State Rep. Christine Hunschofsky
By Kevin Deutsch
Representative Christine Hunschofsky will be honored for her mental health advocacy by Mental Health America of Southeast Florida, an organization promoting mental health, the legislator announced this week.
Hunschofsky will be among the honorees at the 26th Annual EPIC Awards Luncheon held May 25 at the Signature Grand in Davie.
As mayor of Parkland during the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting in 2018, Hunschofsky mobilized mental health services and resources for the community and continues to advocate for those in need of treatment.
In her first term as a state legislator, Hunschofsky filed legislation to create the Commission on Mental Health and Substance Abuse. She was also appointed to serve on the commission by House Speaker Chris Sprowls and currently serves as chair of the commission’s Business Operations Subcommittee.
“This award is very special to me,” Hunschofsky said in a prepared statement. “I saw first hand the need for services in our community not just in the immediate hours and days after the [Marjory Stoneman Douglas] shooting but now in the years following. Taking care of our mental health and physical health is key to living a healthy life, and I am pleased to bring my shared experiences to the state level and work to make a positive difference for Floridians.”
Paul Jaquith, president of Mental Health America of Southeast Florida, said the organization’s awards are presented to “members of our community who have exhibited exceptional service to our community through their actions, advocacy, leadership or service delivery to the most vulnerable in our community.”
