During the May 28 meeting, the commission read a proclamation supporting the fight against bladder cancer.

This proclamation was particularly meaningful because Vice Mayor John Brodie is currently battling bladder cancer, while John Railey, the husband of Commissioner Jackie Railey, is a survivor.

Both spoke passionately about the need for people to get checked for the disease, highlighting the personal impact within local leadership.

Commissioner Joshua Rydell read statistics from the proclamation, noting that bladder cancer is the seventh most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, with 85,000 new diagnoses and 18,000 deaths annually. These numbers, he emphasized, seriously impact families.

“This proclamation means a lot to me, and I want to bring awareness to the community because too many men wait until it is too late,” said Brodie.

Brodie has an aggressive form of bladder cancer that is now in the maintenance phase of treatment, and he assured the audience, “I am continuing to fight this cancer.”

Papamigos has been sitting in my backyard all these years as I’ve watched them go from a simple taco food truck to a full-blown gastropub.

They’ve been consistently great since 2021, and that shows since they’re one of the few restaurants to survive the turnover in the Regency Lakes Village Center plaza all these years. Except for the day I came to review them.

There is actually a fairly interesting story behind Papamigos because it is not trying to be a traditional Mexican restaurant, sushi bar, or seafood restaurant. The concept was built around what the owners call a “Mexi-Crasian” fusion, blending Mexican, Asian, and South Florida coastal influences into a single menu.

That explains why you’ll find birria tacos sitting next to sushi rolls, poke bowls, ceviche, oysters, and seafood dishes.

This location is tucked away in the corner of the plaza, and, like many a gastropub, it has TVs showing sports, metal chairs, a bar, and occasionally live music on its limited patio on weekends.

We went for the Dip Trio ($18) and opted for Guacamole, Mango Salsa, and Hot Queso. The guacamole was fresh and citrusy. They don’t skimp on the cilantro either, which I love.

The Mango Salsa was growing on us as we ate. We were expecting a wetter texture; we would have preferred it if they had mildly blended the mangoes instead of chopping them rough. It eats more as a garnish than a salsa. But the flavors are there, and they are fantastic. Another burst of cilantro on top. The Hot Queso needs no notes. It’s perfect.

Dip Trio

We came for Sunday brunch, and in addition to their regular menu, they had a special brunch menu with 5 unique items, $1.50 oyster and drink specials.

Gordito Sangwich

Then we ran into disaster. For the first time in years of going there, I tried the intentionally misspelled Gordito Sangwich ($17). It was supposed to be tender carne asada, blanketed in mozzarella and authentic Mexican cheese, accompanied by pico de gallo, an egg cooked over easy, and a zesty verde sauce, sliced avocado, and smoky Chipotle mayo. Sounds great, right?

The problem is someone did not clean the grill that morning, and all dishes with carne asade were basically infected with the taste of chalky asphalt. This overpowering bitterness seeped into the sandwich and the blackened grill marks on the eggs. It was bad.

Carne Asada Quesadillas

Even my wife’s carne asada quesadilla ($16) was an unlucky victim. The portion is normally huge, filling (and delicious), with 4 giant quesadilla wedges. But something was off this Sunday. The cheese-to-meat ratio was severely unbalanced, and it became a bloated mess.

We’ll chalk this up to a bad cook day because normally things are excellent.

Spicy Tuna Taco

Thankfully, the rest of the meal was saved once the staff replaced those items. The spicy sushi tacos ($13) are one of the more unique items on the menu. Spicy tuna, jalapeno, avocado, cucumber, rice, spicy mayo, eel sauce, Sriracha, with sesame seeds and masago sprinkled on top of the rice “shell”. Delicious.

Despite the first couple of items I reviewed having no spice level, most of the menu is really spicy, like this taco. Prepare accordingly. We went back for their tried-and-true Lala’s Street Corn ($14). Roasted corn, sour cream slathered, queso fresco, topped with tajin, Chipotle mayo, Sriracha again, and fresh cilantro. Highly spicy but excellent as usual.

Despite the hiccups that day, the years that my friends and many other happy patrons have spent eating here and gushing about the food should outweigh the risk of an occasional kitchen misstep.

Papamigos isn’t trying to be the most authentic Mexican restaurant in South Florida. Instead, it embraces a distinctly South Florida identity, where birria tacos, sushi rolls, ceviche, oysters, and margaritas coexist on the same menu without apology. And they’re definitely not apologizing for the spice levels either.

Milo and Quill {Broward County Animal Care}

Two lovable pets at Broward County Animal Care are hoping to find their forever families, and shelter staff says both have plenty of affection to give.

Five-year-old Milo, a 71-pound American Bulldog mix, has been waiting for a home since arriving at the shelter as a stray last November.

When he was found, Milo was in poor condition, suffering from fleas, an ear infection, irritated skin, a heart murmur, and hip dysplasia. After receiving treatment and care, Milo has made a remarkable recovery. His skin and ears have healed, and he now enjoys playing and exploring like any happy dog.

Milo has also become a favorite among participants in Broward County Animal Care’s Broward Buddies program, where community members take shelter dogs on day trips and outings. Those who have spent time with him frequently describe him as sweet, calm and well-behaved.

According to shelter staff, Milo knows how to sit on command, especially when treats are involved. He is also comfortable around children and other dogs and enjoys playing with canine companions his own size.

Milo is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and can go home the same day he is adopted. His adoption requires only the $25 Broward County pet registration fee.

Cat lovers may want to meet Quill, a 6-year-old tuxedo cat with a friendly personality and a love for cuddles.

The 8-pound domestic shorthair is known for climbing into laps and soaking up attention from visitors. Quill also enjoys climbing and perching in high places, making a cat tree a perfect addition to his future home.

Shelter staff says Quill gets along well with his feline roommates and could do well with another cat, provided proper introductions are made.

Quill is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. His adoption fee has been waived, leaving adopters responsible only for the $25 Broward County pet registration fee.

Milo, Quill and many other adoptable pets are available at Broward County Animal Care, located at 2400 SW 42nd St. in Fort Lauderdale. The shelter is open daily for adoptions from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Coconut Creek’s new fire chief, Michael Rodriguez {City of Coconut Creek}

Coconut Creek has a new fire chief.

Michael M. Rodriguez has been promoted to chief of the city’s Fire Rescue. He previously served as deputy fire chief, a position he took in September 2024.

“I feel good about this organization, and I am very happy about where I am professionally,” said Rodriguez. “The fire rescue department will hit its five-year anniversary, and I am excited about the opportunity to help it grow.”

Rodriguez said former Chief Brian Blizzard set a good foundation with his leadership. “I will take it day by day and keep moving forward,” he said. “We have an outstanding team with the best men and women in the business. This makes our administrative jobs easier. I appreciate the trust the city manager and city officials have placed in me to serve this fine organization,” said Rodriguez.

As deputy fire chief, Rodriguez oversaw daily operations, guided strategic initiatives, and supported the department’s continued growth. Previously, he served as the EMS division chief for the Seminole Tribe Fire Rescue. Rodriguez had a 20-year career with Delray Beach Fire Rescue, during which he served as an EMS captain, division chief of fire and life safety, and assistant chief of administration.

Rodriguez has also worked as an emergency room and trauma nurse and as a patient care manager. He has served as an EMS and nursing instructor. Rodriguez holds dual bachelor’s degrees in health sciences and nursing. He also has a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership, according to Rodriguez.

He has been married to his wife, Nadine, for over 26 years. They have two children: Gianni, 25, a graduate of the University of South Florida with a bachelor’s degree in information technology, and Mia, 22, a graduate of Florida Atlantic University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, according to Rodriguez.

The High School football teams in Coconut Creek are preparing for the new season and were in action this spring.

Monarch High School defeated Dr. Joaquin Garcia High School 22-0 and Jupiter High School 18-0 in a half against each school. Keshawn Paschall rushed for 120 yards and scored two touchdowns, while Jeremiah Milcent threw three touchdown passes. Bryan Bynes hauled in two touchdown catches and finished with 150 receiving yards. Darren Jeudy added two receptions for 40 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Jeudy also recorded four tackles, including two tackles for loss.

Monarch has won the last four district championships and finished 7-5 last season. The Knights also earned a 39-0 victory over Doral Academy and had more than a dozen players sign to continue their careers at the collegiate level. The Knights will face another challenging schedule this season, beginning with a game against Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School on August 20.

