North Broward Prep athletic season is underway with mixed results through the first few weeks after a year full of state titles.
The girls volleyball team is 2-1 into the season. They defeated American Heritage High School in five sets, 25-11. 23-25, 25-19, 22-25 and 15-8 to move to 1-0 for the second straight season. They followed that up with another five-set win over Barron Collier High School 22-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-19, 15-12 before falling against Gulliver Prep High School.
Their team consists of Bruna Saporiti, Madison Easton, Destiny Wiggins, Yasmin Tonon, Kirby Gressle, Jayda Palumbo, Evelyn VanderPutten, Ava Swartman, Eden Harris, Riley Dynan, Emma Luehrs, Chelsea Ventura and Kate Lynch.
Next, NBP will play Somerset Academy in their next match on Wednesday, August 23, at 5 p.m. They are 1-5 this year, with their only victory against Avant Gradee Academy.
The cross country team finished 12th in its opening race of the season, highlighted by Willis Gillis’ 13th-place finish. He was followed by Eric Levy, Jackson Rivers, Lucas Wiley, Daniel Robles, Clavin Lukens, Joseph Rondon, Ryan Marder, and Luciano Belizan. The girls top time came from Lucia Casacci. She finished 66th overall and was joined by Avery Lopez and Penelope Boulton.
NBP boys and girls golf teams were watched in action. The boys played their first match in the American Heritage Invitational and came in fifth. Cooper Roth finished seventh overall and shot a 77 to lead the Eagles. Mac Lobdell pitched an 83, while John Marzano recorded an 85. Alexander Naval had an 87. Max Gressele and Anthony Supplelsa shot 88’s. The Eagles will play their next match on Monday, September 9, at The Club at Eaglebrooke.
The girls’ team played a little more than half of their round of the Lady Maverick Invitational before being postponed. Tingting Zhuang led them to eighth place. Jesera Mendez, Cooper Aucoin, Ava Koury, and Jordan Ellis were also in action. Their next match is scheduled for Wednesday, September 11, at Lago Mar Country Club.
The cheerleading team wrapped up a four-day cheer camp at the University of Central Florida, finishing with the top finisher in the jump-off. They won the Pin It Forward award with four ribbons, second in cheer routine, fourth in halftime performance, and six all-American awards.
The football team has has a rough start after beating J.P. Taravella in the Kickoff Classic. They lost against Somerset Academy and Westminster Academy while being outscored 75-13.NBP will face another tough test on Thursday, September 5, against Pembroke Pines Charter.
The Jaguars are 2-0 with wins over Northeast High School and Coral Springs Charter. They beat the Eagles 19-14 last year and scored at least 25 points in both games this season.
