A Coconut Creek woman has been arrested after police allege she admitted to helping move thousands of dollars stolen from a 75-year-old Texas woman who had been deceived by callers posing as Wells Fargo and FBI representatives.
According to a Coconut Creek Police Department arrest report, Ariana Theresa Johnson, 23, was arrested September 5 on charges of organized fraud against a person 65 or older, grand theft from a person 65 or older, and money laundering.
The investigation began after the victim reported falling for a phone scam on May 15. According to police, people claiming to represent Wells Fargo and the FBI convinced her to send $20,000 to resolve problems with her bank account.
Following their instructions, the woman obtained a $20,000 cashier’s check and deposited it into a Wells Fargo account at a Kerrville, Texas, branch. She later realized she had been scammed and contacted authorities.
Records show investigators with the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office traced the receiving account to Johnson and another person who shared a Coconut Creek address. The case was forwarded to Coconut Creek Police in June.
A detective went to the address on June 9 but received no answer. Johnson called police the following day and confirmed that she and her mother had shared a Wells Fargo account, although she said the account had since been closed, according to the affidavit.
During another call on June 11, Johnson allegedly confirmed that the $20,000 had entered the account on May 15.
Bank records obtained during the investigation showed that the victim’s money – along with what police described as other similar suspicious deposits – was withdrawn through multiple electronic and in-person transactions in the days that followed.
Police arrested Johnson at her workplace, Talkin’ Tacos, located in Coconut Creek, on September 5. She later allegedly admitted participating in the scheme and said she acted at the request of a person known as “Spizz.”
According to police, Johnson did not provide information that could identify the person.
Johnson was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