The Knights will then host Miramar High School the following week and will also play at home against Piper, Deerfield Beach, Olympic Heights, and Charles W. Flanagan High School. Their first road game will be against Cardinal Gibbons High School, and they will also travel to Coconut Creek, St. Thomas Aquinas, and West Boca Raton High School. 

Coconut Creek enters the season as the defending district champion after posting an 8-2 regular-season record in 2025. The Cougars also recently wrapped up their spring schedule, highlighted by the program’s annual Garnet and Red intersquad scrimmage. Last season, Coconut Creek opened the playoffs with a 49-20 victory over Mater Academy Charter before falling to perennial powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas High School 45-13 in the regional round.

The Cougars will begin the 2026 season in the National Football Showcase when they travel to face Cypress Bay High School on August 14. Coconut Creek’s home schedule includes games against Plantation, True North Classical Academy, Monarch, Archbishop McCarthy, Piper and Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory. Their road schedule will feature contests against Dillard, Cardinal Gibbons, Boyd H. Anderson and Charles W. Flanagan High School.

North Broward Prep is also looking to build on last season, finishing 5-6. The Eagles concluded their spring season with a matchup against Somerset Academy Charter and will open the regular season at home against University School. NBP’s home slate also includes games against Coral Glades, Pembroke Pines Charter, St. Andrew’s, Coral Springs Charter and Pine Crest. The Eagles will hit the road to face Cooper City, Westminster Academy, Gulliver Prep and Calvary Christian.

Seton Ridge Children’s Center is now enrolling for the 2026-2027 school year, offering a play-based, faith-focused preschool program for children ages 18 months through VPK.

Operating as a ministry of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Seton Ridge Children’s Center, located at 1401 Coral Ridge Drive, has served the community for 36 years, welcoming children from 18 months through VPK in a family-oriented setting focused on curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning.

Located in Coral Springs, the preschool offers programs for young twos, threes, and VPK students, with flexible scheduling options including three-, four-, or five-day programs. They are a part-time program with their main hours from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm or 1:00 pm.

“At Seton Ridge Children’s Center, we fundamentally believe that children are entitled to a childhood that is rich in wonder and discovery,” Maria D’Attile, Director of Seton Ridge, said, adding,  “These early childhood years are when children absorb the world through every experience around them. We want them to explore, investigate, create, and truly enjoy learning.”

Unlike highly structured academic environments for young children, Seton Ridge focuses on developmentally appropriate, child-centered learning, where play serves as the foundation for future success in reading, math, science, language, and social development.

“Our curriculum is hands-on and open-ended because in early childhood, experience is the teacher,” D’Attile said. “Children learn by pouring, building, singing, dancing, imagining, experimenting, and even getting messy. That process is where meaningful learning happens.”

The school follows Florida VPK standards using the Creative Curriculum, and all teachers are certified in early childhood education and trained in CPR. Each classroom includes both a lead teacher and an assistant teacher to support individualized attention and care.

Programs at Seton Ridge incorporate science, art, literacy, music, motor skills, imagination, and social development through interactive activities designed to build independence and confidence.

“We support the development of the whole child,” D’Attile said. “Children need opportunities to take safe risks, solve problems, learn responsibility, and discover the power of communication. Those experiences help create lifelong learners.”

Faith also plays an important role in the school’s culture. Children participate in daily prayers while older preschool classes visit the chapel for age-appropriate talks focused on kindness, compassion, and love.

“We believe children learn best by what they see lived out before them,” D’Attile said. “A loving way of life is what we strive for our children to experience every day.”

One of the school’s most distinctive features is its Imagination Room, where students engage in creative exploration that encourages storytelling, pretend play, and discovery.

Registration is now open for the 2026-2027 school year. The school follows the Broward County School Calendar and offers early drop-off beginning at 8:00 a.m. as well as Stay & Play extended care until 2:00 p.m.

The City of Coconut Creek will honor Juneteenth with an evening of live entertainment, cultural tributes, and community activities during its annual Freedom Day Celebration on Saturday, June 20.

The free event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the City Hall Courtyard, located at 4800 W. Copans Road. Residents and visitors of all ages are invited to attend as the city commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates African American history, culture, and achievements.

This year’s celebration will feature live music by The Motown Experience, a tribute act that recreates the iconic sounds, harmonies, and choreography of Motown’s greatest artists.

Attendees will also enjoy high-energy step performances by Rise with Greatness, thought-provoking poetry from a spoken word artist, and a lively trivia contest hosted by an emcee, complete with prizes and giveaways.

The first 100 guests will have the opportunity to design and create their own custom Juneteenth T-shirt.

Food and beverage vendors will be on site throughout the evening, offering a variety of refreshments.

Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and coolers to enjoy the outdoor festivities. Pets will not be permitted at the event.

Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Coconut Creek residents will see their water bills increase beginning June 1.

The city implemented a 3.4 percent adjustment to water and wastewater rates to align with the Broward County wholesale rate increase that took effect in October 2025. According to city information, this adjustment is necessary to cover higher county costs, support system maintenance, fund infrastructure improvements, and comply with regulatory requirements.

Coconut Creek does not operate its own water or wastewater treatment plants. It contracts with the county to purchase water at a reduced sale-for-resale rate and to provide wastewater treatment services. The city is responsible for maintaining and upgrading the local water and wastewater infrastructure that serves residents, including storage tanks, booster stations, water lines, fire hydrants, and valves, according to city information.

Additionally, a major portion of the city’s annual utility costs involves purchasing water from the county, wastewater treatment services, and the maintenance and improvement of local infrastructure.

Broward County sets wholesale water and wastewater rates that help fund the operation, maintenance, and long-term investments needed for regional treatment facilities, according to city information.

Continue to do your best, follow your interests, and learn from your experiences. Each day is a new opportunity!

Father’s Day is Sunday, June 21. Thank you so much to all the dads out there for all you do for your families and for our community. We are very fortunate to have so many fathers in our community who are always willing to lend a helping hand. We appreciate you and all you do to make a difference! Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery by recognizing June 19, 1865, the day that Union Army Major General Gordon Granger told the slaves in Galveston, Texas, of their emancipation. This occurred more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. The City of Coconut Creek’s Juneteenth Celebration, featuring a free concert, will be on Saturday, June 20, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the City Hall Courtyard, 4800 West Copans Road. The City of Coral Springs is hosting a Juneteenth Celebration on Friday, June 19, 2026, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts, 2855 Coral Springs Drive.

Tradewinds Park {Google Maps}

Construction crews will soon begin major improvements along Sample Road for Coconut Creek residents.

During the May 28 meeting, the commission passed a resolution for an agreement between the city and NAYSAC Corp for the construction of the Sample Road Improvements Project. The contract value is $965,281.

The project is being funded through the Broward County Penny for Transportation Surtax Mobility Advancement Program, which awarded the city a grant for its design and construction, according to city information.

The work includes enhancing accessibility to Tradewinds Park and installing crosswalks, three bus shelters, and other transit-related amenities. The project will take place on Sample Road from Lyons Road to the entrance of Tradewinds Park, according to city information.

The city and Broward County entered an Interlocal Agreement (ILA) in October 2025 to secure grant funding for the project’s construction. Previously, in 2024, the city completed the design phase and obtained all necessary permits from the Florida Department of Transportation. With these steps finished, the city is now ready to begin construction.

According to city information, the construction start date will be announced soon, and the project is expected to proceed shortly thereafter.

A witness called 911 after discovering a 5-year-old girl alone, crying, and banging on the windows of a locked vehicle outside of a restaurant.

According to Coconut Creek Police, Jean Richard Adoux, 23, of Lauderdale Lakes, was acting as a caregiver for the child with her parents’ knowledge when the incident occurred on May 27 near the 4100 block of West Hillsborough Boulevard, outside La Brasa Grill.

Investigators said a witness parked next to a Kia and noticed the young girl sitting alone inside the vehicle. After entering the restaurant to order food and returning approximately 20 minutes later, the witness reportedly found the child crying and banging on the window and immediately called 911. Records show how Adoux came out, opened the car door, and took the child out.

According to an arrest report, officers reviewed surveillance video from inside the restaurant that allegedly showed Adoux speaking with the manager for about 15 minutes before sitting at a table with the manager for another 35 minutes. Police said the child remained alone in the vehicle for approximately 50 minutes while temperatures outside reached 85 degrees.

