This Friday marks the dramatic finale of the Wheelabrator North Broward waste-to-energy plant at Monarch Renewable Energy Park.
The final phase of the demolition will take place at 2600 Wiles Road on June 7, at 10:00 a.m., when the concrete stack and remaining infrastructure, walls, and ramps will implode.
Wiles Road from Powerline Road to the Florida Turnpike near the facility will be closed from 9:30 a.m. until about 10:30 a.m.
Once the demolition debris has been cleared, an additional 24 acres of land will be ready for use, pending approval from the Broward County Commission. This potential expansion, located in unincorporated Broward County next to Coconut Creek, could significantly increase landfill capacity, adding to the current 386 acres at Monarch Hill at 2700 Wiles Road.
