A man was arrested after Coconut Creek police say he was found carrying a holstered handgun on the campus of Atlantic Technical College.
According to the Coconut Creek Police Department, Leonard Andrew Levy, 72, of Coconut Creek, was taken into custody near the school’s Building 11 after a school staff member noticed him walking on campus and alerted on-site school resource officers.
The arrest report notes that the school, located at 4700 Coconut Creek Parkway, is marked with clear signage stating that firearms are prohibited.
An arrest affidavit shows a school administrator approached Levy to see if he needed assistance, then noticed what appeared to be a firearm on his waistband. The administrator flagged down officers, who detained Levy and removed the gun from his possession.
Officers say Levy was carrying a fully loaded Glock handgun with a 17-round magazine.
Despite changes to Florida’s open-carry and concealed-carry laws, firearms remain strictly prohibited on school property under state statute.
According to the report, when officers asked Levy why he brought a gun onto the campus, he declined to answer.
Levy was arrested and transported to the Broward Main Jail and faces a felony charge of possessing a firearm on school property. His bond was set at $25,000.
