Light up the night in Parkland {Zimmerman & Frachtman, P.A.}

The Parkland Chamber of Commerce and Zimmerman & Frachtman, P.A. are preparing to welcome thousands of families to its annual Light Up the Night holiday celebration on Thursday, Dec. 3, featuring family-friendly festivities, local businesses, and an opportunity to support a good cause.

The event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Shoppes of Parkland, 6991 N. State Road 7.

More than 3,000 attendees are expected.

“Light Up the Night is truly one of my favorite events of the year,” said Cindy Kaufman, Executive Director of the Parkland Chamber of Commerce.

“There’s something special about seeing thousands of families come together to celebrate the holiday season, spend time with friends and neighbors, and support our local businesses,” added Kaufman.

In addition to bringing the community together for the holidays, the celebration offers local businesses opportunities to showcase their products and services through sponsorships and vendor booths.

Vendor Village spaces are available for $175, with a discounted rate of $150 for Parkland Chamber members. Additional sponsorship opportunities are also available.

This year’s entertainment will include live music from Rock Candy Band. Light Up The Night will also feature a new second youth performance stage, showcasing talented young performers from the Westglades Middle School Band, Broadway Bound, and Dance Theatre. The expanded entertainment lineup will give families even more to enjoy throughout the evening while providing local youth with an opportunity to perform before the community.

Proceeds from Light Up the Night will benefit Nicklaus Children’s Health System and its mission to provide medical care for children.

“With Zimmerman & Frachtman, PA, we are proud to bring this wonderful event to our community,” said Kaufman. “ It’s a reminder of what makes Parkland such a special place.”

Vendor space is limited, and businesses are encouraged to register early. For sponsorship opportunities, vendor registration and event information, visit parklandchamber.org/lutn.

The Women’s Club of Coconut Creek will host its annual Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, Nov. 14, during the city’s Fall Harvest Festival at Sabal Pines Park.

Five local restaurants and food businesses will compete in the fundraiser, which will support student scholarships and teacher grants.

Participating businesses include Backa Yaad Cooking, Chef Secret, Papamigos, Texas Roadhouse and World of Beer Bar & Kitchen.

Festival attendees can sample chili from each competitor and vote for their favorite by purchasing a $20 tasting passport, which includes five chili samples, cornbread, water and a ballot.

Public tasting and voting will take place from 2:30 to 5 p.m. The winner will receive the Creek’s Choice Award.

Alexis Martinez, a culinary arts instructor at Atlantic Technical College and High School, will determine a separate Chef’s Choice Award.

“For us, the best recipe for a strong community starts with people coming together,” said Laura McDermott Matheric, president of the Women’s Club of Coconut Creek. “This cook-off gives neighbors a fun way to support local businesses while investing in students and teachers. We’re serving up a little friendly rivalry with a generous helping of purpose—and we hope everyone comes hungry!”

The cook-off will be held alongside the club’s annual Handicraft Market, a longtime feature of the city’s Fall Harvest Festival.

Proceeds from tasting passport sales will benefit the club’s scholarship and teacher grant fund.

During the 2025-26 club year, the organization awarded $5,000 in student scholarships and $2,200 in teacher grants. The club also paid off outstanding student lunch debt in Coconut Creek public schools.

Since its founding, the club has awarded $357,850 in scholarships to 472 Coconut Creek students pursuing college or trade education.

The event will take place on the west side of the field at Sabal Pines Park at 5005 NW 39th Ave.

Tasting passports can be purchased in advance at the event’s registration page. Cashless purchases will also be available at the festival while supplies last.

State Rep. Christine Hunschofsky.

From State Rep. Christine Hunschofsky:

The month of November and the anticipation of the holiday season can be exciting for many of us as we look forward to celebrating and spending time with loved ones. It’s a time of gratitude and hopefully some cooler weather. However, it is also a time when many of us reflect on our own personal challenges or deal with the loss of loved ones no longer with us. This holiday season, I wish all of you much love, thanksgiving, and happiness. If you can, please reach out to those you know who may be struggling; sometimes just checking in with others can be enough to make a difference. As a reminder, we also have 211-Broward.org and EaglesHaven.org that can help connect you with resources available in the community.

With the November general elections over, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you for the trust you have placed in me to serve as your state representative. My final two-year term in the Florida State House runs until November 2028, and I look forward to my role as Florida House Minority Leader and to championing the issues and policies most important to you.

This month, we will be in Tallahassee for Organization Session November 17-19 and Committee Week November 30-December 3. Please email me (HD095@flhouse.gov) any issues important to you that you feel the Legislature needs to address. This helps me very much when representing you in Tallahassee.

