North Broward Prep’s rich history of success in basketball continued with two more players announcing their commitment.
Senior Raul Perez Ruiz is committed to playing at the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina. He has played on the varsity basketball team for two years, and he has shone as a senior with 19.4 points per game. He was also a first-team all-conference member. Perez Euiz also averaged nearly seven rebounds per game, helping lead the Eagles to 46 wins and two appearances in Regionals. He will play for a team that won seven games next year.
Justin Abson graduated from North Broward Prep in 2022 and began his college career at Appalachian State University before transferring to the University of Georgia.
During his high school career, Abson averaged 13.9 points and 11.1 rebounds per game before going into 32 games as a freshman. He shined on the defensive of the ball, recording 70 blocks, which was the second most ever by a freshman in school history.
As a sophomore, he tallied a season-high 20 points against Georgia Southern and 16 rebounds against Georgia State. Abson will play his first year in the SEC for a team that reached the final of the NIT. They finished the season with a record of 20-17.
On Tuesday, North Broward Prep also had a pair of teams compete in the postseason, and another player announced his commitment. After qualifying as a team in tennis after Districts, the Eagles competed against Pine Crest but fell as a team. Still, Max Freedman advanced to the State Championship in singles. Jacob Hartman officially signed with Bentley University.
“I’m so excited to announce my commitment to further my academic and tennis career at Bentley University, Hartman said. “I want to say thank you to all of my family, friends, and coaches who have supported and helped me along the way.”
Hartman has mostly played number two singles for the Eagles and went 8-6 this year while also winning eight matches in doubles.
In beach volleyball, the Eagles had only one win during the regular season, in their final match against Highland Christian. They came into the postseason as the sixth seed and fell 4-1 against third-seeded Pompano Beach High School.
The baseball team finished the season 21-3 and ranked 15th in the nation, following 4-3 wins against West Boca Raton High School and Killian. Riley Luft recorded a walk-off hit before the Eagles won their opening playoff game 5-1 over Saint Andrew’s School. Mateo Gray tossed six innings, allowing only one run before Kiernan O’Neil got the final three outs. Gray and O’Neil also had RBIs, along with Nikolas Koorse, Max Burkholz, and Tanner Uderitz. They will play St. John Paul II Academy in the final on Thursday, May 2, at 6:30 p.m.
