March is the beginning of Spring, and this year, it is also the end of the 2024 Legislative Session, which began on January 9 and is scheduled to end on March 8. Session is a busy time when bills move through the legislative process and we work on presenting a balanced budget. Each State Representative is given seven bill slots to file legislation. Because of this limitation and the fact that Session is only 60 days long, we are not able to file all the bills we would like to and have to weigh carefully on what legislation we will carry.
The following bills that I sponsored have been making their way through the process:
HB 99/101 Social Worker Compact – which would make Florida a compact state and allow social workers in our state to also treat their patients in a compact state. This will help with our workforce shortage and provide a continuum of care for our residents.
HB 285 Pub. Rec./Recording Notification Service, which protects the personal information of people who sign up for the Property Appraiser’s Owner Alert program or other recording notification programs.
HB 1029 My Safe Florida Home Condominium Pilot Program expands the popular My Safe Florida Home Program to include condominium associations.
HB 1049 Flood Disclosure in the Sale of Real Property requires the seller of residential real property to provide specified information to a prospective purchaser and specifies how such information must be disclosed.
HB 1169 Coordinated Systems of Care for Children requires school districts to report certain students outcomes and mental health service funding annually to DOE.
Additionally, several bills were filed to address Property Insurance. One of these is HB 1213 Windstorm Coverage by Citizens Property Insurance Corporation, which would require Citizens to cover windstorm-only policies to help lower the overall insurance costs. Unfortunately, this bill, sponsored by Rep. Cassel and Rep. Roach and which I co-sponsored, was only presented as a workshop and did not get a hearing in committee.
