Coconut Creek leaders are ready to fight Broward County’s plan to allow the expansion of the Monarch Hill landfill.
While an actual lawsuit has not been filed, the Coconut Creek government has initiated a Chapter 164 Intergovernmental Dispute Proceeding. The city and representatives of Deerfield Beach who have joined in the proceeding have met with county staff as it is at the conflict assessment meeting stage. The next step would be a joint meeting with the Coconut Creek, Deerfield Beach, and Broward County commissions.
Vice Mayor Jackie Railey believes the Broward Commission was wrong to approve the expansion of Monarch Hill and has not done proper due diligence on the site, citing incomplete environmental tests. According to Railey, the water supply around the site is already compromised, and the expansion will mean even more contamination.
Commissioner John Brodie repeatedly said the city should sue the county to prevent landfill expansion. “Monarch Hill should be closed, and the garbage should be removed from Broward. I will fight the expansion,” he said.
The Coconut Creek commissioners and senior staff have said they are fully committed to preventing landfill expansion.
