More Threats to Safety at Marjory Stoneman Douglas

There was more activity at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland on Tuesday after the Broward Sheriff’s Office was called for students carrying weapons, writing threatening posts on social media, and a deputy was suspended for sleeping on the job.

Students Carrying Weapons

At 7:30 a.m. after an argument in the cafeteria, student Jordan Saltzer, 18, reached into her bra and pulled out a two-inch black handle knife, unfolded it, and showed it to the other student. She was arrested and taken to the main jail.

In another unrelated incident, at 2:30 p.m., Vice Principal Denise Reed advised BSO of a student carrying a knife on the bus the day before. Upon removing Gavin Stricker, 16, from class, they found a nine-inch knife in his backpack. He was then transported to juvenile detention.

Threatening Post on Social Media

Around 10 a.m. a BSO deputy responded to the school to investigate a tip and interview a 10th grade student, about photos he shared on Snapchat. On one image, the teen displays a gun in his waistband. In a second image, he shows off bullets. The detective said both photos had threatening messages; one message was directed to a person named “Josh.”

BSO detectives found the suspect’s action to have interfered with school function and disturbed the peace. The teen subsequently was hospitalized under the Baker Act for being a threat to himself. Once medically cleared, he’ll be transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center. His name was not released.

BSO Deputy Suspended for Sleeping

Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputy. Moises Carotti was suspended with pay on Tuesday pending the outcome of an internal affairs investigation. A BSO sergeant patrolling the interior of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shortly after 5 p.m. on Monday was approached by a student and advised that Carotti was asleep in his patrol unit.

The sergeant responded to the marked patrol vehicle, which was parked on the northwest corner of the 1200 building. He knocked on the window to get Carotti’s attention, who appeared to be sleeping. The sergeant notified his command, and another deputy was sent to replace Carotti and cover the north perimeter of the 1200 building.
