The Coconut Creek High School Drone Cougars are celebrating an impressive second-place finish at the recent Drone Jamboree.
Held November 15, 2025, at Pines Collegiate Academy 6-12, the Cougars Drone Team was led by students Dentzley Estime, Smith Christianh Mathieu, Rose Valery, and Israel Chery, who represented Coconut Creek High School in a competition that demonstrated precision, teamwork, and remarkable calm under pressure as they navigated a series of demanding aerial challenges.
Math teacher and Drone Cougar Club Coach Almoneva Mahilum said the event pushes students far beyond simply flying drones.
“Drone competitions are fast-paced, hands-on STEM challenges where students navigate themed stations such as Search and Rescue, Package Delivery, and Emergency Response in Fire Situations,” Mahilum explained to Coconut Creek Talk. “Each station is timed at 10 minutes and requires students to overcome specific obstacles using precision, strategy, and quick decision-making.”
She added that the team’s composure was what truly set them apart.
“What stood out most was their composure under pressure. Even when they faced unexpected course changes, the team adapted quickly and supported each other throughout the event.”
Mahilum said the team prepared in small but meaningful increments, squeezing in practice wherever possible.
“Students practiced during their 30-minute lunch breaks twice a week. Their success came from consistent effort, mutual support, and a shared commitment to improving each run.”
According to Mahilum, the program teaches more than technical skills. It also helps shape character.
“It teaches leadership, resilience, and collaboration. Students learn to trust each other, solve problems creatively, and communicate effectively. These are skills that carry into every part of life.”
Sub-coach Frantz Imbert shared in an announcement of the accomplishment his appreciation for the support the school continues to show the students, adding, “Thank you so much for always encouraging us to do our best to uphold the Cougar standard of excellence. Your support continues to inspire our students to aim high and grow through meaningful STEM experiences.”
With momentum from their strong Jamboree performance, the Drone Cougars are already planning their next steps.
“We’re preparing for the spring competition,” Mahilum said. “The students are excited to mentor peers and expand their skills into real-world applications.”
Both coaches encouraged new students to join the growing program.
“The Drone Cougars are always looking for curious, motivated students to join our team,” Mahilum said. “No experience required, just a passion for learning and a willingness to fly.”
