Parkland Car Burglaries, Thefts, Continue to be Crimes of Opportunities

Car thefts and break-ins aren’t just a Parkland problem, it’s a county-wide issue. But for the residents that live in the city, it’s important for them to feel like their possessions are safe at all times.

Since January, Gina Carter with the Broward Sheriff’s Office reports there were 14 auto thefts in Parkland: in January, there were 11; February 2; and 1 in March. Out of those 14 vehicles, 11 of those vehicle have been recovered. Three of the suspects involved have been arrested, and one suspect is pending arrest.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been 34 vehicle conveyance burglaries: 15 in January; 7 in February; and 12 in March.

Carter said that 28 out of the 34 car burglaries were cars that were left unlocked. All vehicle thefts were from unlocked vehicles with keys or key fobs inside.

When Parkland’s Captain Jan Jordan met with residents last October she said that what made the crimes so preventable is that none of the criminals had broken a window or lock. “They’re all opportunities,” said Jordan. “These have all been opportunities for these kids to come in.”

Jordan said she wasn’t making any excuses, but every one of the stolen cars had a key fob left inside. “When you leave a key fob in your car, it will turn on.”
