Tradewinds Elementary School will soon have a new marquee sign, thanks to some help from Coconut Creek.
During the April 24 meeting, the commission approved a resolution for the Tradewinds Elementary School application for matching grant funds of $5,000 from the Neighborhood Enhancement grant program for sign enhancements.
The quoted cost for the new marquee is $33,820, according to the Tradewinds’ principal, Dr. Priscille Elie.
The city has funded the grant program to provide matching funds for enhancements to the city’s neighborhoods, schools, and nonprofit organizations. Tradewinds has applied for $5,000.00 in matching grant funds from this program for the sign project. The school has agreed to be responsible for maintaining the sign enhancements.
Nancy Fry of the Tradewinds PTA spoke to the commission and said the organization had contributed $7,000 to the sign. “This will greatly increase participation from families at the school and help increase enrollment,” she said.
After some encouragement from the commission, Elie said the new sign would help the school’s curb appeal and encourage families to send their children there.
“This marque sign will be a great opportunity to show people the amazing things we are doing at our school,” she said.
The commissioners supported the resolution, but some suggested other funding approaches should be used. Commissioner John Brodie supported it but said Broward County Public Schools should provide more funding for this type of project.