An investigating officer noted in the report that the vehicle was turned off with all windows rolled up, creating conditions that could have resulted in severe injury or death of the child.

Authorities said the girl, who is related to Adoux, did not appear to suffer any obvious injuries.

Adoux was arrested and charged with child neglect without great bodily harm and leaving a child unattended in a vehicle for more than 15 minutes.

According to Broward County jail records, he was transported to the Broward County Main Jail and is being held on a $10,000 bond.

The Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber of Commerce will host its annual State Legislative Luncheon on June 4, giving local business and community leaders an opportunity to hear directly from state lawmakers about key outcomes from the 2026 Florida Legislative Session.

The luncheon will take place on Tuesday, June 4, at 11:30 a.m. at the Coral Springs Museum of Art, located at 2855A Coral Springs Drive.

According to the chamber, this year’s legislative session included major policy discussions and decisions expected to affect businesses and communities throughout Florida, including issues involving property taxes, congressional redistricting, housing, infrastructure, permitting, workforce development, and economic growth.

Featured panelists include State Senator Tina Polsky and State Representatives Chip LaMarca, Christine Hunschofsky, and Dan Daley. The discussion will be moderated by Bernie Moyle.

Organizers said attendees will gain insight into the impact of recent legislative decisions, including proposed property tax changes, and learn about lawmakers’ priorities and future initiatives.

The event is open to the public, but registration is required due to limited seating.

Oak Trails Park. {City of Coconut Creek}

Coconut Creek is set to benefit from an expanded and improved park.

During the May 28 meeting, the commission passed a resolution to approve an agreement with Sagaris Corporation for the Oak Trails Park expansion project for a contract of $2,890,000.

The improvements will include two multi-purpose fields for athletics and passive use, and an outdoor fitness area with exercise stations and a half-mile trail running through the park. According to city information, there will be a picnic area and water fountains.

An existing house at the park will be renovated into a nature center with classrooms, restrooms, and an office. There will be one acre of native vegetation, a butterfly garden with an interpretive kiosk, improved pathways, and a parking lot, according to city information.

In 2017, the city recognized an opportunity to expand the park when two adjacent parcels became available for sale. Coconut Creek purchased the two five-acre parcels adjacent to the park on the east and west sides in 2017 and 2018 and received a Florida Communities Trust grant to partially reimburse the city for these purchases, according to city information.

Coconut Creek was obligated to renovate an existing home into a nature center and to create new pathways, picnic areas, multi-use fields, outdoor exercise equipment, and a native planting area, according to city information.

Oak Trails Park is located in the northern part of the city at 4230 Northwest 74 Street.

May 21: Two subjects shoplifted merchandise valued at approximately $440 from Publix, 6570 N. State Road 7.

May 23: Property damage was reported at Tradewinds Park, 3601 W. Sample Road.

May 23: Property damage was reported at the Promenade, 4413 Lyons Road.

May 25: An 85-year-old Wynmoor resident reported losing $4,300 after sending checks to unknown subjects in a fraud scheme.

May 19: A vehicle crashed into a tree in the 200 block of South Lyons Road after a large rock reportedly became lodged on the gas pedal. The driver left the scene before officers arrived.

May 19: A traffic stop in the 2000 block of Lyons Road led to a warrant arrest.

May 22: A subject was arrested for loitering and prowling in the 3500 block of Lyons Road.

Rasheed Abdur Muwwakkil, 44, was arrested on a charge of third-degree felony petit theft as a subsequent offense on May 19.

Zachary Cesar Sjogreen, 28, was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on May 19.

Richard Karl Horn, 51, was arrested on a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon on May 20.

Tristan Malachi Azor, 20, was arrested on charges of possession of cannabis under 20 grams and possession of synthetic cannabis under 3 grams on May 20.

Angel Geovany Navas, 23, was arrested on a charge of resisting an officer without violence on May 22.

Byron Omar Quintanalopez, 32, was arrested on a charge of DUI on May 23.

Dajhan Jaeden Jones, 24, was arrested on two separate charges of battery on a law enforcement officer, firefighter, or EMT stemming from incidents on May 23 and May 24.

Jadia Nicole Smith, 21, was arrested on a charge of DUI on May 24.

Jelani Denord, 47, was arrested on a charge of domestic battery on May 24.

Ryan Jermaine Pope, 38, was arrested on charges of possession of cannabis under 20 grams and possession of synthetic cannabis under 3 grams on May 25.

Daniela Aguirre {BSO}

An Opa-locka woman accused in a recent prior Miami-Dade test drive theft case was found half-naked, covered in blood, and holding broken glass during an alleged Coconut Creek burglary spree, police said.

According to Coconut Creek court records, Daniela Aguirre, 23, was arrested around 3:52 a.m. on May 9 after officers responded to reports of a burglary in progress at an apartment complex in Coconut Creek.

Police said officers arrived to find Aguirre partially naked, covered in blood, and holding a shard of broken glass while yelling incoherently in a stairwell area. Officers reported she appeared highly agitated and initially refused commands to get on the ground.

Investigators said Aguirre repeatedly resisted officers while they attempted to handcuff her and attempted to grab police equipment. Officers said she even slipped off one handcuff during the struggle, forcing multiple officers to restrain her again before she was fully secured.

According to police, the incident began when Aguirre allegedly forced her way into a neighbor’s apartment after aggressively banging on the front door. When the resident opened the door, investigators said Aguirre shoved the victim backward, entered the residence without permission, and battered the victim inside the home before being pushed back out.

Police said Aguirre then went to a second nearby residence, where she allegedly removed a screen from a kitchen window and attempted to climb inside while yelling, “Let me in, let me in.” Investigators said the resident slammed the window shut, but Aguirre punched through the glass, shattering it and suffering cuts to her arm.

Further investigation revealed that Aguirre had allegedly arrived at the apartment complex driving a truck reported stolen out of Orange County, according to police. Officers said the truck was found still running in the middle of the street with the driver’s door open and no license plate attached. 

Aguirre was transported to Northwest Medical Center for treatment of self-inflicted injuries before being booked into the Broward Main Jail, according to the report.

The Coconut Creek arrest comes just weeks after Aguirre was arrested in Miami-Dade County in April in a separate alleged vehicle theft case involving a dealership test drive.

According to Miami-Dade authorities, Aguirre was arrested after deputies said she stole a 2021 Ram truck during a test drive at Metro Ford Miami while arriving at the dealership in a separate stolen vehicle. Investigators said Aguirre told a salesman she wanted to show the truck to her father before allegedly driving off. She was charged with two counts of grand theft auto in that case.

Coconut Creek has a new Director of Parks and Recreation.

Janet Hull, who has worked for the department for 13 years, is now the leader, having most recently served as superintendent.

During a recent commission meeting, City Manager Sheila Rose announced Hull as the new director and praised her accomplishments.

Responding to the announcement, Hull said, “This city is an amazing place to work, and the people here are wonderful. I am honored to have this position.”

Looking ahead, Hull said an important goal is to bring the staff together more. She plans to reassess the athletic program and hopes to keep more of the youth athletic leagues in-house.

A certified parks and recreation professional through the National Recreation and Park Association, Hull holds a Master of Science in Exercise Science from the University of Pittsburgh. She has dedicated her career to enhancing community wellness, recreation programs, and public spaces and has more than 30 years of experience in the field, according to Hull.

As the Director of Parks and Recreation, Hull supervises the planning and delivery of community recreation services, maintenance of public parks, and coordination of fitness and athletic programming. Her leadership also supports the department’s contribution to the city’s mission of being a “green city” by emphasizing sustainable development, waste reduction, and equitable access to outdoor spaces, according to Hull.

A man was arrested after police said he threw cookies and bottled drinks during a drunken disturbance inside a Coconut Creek Subway.

According to a Coconut Creek Police Department report, on May 18, officers responded to a 911 call from the Subway at 5415 Lyons Road after employees reported that a disorderly customer was causing damage inside the restaurant and refusing to leave. 

Upon arrival, officers located Ronel Myrtil, 37, of Oakland Park, kneeling on the floor with his hands raised, begging officers to arrest him.

