NBP Weekly Recap: Volleyball Wins Title, Football Records 2nd Win and Much More

North Broward Prep had a busy fall sports week, highlighted by the girls volleyball team winning the Tri-City Showdown.

The Eagles played five matches in two days, sweeping their first four opponents in two sets. NBP defeated FAU High School, West Boca Raton, The King’s Academy, and Boca Raton Christian before knocking off Merritt Island in the championship match.

The Eagles played one match this week but fell to The King’s Academy. They will return to the court on Tuesday, September 29, against Archbishop McCarthy High School at 6 p.m.

The football team beat Westminster Academy 13-7 to move to 2-4 on the season. Mateo Sanchez made a 43- and 21-yard field goal after a perfect snap from his future Boston College teammate Aidan Feld and holder Ryan Redmin before Ralph Diaz connected with Jack Payne for a 40-yard touchdown pass. Next, NBP plays Gulliver Prep on Friday, October 2, at 3:30 p.m. The Raiders are 2-3 this season with wins over Ferguson and Benjamin High School.

The golf team recently competed in the Palm League Tournament at Biltmore, with Elliot Fishman shooting a 73 to place 13th. Alexander Lavan finished three shots back and placed 16th, followed by Cooper Roth, Eli Widom and Jack Messana.

The girls team finished fourth overall, with Jesera Mendez and Ava Koura both shooting 80. Jordan Ellis, McKenzie Hanna and Valentina Ariaty also competed. The Eagles followed that performance with a win over Cardinal Gibbons High School, with Ellis placing first after shooting a 38 and Koura adding a 39.

The cross country team last raced in the Dr. Garcia Bulldog Invite, with Caden Nassar leading the boys’ team and finishing 17th. He was followed by Jackson Rivers, Levi Bekker, Ari Arbel, Calvin Lukens, Josh Dewey, Christopher Rose, and Bronx Barnett. Emily Cooper was the lone runner for the girls team.

The swim team has also continued to improve, highlighted by several significant time drops from last season. On the girls’ side, Emma Rose made one of the biggest jumps, cutting 13.88 seconds off her 100-yard freestyle time and 5.57 seconds in the 50 freestyle. Ariella Agulnik also lowered her times in both events, while Jordin Bekker improved in the 50 freestyle. Bekker, Luciana Garfias Toledo, Claire Rachlin and Radhika Nana also helped the 200 freestyle relay improve by two seconds from last season.

The boys featured Derek Barbag, who dropped 12.44 seconds in the 100 butterfly and 8.57 seconds in the 100 breaststroke, while Aiden Steinberg improved by 8.53 seconds in the 100 freestyle. NBP also improved across its relays, cutting 8.11 seconds in the 200 medley relay, 14.34 seconds with another relay combination and 3.94 seconds in the 200 freestyle relay.