This Veterans Day, we come together to honor our veterans for their service to our great nation. While these brave men and women come from different backgrounds and life experiences, they are united by their devotion to our country, as well as their willingness to serve and put themselves in harm’s way to defend our freedoms. To all who served in our Armed Forces, we thank you, not just today but every day, for your service, patriotism, and sacrifice to protect our way of life here at home. The cities of Coconut Creek (coconutcreek.net), Margate (margatefl.com), Parkland (cityofparkland.org), and Coral Springs (coral springs.gov) are hosting Veterans Day events the morning of Monday, November 11, at their respective Veterans Parks.

One of my favorite events to kick off Thanksgiving is the Pre-Thanksgiving Interfaith Unity Service, held this year on Thursday, November 19, at 7:00 pm at First Church of Coral Springs, 8650 W. Sample Road, Coral Springs. Hosted by the Clergy Coalition of Coral Springs & Parkland, this beautiful interfaith service brings together houses of worship from across northwest Broward as we come together and give thanks for our blessings. I highly recommend attending if you haven’t before, and for those who do, there will be a canned food collection for those in need.

My office team, my family, and I wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving and hope you are surrounded by loved ones. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your state representative in Tallahassee. If you need assistance, please don’t hesitate to call us at 954-953-2760. To stay updated about our work in Tallahassee and in District 95, please subscribe to our weekly newsletter by emailing HD095@flhouse.gov with “subscribe” in the subject line. Also, follow me on Facebook at @RepChristineHunschofsky, X @RepHunschofsky, and Instagram @ChrisHunschofsky for regular updates. I look forward to hearing from you!

Mateo Sanchez kicks one of his four field goals for North Broward Prep. {Matt Rothman}

The North Broward Prep football team opened the postseason with a 38-6 win over Avon Park on Thursday night, highlighted by a record-setting performance from kicker Mateo Sanchez.

The Boston College commit, along with long snapper Aidan Field, set a school record for kicking points in a game as Sanchez converted four field goals and one extra point.

His first field goal came from 35 yards out to close the first half, giving the Eagles a 22-6 lead heading into halftime. Sanchez added three more field goals in the second half, including a season-long 52-yarder in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles opened the scoring on special teams when Thor Hwasta blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. The Red Devils responded with their only touchdown of the game to tie the score, but Christian Deering took over, scoring the next three touchdowns on the ground.

Sanchez converted an extra point following one of Deering’s touchdowns, while Jordan Tzadik also connected on his only extra-point attempt. North Broward Prep attempted two-point conversions following its other two touchdowns as the Eagles pulled away for the victory.

The Eagles improved to 5-6 this season and will face Somerset Academy in the quarterfinals on Friday, November 6, at 7 p.m. The Cougars won only two regular-season games but defeated Lake Placid High School 21-13 in their opening playoff game.

{South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association}

South Florida residents can explore the night sky at free telescope-viewing events hosted by the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association (SFAAA), including an upcoming celebration at Big Cypress National Preserve.

Coconut Creek resident Dr. John Warner, Ph.D., a member of SFAAA, is helping spread awareness of the organization’s free astronomy programs, which give residents of all ages opportunities to observe planets, stars and other celestial objects.

On Saturday, Nov. 7, Big Cypress National Preserve will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its International Dark Sky Park designation with astronomy activities at the Nathaniel P. Reed Visitor Center, 33100 Tamiami Trail East in Ochopee.

The free celebration will feature astronomy exhibits, presentations, demonstrations, telescopes and astrophotography displays from noon to 5:30 p.m., with participation from South Florida astronomy organizations.

At 6:30 p.m., the National Park Service will host an evening program farther down Seagrape Drive, followed by telescope viewing, weather permitting. Visitors are encouraged to bring chairs, insect repellent and red flashlights to preserve night vision.

Closer to home, SFAAA volunteers offer free public telescope viewing every Saturday evening, weather permitting, at Fox Observatory in Markham Park in Sunrise. The next scheduled viewing is Halloween, Oct. 31.

Warner, who participates in the organization’s outreach activities, uses a computerized telescope capable of automatically locating and tracking thousands of celestial objects. He also sets up his telescope in his driveway each Halloween, weather permitting, allowing neighborhood families to view Saturn and other celestial sights.

The organization also brings astronomy programs directly to schools, parks and neighborhoods throughout South Florida. Previous outreach locations include Fern Forest Nature Center and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Through these programs, volunteers hope to inspire an interest in astronomy, physics, mathematics and science, particularly among young people.