After detaining him, officers spoke to witnesses who said Mytril entered the restaurant and asked an employee where “Debra” was. When told she was not working, investigators said Myrtil became upset, knocked an entire tray of cookies onto the floor, and walked out of the store.

The employee told police Myrtil allegedly threatened him while leaving, saying, “When you see Debra, tell her I’m coming for her neck.”

Police said Myrtil later returned to the restaurant, opened a cooler, and began taking bottles of drinks and smashing them onto the floor, causing them to burst and spill throughout the store. 

Officers said he then climbed onto a restaurant table and refused to leave, yelling at employees and customers. 

Investigators said they smelled alcohol on Myrtil’s breath and discovered a can of Heineken beer and an open case of beer inside his red Tesla parked outside the Subway.

Myrtil was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. He later posted a $300 bond.

MSAA Championship. {MSAA}

Lyons Creek Middle School track and field team competed in Fort Lauderdale at the MSAA Championship.

The girls’ team finished second in the 4×200-meter relay with La’Nya Smith, Madison McKenley, Adaijah Etienne, and Laila Abdullah. They also placed fourth in the 4×100-meter relay.

Abdullah added a fifth-place finish in the 200 meters, while Geneiss Amos finished sixth in the discus and Adrianna Moss placed ninth in the 400 meters. Sophie Arredondo, Smith, and Morgan Moss also contributed to the girls’ team’s eighth-place finish overall.

The boys’ team was led by its 4×200-meter relay squad, which placed seventh with Jason Brown, Patrick Lowe, Tristan Miller, and Jaleel Daniels.

Tradewinds Elementary celebrates 30-year anniversary. {David Volz}

Michelle Rutledge has worked as a cook in the cafeteria at Tradewinds Elementary School for 30 years.

On May 22, as Tradewinds marked its 30th anniversary, Rutledge received an award of recognition for her years of service, highlighting her dedication to the school.

“I love the kids at this school, and I really like it when they come back to see me. I have no plans to retire,” said Rutledge.

The Tradewinds community came together to celebrate 30 years of education in the area. Former principals and teachers, most of the Coconut Creek commission, Broward County School Board members Nora Rupert and Debra Hixon, and school district administrators joined the festivities throughout the morning, creating a sense of shared history.

Educators with long careers at Tradewinds appreciated the opportunity to share memories during the anniversary event. Among them was Stephanie Velandia, a second-grade teacher with 29 years at the school, who enjoyed reuniting with current and former colleagues.

“We are a family at Tradewinds, and both my daughters went to school here. I love teaching here, and we all care for each other,” said Velandia.

Dr. Priscille Elie, the principal of Tradewinds, said she enjoyed the celebration and the opportunity to see so many leaders and community members. “I know we can count on our community leaders to support us, and it was good to see so many former staff coming back,” she said.

Elie believes it is important to put students first and build relationships with the children’s families at the school. “Our focus is on the student and the growth of the whole child. My heart is in care for the children at Tradewinds,” she said.

Former principals also attended, spending the afternoon catching up with colleagues. Michael Breslaw, principal for over 12 years, shared that his two daughters attended Tradewinds before going on to the University of Florida. He is currently the principal at Bayview Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale.

“It is really great to be here and visit with some of the great people I worked with,” said Breslaw.

Former principal Susan Whiting, who led the school for 11 years, said she enjoyed the event and was glad to see educators she had worked with over the years.

Coconut Creek Police say four officers were needed to subdue a man calling himself “God’s Warrior” after he was allegedly caught smoking crack outside a Publix.

According to a Coconut Creek Police Department arrest report, officers responded around 9:35 a.m. on May 16 to the Publix at 4849 Coconut Creek Parkway after a manager reported a man – later identified as Roger Wilson, 36, smoking from a glass pipe outside the store.

When officers approached Wilson, police say he continued smoking from the pipe and told officers his name was “God’s Warrior.” Investigators later noted Wilson has a “GODS WARRIOR” tattoo across his chest.

Police said Wilson claimed the pipe contained CBD, but officers suspected it was crack use based on the type of glass pipe being used. When officers attempted to detain him, Wilson allegedly resisted, pulled away, grabbed at an officer’s neck and vest, and continued fighting even after being tased. Authorities said it ultimately took four officers to pin him down.

Investigators said officers recovered three burnt glass pipes from a search of Wilson, which later tested positive for cocaine.

Wilson was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.

Moderated by Dr. Jonathan Fields of Integrative Medicine US, the event featured panelists and representatives from organizations including University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Broward Health, Baptist Health, and Memorial Healthcare System.

Attendees received information and strategies related to preventive care, mental health, emotional wellness, movement and mobility, lifestyle medicine, and building healthier workplace cultures.

The City of Coconut Creek will host its annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 25, at Veterans Park to honor the men and women who gave their lives while serving in the U.S. military.

The free public ceremony begins at 9 a.m. at Veterans Park, located at 3550 Lyons Road. City commissioners, dignitaries, guest speakers, and the Coconut Creek Police Department Honor Guard are expected to participate in the event.

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will move to the Recreation Complex at 4455 Sol Press Blvd.

Steven Strong has a passion for learning and helping others.

The valedictorian of Monarch High School, Strong, has a 5.55 grade point average. He is preparing to attend the University of Florida this fall, where he will study pre-medicine.

“My favorite subject is chemistry, and I also enjoy math and English. My goal is to help people, and I want to be successful in education,” said Strong.

He was president of the National Honor Society (NHS) and vice president of the Math Club. Strong also played point guard on the Monarch basketball team. He earned the Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) diploma and qualified for the Bright Futures Scholarship, which provides him with a full scholarship to the University of Florida.

“As a leader in the NHS and Math Club, I spent time doing community service, including tutoring students,” he said.

Similarly, Lionel Valentin is the salutatorian at Monarch, with a 5.5 GPA, and is looking forward to attending the University of Florida this fall. He earned the AICE diploma and a full scholarship.

Valentin said he wants to study finance and pre-law, with the goal of becoming a lawyer. He also enjoys learning about psychology and literature.

As a vice president of the Student Government Association (SGA), he led the Dance Marathon, which brought students together for a night of fun and fellowship and raised about $15,000 for Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. He was president of the Inter-Club Council and led Monarch’s first homecoming parade.

“I enjoyed organizing the parade, and I especially loved the dance marathon,” said Valentin.

Brielle Finch was president of the SGA and earned a 5.0 GPA. She is looking forward to attending Florida State University in the fall.  She worked to promote student activities, including homecoming, the dance marathon, and other events that brought students together. She earned the AICE diploma and a full scholarship.

Finch explained that she always tried to have a smile on her face and promoted activities through social media. She was in competitive cheerleading for ten years, which helped her become a leader in SGA. She said she wants to study communications and sports marketing this fall.

Hillary Richard also made her mark at Monarch, serving as SGA administrator, recording all data and information for the organization, and as Inter-Club Council secretary. She was also a leader for pep rallies and school spirit events.

Richard earned a 4.9 GPA and an AICE diploma. She will attend the University of Miami this fall.

Jonathan Perez, 31, was arrested May 15 for resisting an officer without violence near 1100 Lyons Road.

Robert Pearson, 40, was arrested May 16 on a dating violence battery charge in the 2100 block of Lucaya Bend.

Kalvin Wright, 38, was arrested May 16 for resisting an officer without violence in the 4700 block of West Atlantic Boulevard.

Tyrike Whitely, 24, was arrested May 17 for habitual driving with a suspended license near Cocoplum Circle.

Patricia Phillips, 61, was arrested May 17 for violating a domestic violence injunction in the 6400 block of Northwest 37th Avenue.

Edmond Walters, 64, was arrested May 18 for DUI near 2200 Lyons Road.

Ronel Myrtil, 37, was arrested May 18 for criminal mischief at Subway, 5415 Lyons Road.

The Seminole Coconut Creek Education Foundation awarded $64,000 in scholarships to 80 Coconut Creek High School seniors during the Class of 2026 awards ceremony, in recognition of academic excellence and community service.

Held on May 13 inside the Coconut Creek High School auditorium, the event honored the hard work, academic excellence, and community involvement of the graduating Class of 2026. 

In total, 80 students were recognized for achieving among the school’s highest weighted grade point averages and for their community service.

Leading the way in community service was Negeberth Pierre, who completed an impressive 2,232 service hours. Enrique McKyle Muschett and Abianeta Louis also surpassed the 2,000-hour milestone to finish among the top service leaders in the graduating class.

