Fighting cancer and undergoing chemotherapy are challenges for anyone.
Commissioner John Brodie is facing stage one bladder cancer at age 56. An Army veteran, he left a job at the Veterans Administration but chose to remain on the commission.
“I am in the middle of chemotherapy, and I have been receiving treatments every Friday since December 26 and will continue receiving treatment through January. My family has been amazing and helped me, and I have a new grandchild,” said Brodie.
On Sunday morning, January 11, Brodie participated in the Dunn’s Run at Deerfield Beach and completed the 5K run while suffering from the effects of a chemotherapy treatment. His daughter, Jeyda, and son, Jason, and his son’s girlfriend, Daisy, ran with him. “They were my support team during the race,” said Brodie.
He ran the race holding two flags: one representing the fight against cancer and the other the American flag.
Brodie is not letting cancer get him down. “Chemotherapy has slowed me down, and I have been in pain, but I am continuing on,” he said.
Going through treatment is hard, but Brodie said his prognosis is favorable and he believes he will recover. He has discussed his treatment during commission meetings. “You have to listen to your body. I was using the bathroom too much, and I experienced back pain,” he said.
His urologist did an ultrasound and found a tumor that was removed. “I am hoping for a quick recovery, and I want to raise awareness about bladder cancer,” said Brodie.
