With school safety at the forefront, an event to raise awareness was especially relevant.

Friday was chosen as “Make Our Schools Safe Day” during the Fourth Annual Tennis Round Robin and Shopping Boutique.

Parkland residents Lori and Ilan Alhadeff created the nonprofit in honor of their daughter Alyssa — one of 17 killed during the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre.

Mayor Rich Walker read the proclamation, “Make our Schools Safe seeks to empower others to collaborate with local government to impact school safety, so administrators consider it as essential as the academic curriculum.”

Held at Parkland Tennis Center at Quigley Park, Lori said the energy was amazing, as well as all of the support.

The event, which included boxed lunches, virtual raffles, outdoor shopping, and of course, tennis, raised over $25,000 for school safety, which will go towards passing Alyssa’s Law nationally and supporting Make our Schools Safe clubs in high schools.

Among the attendees were members of the Parkland Commission, State Representative Christine Hunschofsky, and nationally ranked tennis players Frances and Franklyn Tiafoe.
