Stephanie Perret loves dogs and considers her dog the ultimate best friend.
Perret, who volunteers with Everglades Angels Dog Rescue, has dedicated her time to rescuing and caring for dogs in South Florida.
“A dog fills your home and loves you unconditionally. I am passionate about caring for dogs and working to help all dogs find a loving and caring home,” said Perret.
At the Coconut Creek Dog Expo at Windmill Park on May 2, Perret joined a group of volunteers from various organizations dedicated to rescuing dogs.
One of those volunteers, Anastasia Schott, explained how she began rescuing dogs abandoned in the Everglades and nearby areas. She shared, “We have 35 puppies and 30 older dogs, and we want to find homes for all of them. Dogs provide so much love.”
The expo also attracted city officials. Mayor Jeffrey Wasserman attended with his wife, Kristin, their two-year-old daughter, Olivia, and the family dogs, Lucy and Pearl. “Our dogs love to come to this event, and I love being here. It is important that we take care of our four-legged friends,” said Wasserman.
In addition to promoting adoption, Beckie Michalski, a volunteer with Good Karma Pet Rescue of South Florida, encourages people to foster dogs before making a final commitment. She explained, “We are looking for people to foster a dog, and if the relationship is good, they can adopt the dog.”

Echoing this focus on successful relationships, Randall Haus of Abandoned Pet Rescue noted that meeting potential adoptees is important. “We have a meet and greet with prospective owners because we want to make sure the dog and the family will be a good fit,” he said.
Volunteers and dogs from UFAR Animals Rescue further broadened the expo’s offerings. Gelin Castillo of UFAR, based in Margate, remarked, “We have many dogs and cats that people can adopt. Pets provide so much love to individuals and families.”
The expo included more than 20 vendors providing a wide variety of services and products, mostly for dogs.
