The postseason has featured strong performances across multiple sports for teams in Coconut Creek, highlighted by deep playoff runs in soccer, hockey success, and strong showings on the wrestling mat.
The Monarch High School boys soccer team is in the midst of an impressive postseason run, winning its first two Regional matches to advance to the Regional Final. The Knights, who finished the regular season with 12 victories, reached the District Championship Game before falling 1–0 to Deerfield Beach High School. However, Monarch earned a rematch in the opening round of Regionals as the No. 3 seed and made the most of the opportunity, defeating Deerfield Beach in a dramatic 6–5 penalty shootout.
Monarch followed that performance with a 2–1 victory over Miami Beach High School, as Gabriel Cardoso delivered in the clutch by scoring both goals to send the Knights into the Regional Final. Awaiting Monarch is top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas High School, ranked 12th in Florida and 19th nationally with a 20–6 record. The Raiders captured their District Championship with wins over Cooper City High School and South Broward High School, then advanced through Regionals by eliminating Dwyer High School and South Broward once again.
The Coconut Creek High School boys’ soccer team entered the State Championship as the No. 5 seed but fell 3–0 to Pembroke Pines Charter. The Cougars finished the season with an 11–5–2 record after previously winning their second straight District Tournament title.
The North Broward Prep girls’ soccer team also enjoyed a strong postseason, recently winning a Regional Championship. The Eagles opened Regional play with a 4–0 victory over American Heritage High School. Jayda Palumbo scored twice, while Isabella Cancelier added a goal and an assist. Lila Brown also found the back of the net, with Natalie Benitez, Kaiden O’Neil, and Ella Munoz each recording assists. Goalkeeper Zoie Brown made 10 saves to secure the shutout.
The Eagles followed with a 3–0 semifinal win over Aubrey Rogers High School, as Zoie Brown recorded 11 more saves. Palumbo again scored twice, while Munoz added a goal, and Lila Brown assisted on all three scores.
NBP later captured the championship after winning in penalty kicks. The match did not feature any scoring in regulation, but both teams scored in overtime before the Eagles won 4-2 in penalty kicks. NBP seeded third at the State Championship and will face Cardinal Gibbons High School in the State Semifinals on Thursday, February 19, at 10 a.m.
The Chiefs enter the matchup ranked fifth in the state and sixth nationally, with an impressive 20-0-2 record this season. The two teams previously met earlier this year in NBP’s second game of the season, a matchup that resulted in one of Cardinal Gibbons’ two ties.
Cardinal Gibbons captured a District Championship earlier this season and advanced with a 3-1 victory over Immaculata-La Salle High School. The winner of the semifinal will move on to face either Monteverde Academy or Pensacola Catholic High School in the State Championship game.
On the ice, the North Broward Prep hockey team captured its seventh FPSHL Championship with a 5–3 victory over Spanish River Community High School in the title game. The Eagles now turn their attention to the State Championship, where they have won the past four titles.
The Monarch High School wrestling team placed fifth at the BCAA Championships despite the absence of state-ranked heavyweight Diddier Castillo, who was unable to compete. Ronni Tannariello came in fifth while Tyler Mettelus finished second, . Maxwell Goldin and Jaheim Dawkins also earned fifth-place finishes, Benyamin Simpson placed seventh, and Matthew Tangarife and Aiden Loriston both finished eighth. On the girls’ side, Rosie Klein led Monarch with a second-place finish.
