The Coconut Creek Commission is preparing to escalate its conflict with the Broward Commission if it approves Waste Management Inc.’s plan to expand the Monarch Hill landfill.
During the February 13 meeting, the commission agreed to a resolution to give consensus for the city to move forward with a lawsuit if the county commission approves the expansion. Every member of the Coconut Creek Commission has consistently spoken out against any expansion of the landfill. Commissioner John Brodie has said the landfill should be closed, and garbage should be sent to a location in Okeechobee.
According to Vice Mayor Jackie Railey, the landfill will close in 2030 under current plans, but if WMI receives approval to expand, it could be open for another 15 years. She said the city’s water is already contaminated because the landfill’s increased weight is damaging its lining, and more toxins are entering the water.
“There has to be a better way to dispose of our trash. The safety of our residents always comes first,” said Railey.
The county commission will consider WMI’s request for an expansion during the February 25 meeting. This item came up at previous county meetings, but the commission put off making a final decision. According to Railey, the city is preparing bus transportation to the county meeting.