SFAAA encourages schools, community associations and civic organizations to arrange their own free astronomy evenings. Host locations need an open area with limited artificial lighting, convenient parking for telescope equipment and advance publicity.

The organization provides telescopes, equipment and volunteers at no cost.

For more information about upcoming observing opportunities or arranging a community astronomy event, visit SFAAA’s website.

Additional information about the Nov. 7 celebration is available through the National Park Service’s Big Cypress astronomy program.

Buffalo Bills linebacker Greg Rousseau returned to his hometown in Coconut Creek to deliver an inspiring speech to students sitting in the same seats at Monarch High School he once occupied while dreaming of playing in the NFL.

As part of his foundation’s efforts to give back, Rousseau spoke to the Monarch High School football team, answered questions and handed out cleats to players.

Rousseau spent two years at Monarch before graduating from Champagnat Catholic High School and continuing his football career at the University of Miami, where he earned Freshman All-American honors.

Everett Butler, Coconut Creek Football Team. {Matt Rothman}

The Coconut Creek High School football team captured its first District Championship since 2023 with a thrilling 27-24 victory over Piper High School, scoring the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter on Saturday night.

“I tell these guys all the time, we are battle-tested,” head coach Chris Yeargin said. “That’s a really good Piper team over there, and I commend them. Our defense stepped up when they needed to, and Josiah is one of the best South Florida quarterbacks that nobody ever talks about, along with Everett Butler. They will be talking soon.”

Coconut Creek opened the scoring with a rushing touchdown from Patrick Pierre Paul before Piper got on the board with a field goal from Nate Rodriguez.

Both teams recorded interceptions, including Piper picking off Coconut Creek in the red zone. The Bengals later capitalized on a forced fumble by Jeremiah Davis, with Jonah Julien returning it 55 yards for a touchdown to give Piper a 17-7 lead.

The Cougars responded with a rushing touchdown from Cayden Delions to cut the deficit to 17-14, but D’Tyler Marc extended Piper’s lead with a rushing touchdown.

Coconut Creek continued to battle back, with quarterback Josiah Sanchious connecting with Jaden Francis for a touchdown to make it a three-point game. Sanchious then found Everett Butler for the game-winning touchdown later in the fourth quarter before the Cougars’ defense came up with a fourth-down stop to seal the victory.

“Coconut Creek is one love,” Sanchious said. “I promise it’s all love. I love my big boys. I love my defense. We are a brotherhood, and we always stick together to the end.”

Coconut Creek improved to 8-1 this season and will close the regular season against Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School on Friday, October 30, at 7 p.m. The Lions enter the matchup with a 7-2 record and are ranked fifth in Florida and 20th nationally.

The Seed Coffee + Juice {Photos by Han Okcuoglu}

The Seed has been growing across South Florida since opening its first location in Boca Raton in 2014.

What started as a combination of specialty coffee and fresh-pressed juice has expanded into a multi-location business with shops throughout Broward and Palm Beach counties, including Boca Raton, Lighthouse Point, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Jupiter, Fort Lauderdale and now Coconut Creek.

The concept goes beyond coffee. The menu includes smoothies, açai bowls, salads, empanadas and a selection of baked goods, including their signature Bagel Bombs. They also rotate seasonal food and drink specials, which is always a good reason to stop by and see what they have going on.

We visited the Coconut Creek location to try a few things, and one item immediately made the entire trip worthwhile.

The Bagel Bomb of the Month ($7) is absolutely incredible. Go and don’t get anything else. I don’t care. You have to get it.

Bagel bomb of the Month.

October’s version is the Pralines & Cream Bagel Bomb, filled with sweet, caramelized pecans, rich caramel ribbons and smooth vanilla-caramel cream cheese. It is essentially a dessert disguised as a breakfast item, and I mean that in the best possible way. The nuts add a little crunch, the caramel brings buttery sweetness, and the cream cheese gives it a rich, creamy center.

Calling this a bagel is almost misleading. The exterior is fluffy and tender, with a buttery texture that puts it halfway between a traditional bagel and a croissant. It is indulgent without feeling like you’re just eating a ball of cream cheese wrapped in bread. The combination of textures and flavors is ridiculously good, and if this is what The Seed can do with its monthly specials, I would happily work my way through every single one.

Beef and Spinach and Cheese Empanadas.