On the academic side, Christaly Jean Baptiste, Daniel Therne, and Layla Wilcox earned recognition for posting the highest weighted grade point averages among the senior class.

The top-ranked students in each category received $2,500 scholarships, while second-place recipients earned $1,500. Students finishing between third and twentieth place received $1,000 awards, and those ranking from 21st through 40th earned $500 scholarships.

The Seminole Coconut Creek Education Foundation is a partnership between the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the City of Coconut Creek. The nonprofit organization supports educational opportunities for Coconut Creek students, local public schools, and children of city employees.

Foundation officials said scholarship presentations will also take place later this month at Atlantic Technical High School and Dave Thomas Education Center.

Seminole Police say a man accused of burglarizing vehicles at Seminole Coconut Creek Casino later tried selling a stolen Nintendo Switch back to the victim’s girlfriend through Facebook Marketplace in return for sex.

According to a Seminole Police Department booking report and probable cause affidavit, Bryan Kristopher Clark, 18, of Margate, was arrested on May 10 on charges stemming from a March burglary spree. 

Police said the investigation began after a casino employee reported that a Nintendo Switch 2 gaming console and several games were stolen from a vehicle parked inside the Seminole Coconut Creek Casino garage on March 1. 

According to the affidavit, surveillance footage allegedly showed Clark entering the victim’s vehicle and later checking door handles on multiple other cars throughout the parking garage in what investigators described as an attempt to locate unlocked vehicles. Detectives also noted the suspect was linked to another vehicle burglary involving a stolen firearm.

Investigators said surveillance video captured Clark’s vehicle and later identified him through the footage and additional evidence.

The case took another turn when the victim’s girlfriend allegedly found the stolen Nintendo Switch 2 listed for sale on Facebook Marketplace. According to police, she recognized the device because of a unique icon displayed on the console and the games shown in the listing photos.

Detectives said Clark allegedly communicated with the woman through Facebook Marketplace and offered to sell the console for about $500. The affidavit further alleges that Clark suggested he would lower the price in exchange for sexual favors.

Police said Clark also allegedly sent photographs of himself and his tattoos, which investigators said matched the suspect seen on surveillance footage.

According to the affidavit, detectives also reviewed a prior February arrest involving Clark for false imprisonment, domestic battery, and criminal mischief. An officer involved in that case allegedly identified Clark from still images pulled from the casino surveillance footage.

Clark was arrested by the Coral Springs Police Department at a home located near the 10000 block of Northwest 20th Street and transported to the Broward Main Jail, where he is held without bond.

Titus and Rylo {Broward County Animal Care}

Two dogs facing severe kennel stress at Broward County Animal Care are in urgent need of adoption or rescue placement before a May 28 deadline.

Rylo and Titus, both American Staffordshire Terrier mixes, have been identified as urgent cases because the shelter environment has negatively affected their mental and physical well-being, according to Broward County Animal Care.

Rylo, identified as A2474059, is a 4-year-old male weighing about 57 pounds. He is described as a “short and stout low-rider” with distinctive ears. Rylo arrived at the shelter on April 1 after he and a cat companion were abandoned at a local church and later confiscated by Animal Care.

Shelter staff said Rylo was initially terrified and withdrawn, often hiding in the back of his kennel. Over time, he became friendlier and more playful with staff, but officials said he has recently begun showing signs of stress again, including pacing, digging in his kennel, and avoiding walks.

“We want the best for Rylo and know he will thrive in a loving home outside of the high-stress shelter environment,” Animal Care officials said.

Titus, identified as A2473518, is a 6-year-old male weighing about 76 pounds. He arrived at the shelter in late March with another dog, Luna, who has since been adopted.

Although Titus can appear reactive in his kennel due to stress from surrounding barking dogs, staff described him as affectionate and well-mannered outside the kennel environment. Officials said Titus knows commands including sit, down, and paw, enjoys treats, and interacts well with other energetic dogs.

Animal Care officials said both dogs need to be placed with adopters or rescue organizations by Thursday, May 28.

Broward County Animal Care is located at 2400 SW 42nd St. in Fort Lauderdale and is open daily for pet adoptions from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The City of Coconut Creek invites residents and visitors to the “Hot Rods and Hot Dogs” Car Show, a family-friendly event featuring an array of activities for all ages.

The free event, scheduled for Saturday, June 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., will take place at the Community Center, located at 1100 Lyons Road.

The car show will showcase a display of hot rods and classic cars. Attendees can also look forward to a variety of food vendors offering delicious options to satisfy their cravings, as well as live music and entertainment throughout the event.

As a special treat, the first 250 children to visit the Coconut Creek Police Department tent will receive a free toy car. This giveaway adds an extra layer of excitement for the youngest visitors and ensures a memorable experience for families.

BCAA All-Star Flag Football Game. {BCAA}

Broward County Athletic Association all-star selections featured standout athletes from both Monarch High School and Coconut Creek High School, with 11 student-athletes earning spots in the spring showcase.

Monarch had several athletes selected following strong seasons across multiple sports. In softball, Mylie Carlson, Janiya McThay, and Savannah Curtis were all chosen after the Knights recorded six victories this season. Carlson led the team with a .500 batting average while adding a home run and six RBIs. McThay also homered during the season, while Curtis drove in 10 runs.

The flag football team featured selections Aaliyah Williams, Mylee Snyder, and Ira Joseph after the Knights earned victories over Deerfield Beach and Pembroke Pines Charter this year. Arthur Dias represented the boys’ volleyball program after Monarch won 11 matches, reached the District Final, and advanced to Regionals.

Coconut Creek, led this spring by its flag football program, captured a District Championship. Mylie Carlson starred at quarterback, throwing for 2,152 yards and 41 touchdowns while also rushing for 317 yards and another score. Ennis earned all-star honors after leading the team with 15 receiving touchdowns and 723 receiving yards, while Indiana Jordan was selected after hauling in three touchdown receptions. Herdy Clermont was the lone selection from the boys’ volleyball team following a five-win season for the Cougars.

Dallen Luis Morejon {BSO}

A Pompano teen was arrested after police said he used Snapchat’s location feature to track his ex-girlfriend, then chased and rammed the car she was riding in during a first date through multiple Broward cities.

According to a Coconut Creek Police Department police report, Dallen Luis Morejon, 18, was arrested on May 11 on two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. 

The report shows Morejon had been texting his ex-girlfriend through Snapchat throughout the evening, asking about her whereabouts. Investigators say he used Snapchat’s location-sharing feature to find her as she was riding as a passenger on a first date and at a birthday dinner with another man, near the 200 block of South Lyons Road.

The victims told police Morejon pulled his car alongside theirs, surprising the woman, who told her date who Morejon was and that they should avoid him. The driver attempted to flee, heading south into Pompano Beach before making a U-turn and driving back north. 

Morejon allegedly followed the vehicle toward the intersection of Lyons Road and West Atlantic Boulevard, and allegedly struck the rear of their car three times at roughly 45 mph. 

Both vehicles stopped at the intersection. The driver got out to confront Morejon, and a verbal argument turned physical when Morejon allegedly grabbed the man’s arm and punched him in the back of the head. The two grappled to the ground before the woman stepped in to break it up. 

Morejon then followed the couple again as they pulled into a Cumberland Farms gas station, where he finally drove off.

Officers located Morejon at his Pompano Beach home, where the damaged car was parked in the driveway. He also had visible abrasions consistent with the altercation.

Morejon was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. He was later released after posting a $21,000 bond.

A new destination for Greek frozen yogurt enthusiasts has opened in Coconut Creek.

Aleia Yogurt House specializes in Greek frozen yogurt and recently opened at 6111 Lyons Road. It offers a variety of flavors, including passion fruit, pistachio, caramel, peanut butter, and plain yogurt. There are a variety of toppings, including strawberries, blueberries, nuts, granola, and drizzles.

“This is a family business for us,” said owner Franny Mantilla.

They had been operating Belove Creamery at this location and changed their business from traditional ice cream to high-protein, low-sugar frozen yogurt and baked goods, according to Mantilla.

Business hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. It is closed on Mondays.

Leading seniors from Monarch {David Volz}

Brielle Finch has valued her role as a leader at Monarch High School.

She was the Student Government Association (SGA) president, a class senator, and a member of the National Honor Society.

