A Coconut Creek mother is facing child neglect and obstruction charges after police say her 3-year-old son was found wandering alone, barefoot, and unsupervised near Atlantic Blvd.
According to a Coconut Creek Police Department report, officers responded around 3:00 a.m. on June 8 to the area of 4405 West Atlantic Boulevard after two concerned men discovered a small child walking alone in the apartment complex.
The report shows that the men told officers the boy appeared disoriented, was wearing only pajamas, and was barefoot. Unable to locate an adult responsible for him, they called 911.
By chance, responding officers recognized the child from a prior incident and were able to confirm his identity. Authorities noted that the child was found approximately 100 to 150 feet from Atlantic Blvd, a busy roadway where vehicles routinely speed.
The boy’s residence was located nearby, and when officers arrived, they found the front door and a sliding glass door open. Upon entering the apartment, police made contact with an adult male who was asleep and unaware that the child had left the residence.
The report shows that the man told police he believed the boy’s mother, Rayanna Rainrose, 26, of Coconut Creek, was still home and had not told him she was leaving.
When officers reached Rainrose by phone, they said she was dismissive and indifferent to the news that her child had been found wandering outside. She refused to return home and told officers to leave her child with the man inside the apartment.
Later that evening, officers returned to the apartment to place Rainrose under arrest. When she appeared on the balcony, police say she refused multiple lawful commands to open the door, telling officers she would contact an attorney instead.
After repeated warnings, she was charged with obstruction and, eventually, successfully taken into custody and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. She has since been released after posting a $2,500 bond.
