If you want to be your very own crime fighter in Parkland, here’s what you need to do to keep your valuables safe – and get this: no special skills are necessary.

Since February, deputies at the Broward Sheriff’s Office in Parkland have responded to seven vehicles burglaries in which five firearms were taken – and they suspect that in some instances the doors were unlocked.

According to detectives, the car burglars come during the cover of night and walk from driveway to driveway pulling at car door handles bypassing the cars that are secured and enter the ones that are unlocked.

Once inside, the burglars rummage around collecting victims’ valuables such as designer sunglasses, loose change and, in some cases, firearms.

As of now, only one of the guns have been recovered.

“Weapons left in a vehicle may be used to commit more serious offense,” said Captain Mulligan.“Don’t enable criminals by giving them easy access to weapons.”

Parkland deputies continue to educate residents at meetings and events about the importance of removing valuables and keeping doors secured at all times. Unfortunately, these thefts aren’t isolated to Parkland. BSO and other law enforcement agencies throughout the state and country also promote the same safety message through social media campaigns such as the #9PMRoutine and #LockItOrLoseIt.

“Not locking doors, leaving valuables and key fobs in vehicles increases the likelihood that criminals will target our community, “ said Mulligan who stressed that criminals use social media just like we do and will talk and tell each other where they can be successful.