We also tried one Spinach & Cheese Empanada and one Argentinean Beef Empanada ($5.55 each). The spinach version left a lot to be desired. It was fine, but it didn’t have enough flavor to be memorable.

The beef empanada, on the other hand, was outstanding. The filling was hearty, aromatic and almost reminiscent of a good picadillo, with the kind of savory seasoning that makes you want another bite before you’ve even finished the first. It was easily the better of the two.

Both came with the option to add their proprietary Paradise Honey Chipotle Sauce, and this stuff deserves attention of its own. It has a light chipotle smokiness, a touch of sweetness, and just enough heat to keep things interesting. It doesn’t overpower the filling, but it adds a little extra dimension to every bite. I became an immediate fan and ended up slathering it on practically everything we ate.

The Pesto Burrito ($8) is one of the better bang-for-your-buck items you’ll find at a coffee shop. The ingredients are simple: pesto, mozzarella, spinach and eggs. That’s it.

Pesto Burrito

There is nothing complicated about it, but the portion is gigantic, so those few ingredients need to do their job. Fortunately, the pesto brings a subtle, herbaceous flavor that works beautifully with the creamy mozzarella and leafy spinach, while the eggs make it a substantial breakfast. The same Paradise sauce comes on the side, and although it works well, I actually preferred eating the burrito without it. The pesto is delicate enough that you don’t want to drown it out with something as assertive as the chipotle sauce.

Blueberry Scone.

The Blueberry Scone ($5.25) was good, but not great. I was hoping for a little more moisture and a softer texture. It was drier than expected, and the blueberries didn’t deliver that burst of ripe, concentrated sweetness you want when you bite into a blueberry pastry. It wasn’t bad, but compared with the Bagel Bomb, it was a fairly forgettable baked good.

Now we have to talk about the interior.

The first thing we noticed was just how cold it was inside. I understand keeping a coffee shop comfortable in South Florida, but this felt like we had walked into a refrigerated room. The lighting also didn’t do the space any favors. It was harsh and clinical, closer to interrogation-room lighting than the warm, inviting atmosphere you’d hope for when sitting down with a coffee and something to eat.

An L-shaped row of couch seating runs along the wall, which should be a comfortable place to settle in for a while. Unfortunately, the cushions we saw were stained and looked rather dirty. Hopefully, that was a one-time issue left behind by a previous customer, because it detracted from the experience.

Thankfully, there are some redeeming features. A long row of artificial greenery, warm colors and outdoor seating help soften the space and give it a more relaxed feel. The overall design has potential, but the lighting, temperature and condition of the seating could use some attention.

Ultimately, The Seed is a place where the food can make a stronger impression than the atmosphere. The Pralines & Cream Bagel Bomb alone is worth seeking out; the beef empanada is excellent, and the Pesto Burrito delivers a generous breakfast at a very reasonable price. The Paradise sauce is another small detail that makes the food more memorable.

The experience inside wasn’t perfect, but there is enough to like on the menu that I would return. Just do yourself a favor and check out the monthly Bagel Bomb before it disappears. If October’s version is any indication, these seasonal creations may be the best reason to keep coming back.

S’mores and Pie. {Broward County Animal Care}

Two adorable pets with very different stories are hoping to find loving families at Broward County Animal Care, where adoption fees are waived for both animals.

Pie, a gentle 3-year-old dog, and S’mores, a friendly 1-year-old calico cat recovering from an injury, are among the animals waiting for a second chance at happiness.

Meet Pie

Pie (A2481037) is a 3-year-old American Staffordshire terrier mix weighing 25 pounds. Although she can be shy when meeting new people, shelter staff say she quickly warms up and reveals her affectionate personality.

The sweet-natured pup would likely thrive in a calm household where she can gradually build confidence and feel comfortable in her surroundings.

Pie is already spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped and has tested negative for heartworm. She is ready to go home with an adopter the same day.

Her adoption fee is waived, leaving only the required $25 pet registration fee.

Meet S’mores

S’mores (A2480918) is a 1-year-old domestic shorthair calico cat weighing just 5 pounds. Despite a difficult start, she has remained remarkably affectionate.

The young cat arrived at Broward County Animal Care in late September after being found injured as a stray. Veterinarians discovered a fracture in her left hind leg, and she also underwent a required 10-day quarantine after unintentionally scratching the person who found her.

Now that her quarantine is complete, S’mores is searching for a family willing to help her recover.

Shelter staff say she is already walking and putting weight on her injured leg, raising hopes that the fracture will heal without requiring amputation.

Her future adopter will need to provide cage rest while staff monitor her recovery.

