Coconut Creek has a new mayor.
During the March 27 meeting, the commission unanimously named Jackie Railey, mayor.
City manager Sheila Rose thanked outgoing mayor Sandra Welch for her service. She praised her efforts in fighting the expansion of the Monarch Hill landfill, her advocacy for local schools, and her concern for city employees.
Railey said she was overwhelmed, humbled, and proud to serve the city she truly loves. “I will continue to fight against the expansion of the landfill and the turnpike.”
Important goals for Railey include moving forward with the Mainstreet project and maintaining the city’s small-town feel. “We need to move the city forward, help our small businesses become successful, ensure the well-being of our residents and support our first responders,” she said.
Railey is president of the Wynmoor Community Council and has served as chairperson of the Coconut Creek Community Outreach Advisory Board and the City Redistricting Committee. She had a professional career in real estate and property management. According to city information, she was an administrative assistant to the president and vice president of the Seafarer’s International Union and an executive assistant to a partner at Goldman Sachs.
The commission then voted unanimously to elect Jeffrey Wasserman as vice mayor.
“I am beyond honored to be elected as vice mayor of this beautiful city, and I believe we will have an exciting year,” he said.
Wasserman is an educator with a passion for combining civics with education. He has worked toward encouraging local students to become more involved in understanding municipal government. According to city information, he was first elected to the commission in March 2023.
The commission elects the mayor and vice mayor, each serving one-year terms.
Joshua Rydell, Jackie Railey, and Sandra Welch were sworn into the commission early in the meeting. They all ran as incumbents and won additional four-year terms on March 11.
