The Florida legislative session is now underway, and the commission approved the “City of Coconut Creek’s State Legislative Agenda” at its January 8 meeting.
The resolution directed the city clerk to send a copy of the city’s state agenda for Florida’s 2026 Legislative Session to the Broward County Commission, the Broward League of Cities, the Florida League of Cities, and the city’s state legislators.
The commission is strongly opposed to any ballot proposals to reduce property taxes that do not adequately account for shifting costs onto businesses and rental properties, which would lead to local governments losing the ability to afford public safety and government services, and to a lowering of the quality of life for residents.
They are opposed to any efforts that would force countywide consolidation of E-911/public safety dispatch systems; that would remove a local jurisdiction’s ability to make local decisions in the interest of the public safety of its residents, visitors, businesses, and public safety personnel, and cost taxpayers more money in exchange for less reliable public safety.
The commission opposes efforts to handicap a local government’s ability to influence regional growth management in ways that are fair and consistent with the needs of residents and the local economy.
They are opposed to building out portions of the Florida Turnpike beyond eight lanes without modifications or shifting the construction equally to the east side of the centerline of the Turnpike Main Line.
The commission supports more state funding for school safety measures and mental health at K-12 and higher education, efforts to increase health care affordability, efforts to fight the abuse of controlled substances, transportation funding for the South Florida region, and state funding for water quality, septic-to-sewer conversions, and resiliency projects.
