The Coconut Creek Police Department is warning residents to be on alert after a local woman narrowly avoided falling victim to an Apple ID scam that’s been making the rounds nationwide.
The scam, which targets users of Apple Pay and other Apple services, involves fraudsters posing as Apple customer support representatives. Victims receive a phone call or text message claiming that suspicious activity or fraud has been detected on their Apple account.
The scammers then attempt to coax users into revealing personal details, including passwords and other sensitive financial information.
According to the department, one Coconut Creek woman was recently contacted by someone pretending to be from Apple. The caller tried to convince her to hand over private account details under the guise of resolving fraudulent charges.
Fortunately, she consulted a friend before taking action—who quickly recognized the situation as a scam and kept the woman from becoming a victim, police said.
