By: County Commissioner Michael Udine
The past few months have seemed like years to our community. I want first to thank all first responders, doctors, nurses, healthcare professionals, and all essential service workers that are on the front lines of the fight against COVID-19.
We, as a community, must continue to be strong and safely help each other; however, we can. The County has worked with federal, state, and local municipalities to put emergency measures into action.
Thank you for doing everything you can to help. All of the actions we are taking now will help us “flatten the curve” and get us back to some level of normalcy.
Elections are coming in August and November. Everyone has questions and concerns about how voting will be affected. As a member of the Canvassing Board, I have seen the strides we have taken in Broward County to create a safe and efficient process.
Now more than ever, we need to expand mail-in ballots to all Broward County residents and continue to provide free return postage so that we can promote contactless elections in the short term. I will continue to work with the Supervisor of Elections as we make the safety and accessibility of this election a priority during the pandemic crisis.
Broward County is moving forward by expediting local road projects and other infrastructure enhancements. These projects can be done while residents are not utilizing roadways at normal levels. This will put money into the local economy by providing jobs to some of our hardest-hit residents.
Since the projects will happen over a large area, these jobs will also allow workers to practice social distancing. I look forward to working with County Government to identify these projects and get this local stimulus up and running.
Finally, as new norms continue to be discussed, and we wrap our heads around them, let’s celebrate Mother’s Day and Memorial Day while we maintain safe social distance. Let’s work through this life-changing experience together as a community.
Staying connected with the residents of District 3 throughout this crisis is a top priority for me. I can be reached as always at MUdine@Broward.org or my office at (954) 357-7003. I look forward to hearing from you.