Despite everything she has experienced, S’mores remains exceptionally friendly and loves attention. She enjoys being petted and even welcomes gentle belly rubs.

Once her leg has healed sufficiently and she is medically cleared for surgery, S’mores will be spayed, vaccinated and microchipped.

Her adoption fee will also be waived, with adopters responsible only for the $25 pet registration fee.

How to Adopt

Residents interested in adopting Pie, S’mores, or another animal can visit Broward County Animal Care, located at 2400 SW 42nd St. in Fort Lauderdale.

The shelter is open for adoptions seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Pup-or-Treat Halloween Pawty

Animal lovers will also have two opportunities to meet adoptable pets during upcoming community events.

On Saturday, Oct. 24, Broward County Animal Care will host its Pup-or-Treat Halloween Pawty from 6 to 8 p.m. at its Fort Lauderdale adoption center. Select adoptable dogs will be available to meet and adopt during the celebration.

On Sunday, Oct. 25, the agency will participate in an in-store adoption event at PetSmart, 4101 Oakwood Blvd. in Hollywood, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dogs and cats will be available for adoption.

Adoption fees are waived, and the required $25 pet registration fee applies. Pets are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before adoption, and dogs are tested for heartworm.

Residents can view available animals and learn more about the adoption process at Broward.org/Animal.

Chantal See. {Courtesy}

Monarch High School continues to add new faces to its athletic program, with Chantal See officially named the new girls’ varsity soccer coach.

For See, the opportunity fulfills a longtime dream of becoming a high school head coach. She hopes to build a program that emphasizes confidence, teamwork and personal growth while helping players develop both on and off the field.

“I want them to believe in themselves, find their confidence, learn how to handle adversity, and understand that they are capable of more than they sometimes realize,” See said.

Beyond winning games, See is focused on creating a positive culture where players feel supported and take pride in representing Monarch.

“For me, this is about building something special at Monarch—not just a soccer team, but a family and a culture where the girls feel supported, challenged, respected, and proud to be a Lady Knight,” See said.

See began playing soccer at a young age, competing in AYSO from ages 6 to 10 before moving on to West Kendall, Hammocks Lightning and Miami Sunset High School. She got a scholarship to play at Spartanburg Methodist College, played a year and a half there and then transferred over to Tuscalooma College in Tennessee.

Her coaching career began with Elite Soccer in Miami, where she worked with children from 2½ years old through fifth grade. After moving to Boca Raton, she coached with GPYSA, serving as head coach of the U16 and U19 teams while also providing private training.

Most recently, See has coached with Parkland Travel Soccer, leading the 2013 and 2016 Premier Girls teams. She has also worked as an assistant coach with the 2012 boys team and a 2024 ECNL boys team, gaining experience across multiple age groups and competitive levels.

See plans to emphasize commitment, attitude, effort and consistency as she takes over the program. She hopes to build a team that supports one another, communicates effectively and learns from adversity while developing confidence and discipline both on and off the field.

“My philosophy is simple: Commit to the process. Trust your team. Compete every day,” See said.

The Knights are coming off a season in which they went 8-10-1 and will begin the new year against Ponoma High School on Nov.4

Michel Hernandez and Osniel Reybel Arriola Pacheco {BSO}

Two Miami Gardens men are accused in a Coconut Creek Walmart theft involving fake receipts allegedly created using Google Gemini.

According to a Coconut Creek Police Department arrest report, Osniel Reybel Arriola Pacheco, 26, and Michel Hernandez, 46, were identified in an arrest affidavit detailing the October 18 incident at Walmart at 5571 West Hillsboro Boulevard.

According to the report, officers responded to a retail theft in progress involving two people using fraudulent Walmart receipts. An officer reviewing live surveillance reported seeing Arriola Pacheco and Hernandez working together to obtain merchandise.

Police said Hernandez collected two coffee makers, placed them in a shopping cart, and transferred the merchandise to Arriola Pacheco. Arriola Pacheco then carried the coffee makers and a laptop computer, valued at approximately $1,297 combined, beyond all points of sale and toward the exit without paying.

Hernandez allegedly left the store approximately one minute before Arriola Pacheco and walked toward a vehicle the two men were using.

According to the affidavit, when two uniformed officers approached Arriola Pacheco outside the store, he ran and ignored an officer’s command to stop. An officer caught up with him, grabbed him around the torso, and used a leg sweep to bring him to the ground.

During a search following the arrest, an officer reported finding two clear plastic baggies inside a white paper key bag in Arriola Pacheco’s left pocket. The baggies contained approximately 2.6 grams of a crystal-like substance that field-tested positive for fentanyl, according to police.

