The wrestling postseason featured a Monarch High School duo while the track and field teams faced off, and volleyball began.
Tyler Metellus had a dominating season on the mat, placing in the top three throughout the postseason. After coming in seventh, he earned a spot on the podium at the State Championship. Rosie Kleine also earned her spot after winning her third straight Regional Championship before winning eighth place at the State Championship.
All three Coconut Creek High Schools and the high schools in Coral Springs and Parkland faced off in a track and field meet.
Ivory Edgecomb led North Broward Prep in the 100 and 200 meters for the girls, while Mia Sanguine took first in the long jump and triple jump. Noelle Barthelette also won the 300-meter race, and the team took third place overall. The boys team, who placed fifth, had Jayden Smith win the high jump, and Boston Nguyen take first in the long jump.
Coconut Creek High School’s boys’ team placed fifth, with Kamari Higgins leading the way with a second-place finish in the javelin. Randy Whitehead placed third in the shotput, while Jermaine Gordon shined individually and with his relay team of Kamari Huggins, Nathaniel Black, and Braylon Alexis.
The girl’s team came in eighth, with Ruth Ann Powell and Kayla Shivers earning points. They also placed sixth in the 4 x 100 relay with Nia Ennis, Romaicor Desir, Gabriella Murray, and Salya Campbell.
Monarch High School also competed, with the boys placing eighth. Jaded Beaubrun recorded points in events along with Rickensoen Rozier and two relay teams. Kendall Stephenson highlighted the girls by placing third in the 100 meters and fourth in the 4 x 100 relay with Chelsea Dumas, Zykeria Rutledge, and Ka’Marrie Candy. Sasha Rodriguez also performed well in both the 100 and 400 hurdles.
The volleyball season also began with Monarch High School, which was off to a dominating start with five wins in their first six matches. They had three-set wins over Hallandale, Blanche Ely, and Hollywood Hills High School, while beating Spanish River Community and Coral Glades in four sets.
After dropping the first set on Thursday against the Jaguars, Monarch won 25-11, 25-14, 25-10. Their only loss this year came against St. Thomas Aquinas High School. The Knights won eight games last year and will play Pompano Beach High School on Tuesday, March 18, at 4:30 p.m.
Coconut Creek High School lost their first match 25-18, 23-25, 6-25, 10-25 against Deerfield Beach High School. The Cougars went 7-12 last year and will play Pembroke Pines Charter on Monday, March 17, at 4:30 p.m.
