From Mayor Christine Hunschofsky:
While it seems like the end of the school year was not that long ago, we are already halfway through the summer. In the summer months, some families go away, but many stay in town. For those that are here in the summer, please take advantage of all the activities our city has to offer.
Fourth of July is a popular holiday in the USA. In Parkland, we do not have a fireworks celebration, but many neighboring cities do. Fireworks can be a source of anxiety not only for our military veterans but also for many of our residents who heard the shots fired in the MSD 1200 building on February 14. Again, I would like to remind everyone that fireworks are not only illegal for consumer use in Florida, but they also cause incredible stress, anxiety, and fear for many in our community. Please be considerate of those around you who are suffering and may be impacted.
This summer, we have once again added activities and fun events. Therapy Dog Thursday has returned. The dogs will be at the P-REC on July 11 from 4pm-6pm and at Eagles’ Haven on July 25 from 4pm-6pm. The Fishing Derby is on July 13 from 8-10 am at the Pine Trails Park Fishing Pier. Additionally, we have a Gamers’ Tournament and Black and Light Party for middle and high schoolers on July 19 from 6:30 pm -8:30 pm at the Parkland Library. You can find out more about all our activities and programs by visiting our city calendar at www.cityofparkland.org/calendar
Eagles’ Haven Wellness Center located in the Shoppes at Heron Lakes Plaza next to Tunie’s will also be open throughout the summer, Monday through Friday from 9 am-7 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10 am-4 pm. Please stop by, have a cup of their delicious coffee, and check the place out. They have ongoing wellness activities throughout the summer, which can be found on their website at www.eagleshaven.org. Also, the Children’s Bereavement Center offers free grief counseling support groups at Heron Heights every Monday from 6:30 pm -8:30 pm. For more information, visit www.childbereavement.org.
Enjoy these summer weeks with your family and friends. I hope you will all have time to relax and recharge. Our City Commission meets on July 10 for a workshop at 6 pm and a meeting at 7 pm at City Hall. As always, feel free to reach out to me at any time at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org with your questions or comments.
I look forward to hearing from you!