After being detained, Arriola Pacheco agreed to speak with officers and admitted he intended to steal the merchandise, the affidavit states.

Police said he also explained that he used Google Gemini to create fictitious Walmart receipts, directing the artificial intelligence application to generate or modify transaction information to make unpaid merchandise appear legitimately purchased.

According to the affidavit, Arriola Pacheco voluntarily showed officers the application on his cellphone. An officer reported seeing multiple prompts about creating and modifying Walmart receipts, including one dated October 18.

Both Arriola Pacheco and Hernandez were arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.

Jaiden García. {Courtesy}

Coconut Creek native Jaiden Garcia has officially committed to Chattahoochee Valley Community College to continue his baseball career.

“It is a dream come true,” Garcia said. “Knowing that all the hard work and countless hours of training when no one was watching has finally paid off. I’m looking forward to continuing the hard work and reaching even higher levels.”

Garcia’s baseball journey began at four years old with Coconut Creek Little League, where he played for four years before moving into travel baseball. He competed with the Coconut Creek-based Broward Blizzards from 8U through 13U before joining the South Florida Scorpions for his 14U, 15U and 16U seasons.

He later played for the Next Level Scout Team at 17U while attending Westminster Academy. Garcia chose Westminster for high school baseball because his home school, Coconut Creek High School, has no baseball program.

Garcia has impressed during his time with the Lions, playing two years of varsity baseball while hitting .361 with 31 RBIs and 32 runs scored.

When it came time to choose a college, Garcia felt Chattahoochee Valley offered him the best opportunity to compete immediately and continue developing at the next level.

“I also felt wanted by the coaches as they offered a full scholarship,” Garcia said. “They are also helping me reach my dreams.”

With one more varsity season remaining, Garcia will eventually join a Chattahoochee Valley program that went 30-27 last season and has produced several MLB Draft picks, including four-time MLB All-Star Tim Hudson.

Steven Thomas Gale {BSO}

A Coconut Creek man faces felony charges after allegedly surprising his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend in bed while armed with a two-foot wrench.

According to Coconut Creek Police Department arrest records, Steven Thomas Gale, 22, faces two counts of burglary with assault or battery following the October 6 incident.

Records show officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress at an apartment shortly before midnight. Investigators determined that Gale went to the residence after learning his former girlfriend was spending the night with another man.

According to the affidavit, Gale contacted the woman’s brother before arriving and asked him to leave the apartment’s front door open so he could speak with her. The brother unlocked the door before going to take a shower.

Before entering, Gale allegedly retrieved a metal lug wrench approximately 24 inches long from his vehicle.

Police said Gale entered the apartment through the unlocked front door and walked toward his ex-girlfriend’s closed bedroom, where she and her current boyfriend were lying in bed, unaware he had entered.

Gale allegedly opened the bedroom door, entered while holding the wrench in his right hand, and shouted, “Yo.”

Investigators said Gale then raised the wrench above his head in a threatening position and ordered the boyfriend to get out of bed and fight him.

Fearing he was about to be attacked, the boyfriend got out of bed and confronted Gale, repeatedly telling him to leave the apartment.

Instead of leaving, Gale allegedly retreated into the living room, raised the wrench over his head again, and challenged the boyfriend to fight.

The boyfriend told police he began physically pushing Gale toward the apartment’s exit. Once the confrontation moved into the building’s breezeway, Gale allegedly began swinging his arms at the man.

According to the affidavit, Gale struck the boyfriend in the chest, right arm, and shoulder, leaving visible lacerations. The boyfriend responded by pushing and punching Gale until the altercation ended.

The woman told investigators that she and Gale had ended their relationship two months earlier. She said Gale had no belongings remaining at the apartment and no reason to be there.

Police said Gale acknowledged he had “messed up” by going to the apartment and admitted he retrieved the wrench from his vehicle.

He also told investigators that he “should have controlled his emotions” and should never have gone to the apartment.

Gale was arrested by and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.

Coconut Creek police are warning residents about a jury duty scam after a local woman lost several hundred dollars to a caller posing as a law enforcement officer.

According to police, the caller told the woman she had missed jury duty and faced arrest unless she paid a fine. He instructed her to deposit money into a Bitcoin machine, which she did before realizing she had been scammed.

Police said officers would never threaten arrest over the phone or direct someone to a Bitcoin machine to pay a fine.

Anyone receiving a similar call should hang up, police advised.

