
BCAA All-Star Soccer Game. {BCAA}
The stars were on display from Coconut Creek in both the BCAA basketball and soccer all-star games, while other local athletes continued to make history this season.
The Monarch High School boys soccer team featured Luca Lopez, Diego Barrera, and Marco Cuesta in the All-Star Game, along with their coach, Eric Swickle. The Knights had a terrific season and, despite losing in the district final to Deerfield Beach High School, went on to beat them in regionals, then advanced to the regional final after a win over Miami Beach High School.
Lopez led the team with 19 goals, while Barrera scored six times and added six assists. Cuesta also contributed two goals during the season. Nadua Lawrence was selected from the Monarch girls’ soccer team after helping the Knights win eight games. She appeared in 17 games and logged 1,230 minutes of action.
Nikyle Campbell and Eric Hammond represented Monarch on the boys’ basketball side. The Knights had a strong year, winning 13 games before falling to Boyd H. Anderson High School in the district tournament. Campbell averaged 8.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, while Hammond averaged three points and 2.7 rebounds.
Coconut Creek High School also recognized several athletes. Kareen Weekes was selected from the boys’ soccer team after a strong season in goal for the Cougars. Weekes recorded 28 saves in 17 games as the team went 11-5-2 and won its second straight district title. I’Jah Chin and Jonathan Choute represented Coconut Creek on the basketball side. Chin appeared in 14 games and averaged 4.3 points per contest, while Choute contributed defensively and averaged nearly a steal per game.
North Broward Prep is full of college commits and has seen a strong start to the season from one of its newest, Zach Tavarez. In his first season with the Eagles, the junior recently committed to Baylor University. After beginning his high school career at Archbishop McCarthy High School and recording six wins on the mound, Tavarez transferred to North Broward Prep and has already made a significant impact during the first month of the season with the baseball team. The right-hander is currently hitting .346 and has also made six appearances on the mound, recording a win and a save.
The girls’ lacrosse team at North Broward Prep also made history this month. Stella Faccidomo set a school record with 14 goals during a win over Western High School. The Eagles improved to 7-3 and are currently ranked 89th in the nation. The boys lacrosse team has also found recent success winning four straight following victories overCalvary Christian Academy, American Heritage High Schoo, Cardinal Gibbons and West Broward High School. Christian Deering leads the team in scoring with 34 goals , while Tanner Gilman and Chase Rosenstrauch have combined for 35 and Troy Burns has 10.
