Food for Fines program is returning to The Parkland Library in April. An opportunity to eliminate most library fines, Food for Fines will run from Monday, April 1, 2019 through Monday, April 22, 2019. The food items collected will be donated to Food for the Poor in Coconut Creek.

It’s simple—bring one unexpired, non-perishable food item to the library and $1 of library fines will be waived from your record. The more you bring, the more the library will reduce your fine. This fine reduction program applies only to overdue fines. Fees related to damaged or lost items are not included in the Food for Fines program.

Bring your donation to the checkout desk at the Parkland Library.

Crayon Recycling Day, Thursday, April 4, 3:30 p.m.

Children of all ages. Bring your old crayons and have some fun while also helping Mother Earth. In honor of Earth Day this month, the Parkland Library will be participating in the Crayon Initiative, which collects donated crayons, melts them down, remanufactures them and donates them to children’s hospitals. At the library, kids will donate and sort their old crayons, hear a story, learn about recycling, and visit a real Waste Management recycling truck. Parkland Library card required to register. Knit ‘n’ Knowledge, Monday, April 1, 10:30 a.m.

Building with Lincoln Logs (ages 4-8), Tuesday, April 2, 3:30 p.m.

Tiny Tots Social Time (age 9 months to 4 years), Wednesday, April 3, 10:30 a.m.

Reading with the Tail Waggin’ Tutor Finn (K-5 grade), Wednesday, April 3, 3:30 p.m.

Come to the Parkland Library to practice your reading skills by reading to therapy dog Finn. This program encourages children to read by providing a non-judgmental listener and furry friend who won’t mind if you make a mistake. Bring a book from home or choose one at the library. Evening Jazz with the Inner Court, Wednesday, April 3, 6:15 p.m.

Come out to the Parkland Library for a night of jazz and enjoy the live sounds of the Jazz Fusion band The Inner Court as they play a diverse set of funk, rock, Caribbean, Brazilian and other Latin styles. Artist of the Month: Karla Smith

Karla Smith is a self-taught artist in drawing and oil painting. Her degree in Advertising & Graphic Design and 22 years of experience as an art director and Web designer have given her broad exposure to many forms of art. Her oil paintings cover a variety of nature, showcasing her love of flowers, pets and horses. She views art as a never-ending process of learning, and she enjoys observing others’ paintings to see how they achieve the beauty in their works. Through glazing, lighting, and colors – there are so many ways to experiment and keep moving forward! Her work will be on display April 1 through 30.

All Booked Up Book Discussion Group: The Friend by Sigrid Nunez Saturday, April 6, 10:30 a.m.

When a woman unexpectedly loses her lifelong best friend and mentor, she finds herself burdened with the unwanted dog he has left behind. Her own battle against grief is intensified by the dog, a huge Great Dane traumatized by the inexplicable disappearance of its master, and by the threat of eviction: dogs are prohibited in her apartment building.

While others worry that grief has made her a victim of magical thinking, the woman refuses to be separated from the dog. She comes dangerously close to unraveling. But while troubles abound, rich and surprising rewards lie in store for both of them. Elegiac and searching, The Friend is both a meditation on loss and a celebration of human-canine devotion. Writing Buddies (K-5 grade), Saturday, April 6, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Teens will be paired up with young budding authors to guide them through the story creation process. Each child will write and illustrate a mini story to take home. This group meets once a month, and a different genre will be explored each month. Parkland Library card required to register. Juniorettes’ Reading Buddies (grades K-5), Monday, April 8, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Would your child benefit from a Reading Buddy? The Juniorettes’ Reading Buddies is a cross-age, effective method of energizing young readers. Parkland elementary school age students are welcome to attend. When younger students read with older students, literacy skills are picked up in an enjoyable manner. Building partnerships between our high-achieving, high school girls and elementary-age children is an excellent way to reinforce lifelong reading success. Mixed Media Art Class: “Spring Flowers” (adults), Tuesday, April 9, 10:30 a.m.

In this mixed media art class led by instructor Malgorzata Kawashima, students will create a floral still life using ink pens, watercolors, and colored pencils. No experience necessary.
