From Mayor Christine Hunschofsky:
Happy New Year! I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season and a great start to 2020! With a new decade and a new year, our city continues to work on improving community outreach and communication.
Thank you to all who participated in our Parks and Recreation Master Plan focus groups and surveys. Your input is necessary, helpful, and valued. We expect to have a final report on the community feedback regarding the Parks and Recreation Master plan early in the New Year.
While we work on the master plan, we have not waited to make certain key decisions. At the end of 2019, an idea brought up at our 2018 strategic planning session, finally came to fruition. The city purchased the 24.4 acres on the northwest corner of Hillsboro Boulevard and Nob Hill Road from Beasley Media Group. This land borders 11 acres of city-owned parkland just east of the property. The purchase serves two purposes. First, Lennar had expressed interest in purchasing the property, and now, under city ownership, it will not be developed for housing. Also, between the 24.4 acres purchased and the adjacent 11 acres of city-owned parkland, we will have open green space and opportunities for additional city facilities should they be needed. We will keep you updated regarding the progress.
Speaking of progress – starting this year, our commission meetings will be live-streamed on the City of Parkland website so that anyone can watch the meetings live or view the archived meeting video at their convenience. Our next City Commission meeting is on Wednesday, January 8, at 7 pm. You can view all meeting agendas and backup material at www.cityofparkland.org/cc.
Also, I will be holding office hours on Thursday, January 9, from 4 pm-6 pm at Parkland City Hall. There is no appointment necessary. If you are unable to make it to my office hours, please feel free to contact me via email at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org with any questions or concerns you may have.
We have lots of community events and activities happening in January in Parkland. On January 20, we will have a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. tribute from 5:30-7:30 pm at the Amphitheater. Dr. King challenged all of us to look for the common good and to be of service in our communities. I hope you will join us for this wonderful event. The Farmers’ Market continues at the Equestrian Center from 9 am – 1 pm, with a Health and Wellness Fair on January 5 and the second market of the month on January 19. Parkland’s Family Fun Fest Carnival takes place from January 10-12 at Pine Trails Park and promises to make for a fun weekend!
Keep up with all the events happening in Parkland by following us on Facebook at facebook.com/copfl and subscribing to our e-blast “Parkland on Tap” at cityofparkland.org/notifyme. I always appreciate hearing from residents, so please share your thoughts and comments with me at the e-mail address above or whenever you see me around town — wishing you and your family a happy and healthy New Year!
