It was an incredible week at North Broward Prep, with three teams winning District Championships, along with one team adding advancing in Regionals.
Boys Basketball
The boys basketball team won districts for the third time in school history following their win over Somerset Academy on Friday. The Eagles led by one point after the first quarter but then doubled up Somerset 12-6 in the second to take a seven-point lead into halftime despite not making a three-pointer.
Ben Daniels and Ryan Weiss each knocked down triples in the third quarter to extend the lead to 13. Enrico Borio finished with a team-high 25 points, including 21 in the second half. Alex Wigginton was also in double figures with 18, while Junxi Yang had 13. Raul-Perez Ruiz and Dylan Hoffman also scored to push NBP to 20-7 this year.
“It was really exciting for the kids, and I was proud of the way we played to win the District Championship,” said Head Coach Casey Wohlleb. “Somerset is a talented team, and we felt really good about the win with a couple of guys really stepping up.”
Next up: They wait to see who they will be playing next.
NBP Hockey
The NBP hockey team won their second straight FPSHL Championship, sweeping Cypress Bay High School in the best-of-three series. The Eagles, who won the State Championship a season ago, outscored their opponents 15-7 in the two games to move to 22-0-1.
“I’m happy for the team and happy for the seniors,” said Head Coach Jim Gabrione. “It’s a nice accomplishment for them to go undefeated and win the league, but that’s never our main goal. Our main goal is winning state championships, and that’s all we are worried about right now.”
NBP is set to play in the State Finals later this month in Fort Myers.
Middle School Boys Basketball
The NBP Middle School boys basketball team also went undefeated in the regular season, then beat Calvary Christian and Pine Crest School in the final to win the Gold Coast League Championship.
Girls Basketball
Coming off their second District Championship in school history, the North Broward Prep girls basketball team picked up their first win in Regionals over St. Brendan High School.
The Eagles entered Regionals as two seed. Their win gives them 21 on the year extending their school record. Riley Weiss, who came into the game averaging nearly 30 points per game, had 32. She also went on to win Florida Athletics Coaches Association Player of the Year along with her coach Gardner Michel.
“Riley is a leader and captain of the girls team,” said Head Coach Gardner Michel. The girls look up to her.”
Alexa Schwartz added Kaydie Sturm and Meadow Henningsen all had ten points, while Samantha Edelson, Gemma Clouse, and Jiayi Zhou all scored. Coach Garner felt the team’s defense was the key to the team building on their lead.
Next, NBP will play Somerset Academy in the Regional Semifinals. This will be a rematch of the District Championship, which NBP won 58-48. Somerset defeated Mater Lakes Academy for their 18th win of the season.
