Parkland’s Captain Jan Jordan with the Broward Sheriff’s Office gave the city commission an update on crime and prevention at Wednesday night’s meeting.
In 2017, Parkland was ranked the fourth safest city in the State of Florida and Jordan said the city is fortunate it does not suffer from violent crime. However, vehicle burglaries and thefts are up. Last year, there were 44 auto thefts in Parkland and 43 of the victims were residents who left their doors unlocked and keys inside. There were also 87 vehicle burglaries. The burglaries that occurred residential areas were due to unlocked vehicles. The crimes that were forced entry occurred in the parks and some of the shopping centers.
Out of the auto thefts, 15 cases have been cleared and all of them were committed by juveniles. Another case cleared was a family member who took the car.
Jordan said there will be more of a police presence at night and patrol cars will be highly visible. They are also handing out door hangers to remind residents to lock their cars.
On February 27, BSO will be holding a city-wide meetings to discuss crime at the Parkland Recreational and Enrichment Center and all residents will be invited to attend. Details soon.