Monarch High School has officially introduced Mitch Rodriguez as its new varsity baseball coach.

“It feels great, Rodriguez said. “I was born and raised in Coral Springs and have lived in Coconut Creek for many years, so to be able to make an impact in the community that I’ve called home for a while now is an honor to me,”

Baseball has been a major part of Rodriguez’s life since he began playing at age four. He pitched at Dean College in Massachusetts, where his team won a District Championship and was ranked among the top 25 nationally in NJCAA Division II.

Rodriguez later spent a year coaching at Lynn University and has also coached at Highlands Christian Academy and, most recently, Piper High School. He brings nearly a decade of travel baseball coaching experience to Monarch.

“I’m just glad to have this opportunity to make an impact on future generations on a different stage,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez is also a third-generation public servant and has followed in his family’s footsteps by finding his own way to positively impact the community. He is set to take over a program that has routinely made playoff appearances but is coming off a season in which the Knights won only four games.

{Axon Air Skydio drones}

Coconut Creek police used a drone to locate a suspect in a stolen U-Haul truck investigation on Oct. 1, marking the first time the department used a drone to help make an arrest.

Officers responded to the Club Caribe apartment complex at 11:39 a.m. after neighbors reported three young people sleeping in a U-Haul truck in the parking lot, according to the Coconut Creek Police Department. Investigators determined the truck had been stolen.

Police arrested Malakai Sturrup, 18, of Margate, and a 17-year-old girl. A 17-year-old boy hid from officers until an officer used a drone to locate him, police said. He surrendered without incident.

Sturrup and the boy were charged with stealing the truck. The girl was charged with trespassing.

Police took Sturrup to the Broward County Jail. Authorities took the two juveniles to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

Maximo Viani Otoni {BSO}

A Coconut Creek man is accused of stealing more than $17,000 worth of high-end sports cards, including cards featuring Messi, Caitlin Clark, and Cooper Flagg.

According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, Maximo Viani Otoni, 22, was arrested on October 1 and charged with grand theft after an investigation into crimes he allegedly committed while working for VIP Rips, a Deerfield Beach company that sells and handles sports memorabilia and trading cards.

The investigation began after a collector requested expedited shipping for a Cooper Flagg card valued at approximately $3,500, according to the arrest report.

When employees could not locate the card, they traced the last person to handle it to Otoni. Surveillance footage from a camera positioned above his workstation allegedly showed Otoni sitting at his desk with the Cooper Flagg card beneath him before moving away, after which the card could no longer be seen.

An employee confronted Otoni about the missing card, and authorities said he admitted taking it and leaving it in his mailbox. The card was later recovered.

According to investigators, Otoni then disclosed that he had three additional VIP Rips cards at his Coconut Creek home: a Lionel Messi card valued at approximately $2,200, another Messi card valued at about $70, and an ungraded Neymar and Ronaldo autographed card estimated to be worth between $1,500 and $2,000.

Deputies later went to Otoni’s home, where authorities said he confessed and gave investigators permission to recover additional cards from his bedroom.

Six more cards belonging to VIP Rips were found, authorities said, including a Trevor Lawrence card valued at $1,900, an Anthony Edwards card worth $1,500, a Caitlin Clark autographed card worth $1,500, another Cooper Flagg card worth $2,200, a Dirk Nowitzki card valued at $2,300, and an autographed Raphinha card worth approximately $50.

Investigators estimated the combined value of the recovered cards at approximately $16,720 and $17,220.

Otoni was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.

Coconut Creek Fire Rescue Captain Johann Rose remembers when the city broke away from Margate to form its own fire department in 2021.

“It took a lot of work, and while most of our firefighters came from the Margate-Coconut Creek department, we brought in firefighters from other cities in Broward and other parts of Florida. We have a diverse, highly skilled fire department. For the past five years, we have been working hard to build our organization and to make sure our fire rescue is exceptional,” said Rose, who serves at Station 113.

Community Paramedic Mindy Lirette remembers the split from Margate as challenging. “It was a lot of work, but it was good work. We had to build a new department, learn to work together, and establish a new department,” she said.

Commissioner Joshua Rydell participated in the decision to split from Margate. “It was a smart decision to bring fire rescue in-house, and now we have a great department and fiscal control over it,” he said.

The new department benefited Coconut Creek by giving the city control and better service, according to former mayor and commissioner Becky Tooley. “It was a good decision, and we have better response times,” she said.

To celebrate the department’s fifth anniversary, they held a party and open house on October 3 at Station 50.

