From State Rep. Christine Hunschofsky:
I hope summer has gotten off to a wonderful start for everyone. With school out and many schedules changing, this can be a great time to slow down, spend time with family and friends, and take advantage of some summer savings.
This year, the Florida Legislature once again approved a back-to-school sales tax holiday, and some hurricane and summer supplies are permanently exempt from sales tax. These exemptions can help you save money while preparing for hurricane season and the upcoming school year.
- Subject to the Governor’s approval, the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday takes place this year from July 20 to August 20. It includes clothing, footwear, wallets, backpacks, handbags, fanny packs, and diaper bags $100 or less; school supplies $50 or less; learning aids and jigsaw puzzles $30 or less; and personal computers, tablets, calculators, computer accessories, $1,500 or less.
- Tax Exempt Hurricane and Summer Supplies include batteries (AA-cell, AAA-cell, C-cell, D-cell, 6-volt and 9-volt), portable generators, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, bicycle helmets, insect repellent, sunscreen, life jackets, waterproof tarps (1,000 square feet or smaller), ground anchor systems and tie-down kits, gas/diesel fuel cans up to five gallons.

If you choose to spend some time closer to home this summer, I recommend exploring some of the wonderful parks we have here in Broward County or visit one of our Florida State parks. Whether you are looking to hike, fish, kayak, or simply enjoy time outdoors, there is something for everyone. For more information, visit www.broward.org/parks and www.floridastateparks.org.
I also want to wish you and your family a safe and happy July 4th! The City of Margate hosts a parade from 9 – 11:30 am along Margate Boulevard eastbound from 76th Avenue to State Road 7. Later that day both the City of Margate (5 – 9 pm at the NW corner of 441 and Margate Blvd) and the City of Coral Springs (4 – 9:30 pm at Mullins Park) will be hosting family-friendly fireworks celebrations. Visit www.margatefl.com/521/Fourth-of-July-Parade-and-Fireworks and www.coralsprings.gov/Events-directory/Special-Events/Fourth-of-July-Celebration for more information.
However you plan to spend your summer, I hope you have plenty of time to visit with family and friends. As always, my staff and I are here to help in any way we can.
