The Coconut Creek Commission remains determined to halt the expansion of the Monarch Hill landfill despite a recent delay by the Broward County Commission.
During a lengthy meeting on January 28, numerous residents voiced concerns about the landfill’s potential expansion. Despite these objections, the county commission voted to postpone the decision until February 25, when they will again consider whether to allow more trash to be placed at the site.
Coconut Creek Commissioner John Brodie expressed frustration over the delay. “We were told to wait 30 days, and I don’t think we should have to. We need to close this landfill,” he said.
Before the county meeting, Commissioner Brodie and Joshua Rydell encouraged residents to attend and voice their opposition. To assist, the city provided bus transportation from City Hall.
Brodie highlighted the shared concerns of local officials, including those from Deerfield Beach, about the potential health risks associated with the landfill expansion.
“We may consider litigation against the county if the expansion plans are approved,” Brodie warned.
Commissioner Jackie Railey also voiced her dissatisfaction with the county’s delay. She believes any expansion would pose significant health risks to the city’s residents.
“I think it was a slap in the face to us. We are prepared to hire an attorney and take legal action,” she said.
