The Coconut Creek Commission continues to fight against the Monarch Hill expansion.
During the last meeting, commissioner John Brodie urged Coconut Creek residents to attend the Broward County Commission meeting on Tuesday, January 28, where commission members will vote on whether to grant a permit so Waste Management, Inc., can expand the landfill.
This past year, the Coconut Creek commission members and residents have discussed ways to encourage people to show the county leaders they don’t want the planned expansion of Monarch Hill to move forward.
Waste Management (WM) requests a Land Use Plan amendment for a 24-acre area at 2600 Wiles Road in unincorporated Broward County. This location is part of the 500-acre Monarch Hill Renewal Energy Park. According to Dawn McCormick, director of communications for Waste Management, if the landfill is not approved to use its total horizontal and vertical capacity, it must begin diverting post-recycled construction and demolition debris and bulk waste to the Okeechobee landfill.
“I spoke to about 35 people at the Winston Park Foundation, my HOA,” said Brodie. “The people I spoke to don’t want to expand the landfill. I am trying to rile up the HOAs and get more support. He added that he would arrange bus transportation to take them to the commission meeting.
Local leaders and residents are concerned about the possible effects of the landfill’s expansion. According to Brodie, a study should be conducted to determine whether more residents will suffer cancer if the landfill expands.
According to him, there is no lining under the landfill, and the water table in the area could be contaminated. He added that if the landfill becomes too large, it could collapse.
The Broward County Commission meets at 10:00 a.m. in Room 422 of the Broward County Governmental Center at 115 S. Andrews Avenue.
“We need to work toward closing the landfill,” said Brodie.