Finch was among a group of Monarch High School seniors, along with seniors from Coconut Creek High School, who were honored during the May 14 commission meeting.

“As the SGA president at Monarch, I enjoyed leading the dance marathon, homecoming, pep rallies, blood drives, and other events,” she said.

In the fall, Finch will attend Florida State University and study communications and sports marketing.

Alyssa Jaikaran, a leader at Coconut Creek High School, said she has enjoyed serving as class secretary and is proud to have earned a Cambridge diploma. She also became a pharmacy technician. Jaikaran will attend FAMU this fall.

Enrique Muschett, another senior from Coconut Creek High, served as class vice president and earned a certificate as a medical assistant. He will attend FAMU this fall. Muschett reflected, “I have enjoyed my senior year, and I made a lot of friends,” he said.

Coconut Creek residents may soon see curbside recycling services.

During the May 14 meeting, the commission reached consensus on the frequency of the city’s curbside recycling pickups. The commission agreed that Republic Services would provide the service weekly.

“The commission gave consensus for weekly recycling for single-family homes for a maximum yearly assessment of $490. This would also include the twice-weekly garbage and weekly bulk and yard waste pickup,” said Mayor Jeffrey Wasserman.

Currently, Coconut Creek has twice-weekly garbage pickup and weekly bulk pickup for single-family homes, with a $326 fee. During the meeting, no cost was agreed upon if the current situation is not changed. Currently, residents can only recycle materials at a location behind the city police station or at Winston Park, according to Wasserman.

A final contract has not yet been approved. City staff and the commission will review the consensus agreement before it is presented again at a future meeting.

“The city commission wants to move in the direction of weekly recycling pickup. It understands the cost of this endeavor and is taking it very seriously as it impacts our residents’ bottom dollar,” said Wasserman.

North Broward Prep Baseball. {Matt Rothman}

The North Broward Prep baseball team made quite a run, but ultimately fell one run short in its quest for a fourth State Championship in the last six years.

The Eagles, who captured City, District, and Regional titles this season, put up an incredible fight in the State Championship game. Trailing late, they scored three runs in the seventh inning to keep their hopes alive, but ultimately fell by a run to South Walton High School after the game-winning run crossed in the bottom of the seventh inning. Gabriel Goupet led the offense with two RBIs, while Caden Coleman, Julian Rodriguez, and Marcus Hall all had RBIs.

NBP previously also delivered one of the most dominant pitching performances of the postseason in the State Semifinals, as Jack Rostock tossed a complete-game shutout on only 80 pitches. Smith, Rodriguez, Nico Dibella, and Goulet drove in runs as the Eagles finished the season with a record of 25-7.

Monarch High School’s Top WGPA Winners. {Seminole Coconut Creek Education Foundation}

The Seminole Coconut Creek Education Foundation awarded $64,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors at Monarch High School during a ceremony held on May 4.

According to the foundation, scholarships were presented to the top 40 students with the highest weighted grade point averages and the top 40 students with the most community service hours.

Students earning first place in each category received $2,500 scholarships, while second-place recipients earned $1,500. Students placing third through 20th received $1,000 each, and those finishing 21st through 40th received $500.

Steven Strong earned top honors for the highest weighted GPA with a 5.5313. Lionel Valentin finished second with a 5.4583 GPA, followed by Christina Phan with a 5.4048 GPA.

In the community service category, Madison Ferraro was recognized for completing 993 service hours, the highest among graduating seniors. Arianna Figueroa followed with 809 hours, while Elinor Shamai completed 632 hours.

The foundation is a partnership between the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the City of Coconut Creek. The public charity provides educational support and scholarship opportunities to Coconut Creek residents, students attending public schools in the city, and children of city employees.

Foundation officials said additional scholarship presentations will take place later this month at Coconut Creek High School, Atlantic Technical High School, and Dave Thomas Education Center.

The Coconut Creek Youth Theater Program will bring a classic Disney tale to life later this month with a live performance of 101 Dalmatians Kids, showcasing the talents of local young performers.

Scheduled for Saturday, May 16, at the Monarch High School Auditorium, doors open at noon, and admission is free for all ages. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The show promises a “paw-sitively delightful” experience, featuring a cast of youth actors who have been working to bring the beloved story of the spotted pups to the stage.

Incidents

Burglary and Theft

A residence burglary was reported in the Tallowwood mobile home community in the 6500 block of Northwest 32nd Avenue on May 5. A trespass warning was issued.

A theft from a motor vehicle was reported at Legacy Apartments, 4511 West Atlantic Boulevard, on May 6. The reported loss was $400.

Publix, 4849 Coconut Creek Parkway, reported a felony retail theft on May 6 involving approximately $30 in merchandise.

Kohl’s, 6950 North State Road 7, reported a delayed retail theft on May 6 involving approximately $899 in merchandise. The suspect fled the store.

A delayed residence burglary in Coral Pointe was reported May 7 in the 5400 block of Northwest 42nd Way. The estimated loss was $100,000.

A burglary with assault was reported May 9 in Baywood Village III.

Walmart, 5571 West Hillsboro Boulevard, reported an employee theft investigation involving approximately $90 in merchandise.

A vehicle theft was reported May 10 at Coconut Palm Club, 5320 Northwest 55th Boulevard. The vehicle owner tracked the vehicle to North Miami Beach, where police were expected to recover it.

Cocobay reported criminal mischief to its front gate on May 10.

A bicycle theft with an estimated loss of $700 was reported May 11 in Country Lakes Mobile Home Park.

Assaults and Domestic Incidents

A domestic violence injunction violation was reported May 5 in South Creek.

A physical confrontation stemming from a traffic crash was reported May 5 at 4400 Sol Press Boulevard. No arrests were made.

A fight between friends was reported May 6 near Northwest Eighth Street and Palmetto Drive. The victim declined prosecution.

An aggravated assault and battery involving an elderly victim was reported May 7 at Marathon.

A domestic disturbance involving false imprisonment led to an arrest May 8 in the San Mellina neighborhood.

An altercation involving an elderly victim was reported May 8 in a Walgreens parking lot on Coconut Creek Parkway.

An aggravated battery involving a vehicle used as a deadly weapon was reported May 10 near Lyons Road. Police said an ex-boyfriend tracked down his former girlfriend while she was with another man. An 18-year-old suspect was taken to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail.

A dating violence battery was reported May 11 at Vista Verda on West Atlantic Boulevard.

Drug and DUI Arrests

A traffic stop at 2200 Lyons Road on May 5 resulted in four arrests, including felony fentanyl and oxycodone possession charges.

A traffic stop near Lyons Road and Winston Park Boulevard on May 5 resulted in the discovery of 26.4 grams of marijuana.

A traffic stop on Johnson Road on May 7 resulted in a methamphetamine possession arrest.

A DUI arrest was made May 10 on West Hillsboro Boulevard.

Other Notable Incidents

Police assisted the Broward Sheriff’s Office on May 5 in apprehending burglary suspects near Northwest 48th Avenue and Northwest 74th Place in Pompano Beach.

A suspicious incident involving possible narcotics activity and stolen motorcycles was reported May 7 in Country Lakes.

A seventh-grade student at Lyons Creek Middle School was investigated after making an inappropriate comment.

An unattended natural death was reported May 10 in South Creek.

Two separate fire incidents were reported May 10, including an indoor fire on Acacia Circle and a fence fire caused by discarded coals in South Creek.

Arrests

Tyler Ryan Pierrephilippe, 21, was arrested May 5 on a felony charge of possession of oxycodone following a traffic stop on Lyons Road.

Morris Lee Johnson, 22, was arrested May 5 on a felony fentanyl possession charge.

Jerry Michael Adams, 56, was arrested May 5 on a felony marijuana possession charge involving more than 20 grams.

Alan M. Caldwell, 35, was arrested May 6 on felony charges of fleeing and eluding law enforcement and grand theft.

Evan Michel Natland, 31, was arrested May 7 on a felony methamphetamine possession charge.

Volodymyr Maliarov, 38, was arrested May 8 on a felony false imprisonment charge.

Daniela Aguirre, 23, was arrested May 9 on felony charges of resisting an officer with violence, grand theft auto and burglary with assault or battery.

Patrick Joseph Lane, 28, was arrested May 10 on misdemeanor charges of DUI and dating violence battery.

