Dahlia Jaramillo is looking forward to playing the role of Helena in Monarch High School Theatre Department’s performance of William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
“We have worked together to create his play, and I have learned to build a character. Being in this play has taught me a lot,” said Jaramillo, a junior.
Colin Tessler, who plays Puck, has enjoyed rehearsing the play. “This has been a fun experience and has helped me become a better actor,” he said.
The production features an original adaptation written primarily by Khaleb LeFlore, a Monarch senior, with assistance from the advanced theatre production class. The students have replaced the older English words in the original play with modern language. This version is like the series Gossip Girl, according to Tatiana Ahlbum, the director.
“This production is a student-owned project. Beyond the script, Monarch students have taken charge of every creative department and moved from being the performers to primary architects of the theatrical experience,” said Ahlbum.
Theatre Department students were responsible for creating costumes, a Central Park set, and lighting plots. Each cue for sound and prop management was developed by student leads who have spent months in construction and preparation. Judges from the South Florida Cappies will watch and review the show, according to Ahlbum.
The public is invited to enjoy this student-led production on Thursday, February 26, and Friday, February 27, at 7 p.m., and on Saturday, February 28, at 1:00 p.m., at Monarch High School, 5050 Wiles Road, Coconut Creek.
Admission is $10.00, and tickets can be purchased online at MonarchTheatreDept.Ludus.com.
