the next generation of professionals to develop a passion for motor-based speech therapy and help shift some of the misconceptions that still exist around diagnosis and treatment.”