Dallen Luis Morejon, 18, was arrested May 11 on a felony aggravated battery with a deadly weapon dating violence charge.

A couple has officially taken over ownership of Allbrite Pool Supplies and says they are proud to continue the longtime business’s legacy of serving the community.

Edward and Giselle Paula of Paula Pools LLC recently acquired the family-owned pool supply and service company located at 8036 Wiles Road, taking over a business that has been owned and operated by the Eagan family for two generations.

For the Paulas, the acquisition is both professional and deeply personal.

Giselle grew up in Coral Springs and lived across the street from Allbrite from the age of five. After graduating from Coral Springs High School, she and Edward returned to Coral Springs more than nine years ago to raise their family and further establish roots in the community they love.

The couple said they immediately recognized the strong reputation and trust the Eagan family had built over nearly four decades in business.

“We immediately saw the impact the Eagan family had on the community through Allbrite,” the Paulas said. “It’s an honor to continue that legacy while helping the business grow for future generations.”

Both Edward and Giselle come from family business backgrounds and bring experience in distribution, warehousing, logistics, operations, and customer service — skills they believe position them well to continue the level of care and reliability Allbrite customers have come to expect.

For customers, the transition is expected to feel seamless.

The Paulas say their priority is maintaining the personal relationships, dependable service, and strong communication that have long defined Allbrite, while gradually expanding route services to meet growing demand in the area.

All current staff members will remain with the company, except for Tracy, who is retiring after many years of dedicated service. Gary Eagan Sr. will also remain involved during the transition period to help ensure continuity for employees and customers alike.

“No major changes are planned,” the Paulas said. “The Eagan family built this business on reliability, honesty, and customer service, and we fully intend to continue those values moving forward.”

Allbrite currently serves Coral Springs, Parkland, and surrounding communities, with plans to gradually expand as the company continues to grow and add team members.

Coconut Creek Community Center {Coconut Creek}

The City of Coconut Creek will host a Senior Health & Wellness 2026 Broward County Tour event on Monday, May 18, offering residents an afternoon focused on healthy living and education.

The event, led by Commissioner Sandy Welch, will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Community Center, 1100 Lyons Road. It is free and open to all ages.

Attendees can participate in a variety of activities, including a healthy cooking demonstration and a session on “Smart & Savvy Nutrition on a Budget,” designed to help individuals make healthier food choices without overspending.

City officials encourage residents to preregister, as space is limited and registration will close once capacity is reached. To reserve a spot, participants can call the Community Center at 954-545-6670.

North Lauderdale BSO. {Aiden Palmer}

Four people were arrested after a shooting in North Lauderdale left one person dead and another injured, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

According to BSO, deputies responded around 1 a.m. to reports of a shooting near the 7900 block of Southwest Seventh Court. When deputies arrived, they found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

North Lauderdale Fire Rescue transported both victims to a local hospital, where one later died from their injuries. The victim was identified as Maurice Vorroto, 20, of Coconut Creek. The second victim survived.

Investigators identified a suspect vehicle connected to the shooting and issued a “be on the lookout” alert to surrounding law enforcement agencies, according to BSO. Deputies later located the vehicle near the 1300 block of Avocado Isle in Fort Lauderdale.

BSO said four people were arrested in connection with the case, including two juveniles, ages 15 and 16. The adult suspects were identified as Aamir Adams, 19, of Pompano Beach, and Anthony Adams, 18, of Fort Lauderdale.

Detectives with BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The postseason is in full swing for track and field, with three local teams delivering strong performances in the postseason.

Following a third-place finish at the Palm City Championships, North Broward Prep turned in an impressive showing at the District Championships, producing six individual titles and finishing third overall on the boys side.

Boston Nguyen led the way by winning the long jump, while Jayden Smith captured first in the high jump. Nguyen also added a runner-up finish in the triple jump, with Aya Ogunyebi (high jump) and Zachary Almelchenko (javelin) each placing second as well.

The girls’ team matched that success with a fourth-place finish. Stellala Goldberg had a standout meet, winning both the 400- and 800-meter races. Ysa Pimentel claimed the high jump title, while Ella Munoz won the triple jump. The 4×400 relay team of Munoz, Avav Austad, Noelle Barthelette, and Goldberg also took first place. Munoz (long jump) and Barthelette (400 meters) added second-place finishes.

At Regionals, Nguyen once again led the boys team, placing second in the long jump and third in the triple jump. Smith and Ogunyebi finished fourth and sixth in the high jump, while Thor Hwasta, Zachary Almelchenko, and Sammy Kovari all placed in the top seven in the javelin. Nassar added a seventh-place finish in the 3200 meters as the team placed fifth overall, with multiple athletes qualifying for the state meet.

At States, NBP had seven different student-athletes compete, highlighted by Munoz competing in four events. Her best result was a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, while Pimentel placed in the top 10 in the high jump. Smith finished fifth in the long jump to lead the boys team, while Nguyen came in eighth in the triple jump.

The girls’ team placed third overall at Regionals, highlighted by Goldberg’s regional title in the 800 meters. Munoz delivered a strong all-around performance, finishing second in the 400-meter hurdles and as part of the 4×400 relay team, while also placing third in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump. Barthelette and Austad also qualified for states and competed in multiple events.

Monarch High School also saw solid performances across both meets. Isaiah Worthy led the boys on the track, placing fifth in the 100 meters and sixth in the 200 meters. The 4×100 relay team of Bryan Bynes, Worthy, Sanjae Fisher, and Christopher Cortinas finished fifth and advanced to states, while Cortinas also placed eighth in the long jump. Rickenson Bozier added a sixth-place finish in the discus.

On the girls’ side, Chelsea Dumas placed sixth in the 200 meters and teamed with Kennedi Stephenson, Jania Cooper, and Aliyah Duncan to finish sixth in the 4×100 relay. Jasmine Jean-Marie contributed a fifth-place finish in the discus.

Coconut Creek High School’s Samuel Jean captured the District Title in the discus to lead the boys team, while Paul Inonme earned a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles to qualify for Regionals. The Cougars also advanced two relay teams, along with individual qualifiers Zanii Miller, Woldy Mathurin, and Braylon Alexis.

On the girls’ side, Ruthann Powell paced Coconut Creek by finishing fifth in the 100 meters at the District Championships, while Ja’niya Cohen also qualified for Regionals.

North Broward Prep Baseball Celebrates a Walk-Off Win. {Matt Rothman}

The postseason has been nothing short of thrilling for North Broward Preparatory School, as the Eagles captured multiple championships and delivered several dramatic walk-off victories during an unforgettable playoff run.

The success began with the Eagles winning the Palm City League Invitational Championship after edging Palmer Trinity School 1-0. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning when Zack Tavarez delivered a walk-off double to secure the title.  Jack Rostock dominated on the mound with six scoreless innings before Tavarez struck out the side in the seventh to earn the victory.

The momentum continued in District Tournament play when NBP defeated Clewiston High School 1-0 in another pitcher’s duel. Tavarez again starred by tossing six shutout innings. After the game remained scoreless through six, Caden Coleman escaped a bases-loaded jam in relief before leading off the bottom of the seventh inning with a triple. Anthony Diaz followed with a walk-off single to send the Eagles to the district championship game.

In the title game, North Broward Prep fell behind 2-0 early before rallying in the fourth inning on a two-run home run from Julian Rodriguez. The Eagles broke the game open in the sixth inning with four runs. Diaz drove in two, Rodriguez added another RBI, and another run scored on an error. Rostock turned in another dominant outing, pitching six innings with nine strikeouts before Diaz recorded the final three outs to clinch the district championship against Coral Springs Charter.

The Eagles carried that momentum into Regionals, where they once again faced Coral Springs Charter School. NBP trailed 4-0 before storming back to tie the game and eventually winning on a two-run walk-off home run from Alex Smith.

North Broward Prep then swept McKeel Academy before taking two of three games against Calvary Christian Academy in the Regional Finals. The Eagles won the opening game 8-6 and followed with an 8-5 victory after trailing by three runs entering the final inning.

Rostock dominated in Game 1 of the Regional Final, allowing just five hits in a complete-game shutout. Smith drove in all three runs with a home run before the Eagles narrowly dropped Game 2 by a score of 6-5.

