The Monarch High School band program has reached exciting new heights, showcasing extraordinary talent and dedication.
The wind ensemble and the symphonic winds both earned straight superior ratings at a Music Performance Assessment (MPA) in early March at Dillard High School.
The wind ensemble, considered the top band, has about 35 students. In contrast, the symphonic winds, for up-and-coming musicians, has about 65 members, according to director of bands Jorge Fernandez.
The bands were evaluated in areas such as performance fundamentals, technical preparation, and musical effect. While Fernandez credited former band director Caleb Miller for preparing the current members, he also praised principal James Cecil and the band parents for providing extensive support.
“The students all worked very hard and put in a lot of practice time. I am incredibly proud of their dedication and looking to continue making music together next year,” said Fernandez.
Building on their recent success, the Monarch jazz band will next perform at the MPA for jazz bands at South Plantation High School on April 23 at 4 p.m.

On May 1, the wind ensemble will perform in Bailey Hall at Broward College in Davie during the South Region State Assessment for high school bands that have earned superior ratings at the county level. As Fernandez explained, “This is considered a high-level assessment for bands, and this will give our program some positive recognition.”
On May 7 at 6:30 p.m., the entire Monarch band program will perform at the Monarch High School auditorium at 5050 Wiles Road, Coconut Creek. The wind ensemble, symphonic winds, beginning band, jazz band, and color guard will perform. The choir will sing one song. “Our students have been achieving at a high level, and we will have a great concert,” said Fernandez.