The event featured a live vehicle extrication and a bounce house, and children could operate a real fire hose. Families toured a fire rescue vehicle. People could see public safety K9 units, and pizza and other refreshments were available. A dunk tank was available for city leaders, and Mayor Jeffrey Wasserman was the first person dunked.

Chief Michael Rodriguez, who took over in June 2026, was pleased to see a large crowd at the party. “I am glad so many people came today, and I think we have a great fire department. There is always room to improve, and we are always working to become better.”

Monarch High School Theatre Department {David Volz}

Imagine a community where the leadership decides to charge a fee for people to use the bathroom.

This is the setting for the musical satire Urinetown that the Monarch High School Theatre Department will perform on October 15-17. The musical shows a future where a drought has caused a water shortage in a large city and all private toilets have been banned. People must use public pay toilets managed by a large company that controls all bathrooms or face severe consequences. Poor residents struggle to pay large toilet fees and eventually there is a rebellion, according to Tatiana Ahlbum, director.

“This is a satire of a society in the future where a company has a monopoly on the water and there is a conflict between the rich and poor. It is a high-energy musical, and it pokes fun at capitalism, bureaucracy, and social irresponsibility,” said Ahlbum.

The Monarch Theatre students are running the entire show. Team members have designed and built the complete set, programmed all the stage lighting, made all the costumes, directed the musical score, created original choreography, designed the sound and props, conducted research on the musical, and developed a marketing campaign, according to Ahlbum.

The theatre will submit their presentation of Urinetown for consideration to perform on the Mainstage at the Florida State Thespian Festival. Earning a Mainstage slot at the state festival represents the highest level of high school theatre achievement in Florida, like winning a state sports championship.

If the musical is selected, the students will be the first in Monarch’s history to perform at the state festival, according to Ahlbum.

“The kids have really been working hard, and they feel really passionate about the opportunity to perform at the state level. I think there is a chance their hard work will pay off. They will be evaluated by judges who are theatre professionals in areas such as innovation, overall quality, and appropriateness to the festival,” said Ahlbum.

The theatre students are in rehearsal and looking forward to performing. Matteo Galindo, who plays Mr. Cladwell, the owner of the bathroom monopoly, said, “Preparing to perform this musical is really fun, and I love the process.”

Moriah Wilkes, who plays Hope Cladwell, the daughter of Mr. Cladwell, said, “I really enjoy being a part of the theatre and we are having fun rehearsing for this musical.”

Urinetown will be performed on October 15 and 16 at 6:30 p.m. and October 17 at 1:00 p.m. at the Monarch High School Auditorium at 5050 Wiles Road, Coconut Creek. General admission tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at monarchtheatredept.ludus.com. Seating is limited and community members are encouraged to purchase their tickets early, according to Ahlbum.

Kody Thompson carries the ball up the middle for Coconut Creek against Monarch. {Matt Rothman}

One of the most anticipated games of the high school football season took place Friday night, with Coconut Creek High School knocking off rival Monarch High School 36-4 in the Mayor’s Cup.

In the first regular-season meeting between the two teams since 2020, the Cougars prevailed for the 10th time in 16 matchups behind a dominant second half, outscoring the Knights 25-0.

“It’s always a tough game, but we always get up for it,” Head Coach Chris Yeargin said. “Coach Calvin Davis has a really good program over there, but what we’re building at Coconut Creek is special, and I want the city to know that.”

Coconut Creek struck first when Josiah Sanchius connected with Everett Butler for the opening touchdown. Monarch quickly answered on a touchdown pass from Jeremiah Milicent to Bryan Bynes.

Jonathan Hernandez made the first of his three field goals to put Coconut Creek back in front, but Monarch regained the lead on a touchdown from Keshawn Paschall. Hernandez added another field goal before halftime to keep the Cougars within striking distance.

Coconut Creek took over in the second half. Butler caught his second touchdown pass from Sanchius before Kody Thompson scored a touchdown to extend the lead to 12.

Butler later moved to quarterback and connected with Jaden Francis for a long touchdown following an interception from Kitray Ross-Mullen. The Cougars added another Hernandez field goal and a safety to complete the 24-point victory.

Coconut Creek improved to 5-1 and will play Charles W. Flanagan High School on Friday, October 9, at 7 p.m. The Falcons are 1-5, with their lone victory coming against Boyd H. Anderson High School. Monarch dropped to 3-3 and will face Olympic Heights Community High School on Friday, October 9, at 7 p.m. The Lions are 2-3 this season after finishing 5-5 last year.