The deciding game turned into another thriller as North Broward Prep held on for an 8-7 victory. Coleman earned the win while Diaz recorded a six-out save to send the Eagles to the State Semifinals.

Next, the Eagles are expected to be the No. 2 seed and could face Sumter High School in the state semifinals. South Walton High School and Miami Springs Senior High School also captured regional championships and are expected to compete on the opposite side of the bracket with a spot in the state championship on the line.

The free event will take place Saturday, May 16, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Sabal Pines Park, located at 5005 NW 39th Ave. Live music begins at 7 p.m.

Featured entertainment includes Jah Steve and the Counteract Crew, billed as South Florida’s No. 1 reggae band.

The Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber of Commerce will host a workplace wellness event and business expo later this month to improve employee well-being and business performance.

“Workplace Wellness: The ROI of Wellness” is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Coral Springs.

The morning program will bring together business leaders, healthcare professionals, wellness experts, and community organizations to discuss how workplace wellness initiatives can improve employee health, productivity, retention, and long-term business success.

Moderated by Dr. Jonathan Fields, the event will feature speakers and representatives from leading healthcare organizations, including University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Broward Health, Baptist Health South Florida, and Memorial Healthcare System.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to connect with wellness-focused businesses and providers during a Wellness Business Expo held alongside the event.

Darrious Lamar Davis {PBCS}

A Coconut Creek man is accused of using a GameStop employee-issued device to steal Magic: The Gathering cards from two Palm Beach County stores.

According to the Palm Springs Police Department, Darrious Lamar Davis, 35, is accused of stealing more than $3,500 worth of merchandise from two GameStop locations in a single afternoon.

The investigation began after a Palm Springs GameStop manager discovered several items missing during a routine inventory check. Police said nine Magic: The Gathering Avatar Play Booster Box sets had been taken from a locked display case on January 8.

Surveillance footage reviewed by officers allegedly shows Davis entering the store, unlocking the secured cabinet, removing the merchandise, and leaving without paying. Authorities estimated the value of the stolen items at just over $3,500.

Detectives later linked the incident to a similar theft reported earlier that same day at a GameStop on Okeechobee Boulevard in West Palm Beach. In that case, police say locked display cases were also accessed and high-value items removed.

Records show investigators believe both thefts occurred within about 30 minutes of each other and were carried out using the same method. In each instance, Davis allegedly used a magnetic unlocking device, a tool generally issued only to store employees, to open the secured cases.

On January 20, West Palm Beach police responded to the GameStop on Okeechobee Boulevard after Davis reportedly returned to the store. Officers took him into custody and said they recovered a magnetic unlocking device, a tan backpack, and a black dreadlock wig believed to have been used during the thefts.

Court records, following an investigation, show that the PSPD later issued a warrant and that Davis was taken into custody on April 28 and transported to the Palm Beach County Main Detention Center.

Coconut Creek Police responded to various calls from April 28 to May 4, 2026.  Below is a detailed account of the incidents handled by local law enforcement during this period.

Incidents

A student at Tradewinds Elementary, located at 5400 Johnson Road, was reported for bringing two alcoholic beverages to school on April 28.

A delayed retail theft was reported at Kohl’s, 6950 N. State Road 7, involving approximately $503 in stolen merchandise.

Coconut Creek High School officers assisted with two separate incidents on April 29, including the recovery of a missing juvenile from Tamarac and a Department of Children and Families investigation involving a student.

Sephora, located at 4455 Lyons Road, reported a delayed retail theft totaling approximately $393.

A vehicle was reported stolen from the used car lot at Al Hendrickson Toyota, 5201 W. Sample Road, sometime between March 26 and April 30.

Publix at Coconut Creek Plaza, 4849 Coconut Creek Parkway, reported someone attempted to use a counterfeit $100 bill on April 30.

A woman suffered injuries during an aggravated domestic battery incident in the Buttonwood Hammocks neighborhood on April 30. Police said felony charges were filed against a male suspect.

Officers arrested a driver for DUI following a two-vehicle crash near 4600 W. Copans Road shortly after midnight on May 1.

A disturbance involving a student on a school bus was reported at Monarch High School on May 1.

An electric motorcycle rider was accused of fleeing and eluding law enforcement near 4800 W. Copans Road on May 2.

A stolen vehicle reported at Casa Palma was later recovered by Hialeah Police Department.

Walmart at 5571 W. Hillsboro Boulevard reported a retail theft involving approximately $94 in merchandise on May 3.

Officers investigated a burglary at Coconut Palm Club reported between May 1 and May 3.

Another stolen vehicle was reported at Coconut Palm Club on May 4, along with an attempted vehicle theft where the vehicle’s computer system was disabled.

Publix at 4849 Coconut Creek Parkway reported approximately $500 worth of stolen meat products on May 4.

Arrests

Austin Ray Collier, 32, was arrested on a charge of battery on a person 65 years of age or older stemming from an April 30 incident at 1929 NW 49th Avenue.

Christine C. Uy, 43, was arrested on a charge of child abuse on April 30 at 3854 Lyons Road.

Unique Ayanna Quince, 26, was arrested on a DUI charge following a May 1 incident near 4600 W. Copans Road.

Francois Cineus, 52, was arrested on a second-offense DUI charge on May 3 near 4700 W. Sample Road.

Hayward Smith, 34, was arrested on a retail theft charge on May 3 at Walmart, 5571 W. Hillsboro Boulevard.

Tyqavious Wayquan Atkins, 30, was arrested on a charge of violating a domestic violence injunction on May 3 at 4849 Coconut Creek Parkway.

Coconut Creek Flag Football. {Coconut Creek Athletics}

The postseason continued in Coconut Creek, with teams competing in various sports, highlighted by the Coconut Creek Flag football team.

The Cougars were the lone team to qualify for Regionals after a District Championship and earned the three seed, defeating Southridge High School 34-0 in the Quarterfinals. However, their season ended with a 13-6 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Monarch High School went 2-14 and forfeited its game in the postseason after beating Deerfield Beach and Pembroke Pines Charter.

The Monarch High School boys volleyball team finished the regular season with an 11-10 record. The Knights entered the postseason on a strong note, having won five straight matches before dropping their final two against Suncoast and West Boca Raton Community High School. Seeded second in the District Tournament, Monarch received a bye in the opening round but fell in four sets, 19-25, 22-25, 26-24, 20-25. They qualified for Regionals and then lost in four sets against to West Boca Raton Community high school 19-15, 22-25, 26-24, 20-25.

Coconut Creek High School concluded the regular season with a 5-9 record, highlighted by two wins over Piper High School and additional victories against Hallandale, Boyd H. Anderson, and Blanche Ely High School. The Cougars also celebrated Senior Night, recognizing Darrell Carroll, Roubince Faustin, Garvens Metekkus, and Herdy Clermont. In the District Tournament, Coconut Creek took a set from Coral Springs High School before falling in four, 25-27, 18-25, 25-21, 25-20.

North Broward Prep featured Ryan Ash, Nico Pineda, Marcus Jacobs, Daniel Pereira, Matthew Norman, James Coll, and Abiel Socorro. While the Eagles did not record a win this season, they remained competitive, taking sets from Calvary Christian Academy, Highlands Christian, and American Heritage High School.

In beach volleyball, Monarch High School recorded two wins against Coral Springs High School and Highlands Christian. Their lone senior, Brooke Yunis, competed in the District Tournament, where the team entered as the sixth seed and dropped all five matches.

The North Broward Prep beach volleyball team recognized seniors Ellie Street, Chelsea Ventura, Kayla Tracy, Destiny Wiggins, Yasmin Dias Tonon, Dasia Johnson, Ava Swartman, and Skye Marino. The Eagles had a strong season, finishing 7-4 with wins over Sports Leadership and Management, Boca Raton Christian, Pompano Beach, Chaminade-Madonna, Highlands Christian, and Western High School.

In regional play, North Broward Prep was seeded fourth and delivered an impressive performance, winning all five matches against Pembroke Pines Charter and adding two wins over St. Brendan High School. Despite ultimately falling in the overall match, the Eagles capped off a successful season with a strong postseason showing.

The tennis team also competed and advanced to the Regional Semifinals. The boys’ team won 6-5- 1 during the regular season, highlighted by Jakob Stein at number one singles. The girls’ team won only two matches as a team, but has 21 victories combined in singles and doubles play this year.
