The commission is concerned about the possibility that voters will abolish property taxes.
During the December 11 meeting, the commission voted to cancel a $150,000 contract with Redevelopment Management Associates (RMA) that had been approved in October. The company was hired to perform research on the redevelopment of the city’s small businesses.
Commissioner Joshua Rydell brought up the item during commissioner comments and said that, because he believes property tax cuts are coming, the city must be more careful with spending.
Mayor Jackie Railey said the commission needed to act quickly to terminate the contract.
“There is uncertainty about what is going to happen in legislation, and there are so many variables. We should table this until a later time,” said Railey.
Commissioner Sandra Welch said she believed the city needed more information before making a significant decision. She said it should be placed on the agenda for an upcoming meeting.
Vice Mayor Jeffrey Wasserman said he was concerned that it could result in a lawsuit and that the commission might consider terminating other contracts that had been approved. He said the work RMA was contracted to do could lead to more revenue for the city.
City Attorney Terrill Pyburn said the city has the right to terminate the contract with 30 days’ notice, but would have to pay for services already provided. When asked if the city could be sued, Pyburn said there is always the possibility of a lawsuit.
Members of the commission are growing concerned about the possibility of losing property tax revenue.
“We would have to go back to the drawing board and make sure our budget is balanced. We are going to educate the pubic about how we use property taxes to provide important city services,” said Railey.
