The shooter who killed a 19-year-old man in Coconut Creek last November was acting in self-defense during a drug deal and will not be charged with murder, authorities said Wednesday.
Bryce McFadden suffered gunshot wounds to his head at the Coco Parc condominiums at 801 Lyons Road on Nov. 5 around 5:44 p.m., according to Coconut Creek Police.
During their investigation, detectives learned McFadden had arranged on social media to buy drugs from a person he didn’t know, police said.
When the person arrived to make the drug deal, McFadden tried to rob them using a stolen firearm, according to detectives.
The would-be drug seller, who was also armed, then shot McFadden, police said.
The shooter’s name was not immediately made public Wednesday.
Detectives had submitted a probable cause affidavit to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office Homicide Trial Unit (HTU) for a charge of felony murder against the shooter, based on the fact that the killing happened during an illegal drug deal, according to investigators.
The HTU determined that the homicide was justified because the shooter was acting in self-defense, police said.
Additional details about the case were not immediately available Wednesday.
