City leaders are beginning to worry about losing property tax revenue and needing to make large budget cuts and reduce services residents rely on.
Governor Ron DeSantis has pledged to eliminate property taxes on primary homesteads, and legislation is being considered to reduce or eliminate those taxes. He also wants cities to reduce spending.
During the Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber of Commerce Wakeup Breakfast, Coconut Creek Mayor Jackie Railey spoke about the realities the city would face if it lost property taxes.
“We know residents would like to see less taxes, but if we lose property taxes, there will be major cuts to city services, or we will have to charge fees. The city could lose as much as 15 million dollars, and that would have a major effect on our city,” said Railey.
The city is planning a major educational effort to show residents how essential property taxes are to maintaining city services.
Mayor Scott Brook of Coral Springs also spoke on the importance of maintaining property taxes. He said that the city’s government and the services it provides, such as parks, roads, and quality-of-life programs, are funded by property taxes. Brook encouraged people to vote against ending property taxes.
Also, Robert Singal, M.D., an interventional cardiologist of Broward Health Physician Group, gave a presentation on the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle to avoid life-threatening heart problems.
Singal told the audience that heart disease is the number one killer of U.S. citizens every year and causes more deaths than cancer. He spoke strongly against smoking and encouraged any smokers to work on quitting. Singal also stressed the importance of regular exercise and healthy eating.
