The Coconut Creek Police Department is warning residents about a new phone scam in which callers clone local city phone numbers to appear legitimate.
According to police, scammers are spoofing phone numbers that begin with the 973 prefix and calling residents, claiming to represent health insurance providers.
So far, police said they have not received reports of anyone falling victim to the scam, but they are asking the public to remain vigilant and help spread the warning.
If you receive a call from a phone number beginning with 973 and the caller claims it is about your health insurance, police advise residents to hang up immediately, as the call is fraudulent.
Police remind residents never to provide personal, financial, or insurance information over the phone unless they initiated the call and are certain they are speaking with a legitimate organization. Anyone who believes they may have been targeted by the scam is encouraged to contact the Coconut Creek Police Department.
