Coconut Creek celebrated the 25th anniversary of its annual Arbor Day free tree giveaway by offering about 600 trees and 1,200 bushes to residents in front of City Hall on Saturday.
People could choose from a variety of native and flowering trees. It was a fun event, and horticulture experts shared their knowledge on how to plant and care for trees.
A group of young people from the community volunteered and helped people select their trees. A DJ provided music, and individuals and families enjoyed spending time together.
“I am super excited about the tree giveaway. This will increase our tree canopy and help sustain the environment,” said Commissioner Joshua Rydell.
It was a family day for Vice Mayor Jeffrey Wasserman, who came with his wife, Kristin, and daughter, Olivia. “This was a fantastic community event, and I liked seeing people get together and select a tree,” he said.
Scott Thomas, a volunteer, spent the morning showing people how to properly plant and care for trees. Mayor Jackie Railey offered information on how to install plants that attract Monarch butterflies.
More trees in Coconut Creek are good for the environment. “This event will help give us a larger tree canopy and more shade,” said Justin Proffitt, director of sustainability.
